Alot of them are Messi supporter and by default roots for Argentina.

I doubt most of the stadiums are real Argentina citizen, more like people rooting for Argentina and comes with their replica jersey

I think the allocation for each nations are roughly similar?
 
No one who has any sense is going to say that Qatar is a beacon of democracy and human rights. But it's not whataboutism to say that many from the western countries who have invaded and bombed another countries are creating the biggest fuss.
Then someone is going to say that he/she was on the match in London. What did the British and Americans do? They elected the same guys back in.
They have held the Olympics in UK and now the next WC in USA. I never saw anything that said the Olympics should not be held in the UK because they illegally bombed and invaded Iraq. Neither is anyone saying anything about the WC being held in the USA next. The odd thing is it's not the people of the countries that have these deaths in Qatar it's complaining so much. It's the media and some people from the west.

The last point you've made also makes little sense to me. It's a straw man that doesn't seem to have any bearing on the discourse I've seen online. If you have a real example by all means quote it.

While we know that there are many local fans in Qatar who support Argentina (and likely others of Argentinian heritage travelling from Europe etc), there are still vast amounts who have traveled from South America

Pretournament ticket sales showed 60,000+ sold in Argentina and lots have turned up partway through also

It is an answer. 1) what is the criticism, if it were reservations about Qatar heat in July or not wanting to move it to December etc then obviously not.

2) If it’s about the apparent human rights issues and lack of LGBT laws then like I said and you consistently choose to ignore it depends on the factors I’ve already mentioned. And you’d also compare to how other countries with worse human rights records and similar lgbt laws were treated. Eg the WC in Russia, don’t recall Russia getting half the criticism or hate as Qatar. Yet it has similar lgbt laws, also didn’t Russia invade Crimea in 2014, and start a war with Georgia in 2010?

Let's not call it whataboutism, then. But it definitely is a bizarre argument when used on the Internet against people/posters who were 100% against the invasion and bombing of those countries.

I mean, do you believe that the average person who is "creating a fuss" about Qatar's disregard of women's rights, LGBTQ+ rights, worker's rights and so forth - are/were supportive of, say, the war in Iraq?

Actually, forget about the average person. Let's talk about this place. Do you think that many (or let's say a significant number of) posters on here who have "created a fuss" about Qatar were fine with what happened in Iraq?

I picture the meme where the guy is crying behind a mask of a smiling face for people from the western countries celebrating that it was a great World Cup final. They wanted this world cup to fail so badly yet it turned out to be one of the best in recent memory.

It can be a failure and entertaining at the same time, which is what I think it will be remembered as long term once the euphoria of the final wears off.

A very slim majority voted for Brexit and you can't claim all of them did it for racist reasons. Also this forum leans left so there's nowhere near a majority of British posters on here supporting Brexit.

Yeah although the 2005 European Cup win for Liverpool is viewed as one of the "Greatest" of all time (in terms of drama etc) I don't recall anyone bending over backwards to praise Istanbul for hosting it (probably because the hosts have no influence over the quality of the game).

Absolutely. Quite apart from anything else it will always be tainted by the way the host was decided. Also, if we're talking about failure, the Qataris failed to deliver upon what was originally promised. This world cup has been entertaining for sure but will always be remembered, for me, by the corruption that delivered it and what that confirmed about FIFA, leaving aside the human rights issues associated with it.

Most people here have no idea how big Argentina and Brazil are in the Indian subcontinent. I'm Indian and where I live, the WC is undoubtedly one of the biggest festivals of the land and the support for Argentina and Brazil rival that for the Indian Cricket team. The rivalry and the intensity is huge, really huge.

Yes. The most vocal people about Qatar are uncomfortable about Muslims having any sort of power. They’d probably rather their boss is a white male than a bearded Muslim.

You for real? Failure? Even english media who were blasting qatar are praising this to be one of the greatest WC ever and the greatest final ever. Controversies doesn't stop it from being remembered as a hugely popular WC.

We're not talking about the entertainment value of the football. We're talking about the totality of the event - the logic of having a WC in Qatar, in winter no less, thereby disrupting the league seasons because the host country fecked up and concluded they couldn't after all host a summer WC, the migrant issue, the LGBTQ issue, the police state nonsense of blocking people from wearing their clothing of choice at venues etc. When viewed in totality, these failures were tempered by entertaining and memorable football.

1. Yes I do, lived in a variety of countries (Pakistan, Nigeria, South Africa, Canada and currently Germany)
2. I hate their refusal to accept their hypocrisy, how they'll let shit that their pals do slide because they have economic ties with them and within the same breath try to morally police others.

I have no issue with what they do, any country in power has and will continue to do. It's their refusal to accept it and continue to act sanctimonious that annoys me. I fully support the issues they raise, but then I don't like the way they try to tell the world while ignoring what their friends do.

People can disagree with policies but would never go to the lengths they've gone to here to try and belittle this tournament, which is what I've said a lot of times.

There are journalists who have free voices, but if you are going to work for a large media outlet you are selling your soul to their agenda. Do you not believe that large media corporations have some form of an agenda? This have been proven by studies in the past 3 decades.

Didn’t Celtic get fined because it’s fans were waving the Palestinian flag? So let’s be honest, the LGBT logo is more about the political statement and not the clothing. It happens to be a political statement the Qatari don’t want being advertised. Instead of fining people they simply asked them to remove it or denied them access to the stadium.

Wearing their clothing of choice ? Isn’t in parts of Europe where the face veil and a specific type of swimming outfit is banned?

In Qatar no outfit is banned. There is a minimum decency level. Just like in the U.K. you’d get arrested for walking around naked, Qatar also has a threshold. If you look at most of the female fans they are dressed just like they’d normally be dressed in the West. Jeans, t-shirt etc.
