Rashford is going ahead with surgery and could be out until October

Thank God,

The most sensible decision, i can only imagine how disruptive a damaged shoulder is for an athlete who is constantly running at pace.

This also probably marks the end of any departure for Martial this summer as we will definitely need options on that left hand side.

I think we'd be mad to off load Martial when his stock is so low in a depressed market.

The chances of him having such a bad season in front of goal again are slim imo and you'd have to think prices next Summer will be higher.

Disappointing decision from Rashford. Going to the Euros for that contribution was an absolute waste of time.

Hopefully Greenwood, Sancho and Martial go gangbusters to start the season and Rashford can't get back in the team.
What an absolutely disgraceful comment. You call yourself a United fan but can’t support one of our own?
Marcus’ decision to join up with England just to stay involved was understandable. He may never have been picked to play for his country again had he missed this tournament, already being down the pecking order for Southgate. He was unlikely to know how he would be utilised by the manager.
As for him not playing when he’s back to fitness, just look at his stats and his goal contributions, consider if the team is better off without that (More goals and assists than Mason and Anthony combined last year, playing with multiple injuries)
Good luck and Get well soon Marcus, this is the right decision at the right time.

No problem. We need a fully fit Rashford, an injured Rashford isn't that great. Martial, Sancho, Elanga and James can cover.
Realistically it'll be Sancho/Martial/Cavani/Greenwood rotating the front 3 positions, with Pogba on the left occasionally too. Doubt Elanga or James will get too many games if the others are fit.

I've never understood the stick Marcus gets tbf. His output is amongst the best in the World for his position and you could argue he hasn't even been at 100% for a while. It's like he's only ever given shit because he's not Neymar. Not every player has to have that sort of style to be effective.

Very good news! If he can continue on his trajectory from late 2019 we'll benefit heavily. Good luck to him.

It is incredibly disruptive when you're just a normal person. At least mine was and I didn't need surgery.

Now what about his foot?

Can't really begrudge him going to the Euros, but it has been clear this needed done for months. He's been half the player.

Hope to see him back to his flying best soon!

I don't really see how any United supporters can begrudge his decision. The club clearly asked him to play through the pain and he did it for us, we can't exactly be mad that he decided to do the same for England.

It's easy to look back and say the Euros was a waste for him but I just can't imagine Southgate would've told Rashford he had no plans of playing him. And even if he did, it's still Rashford's right to want to be there. He's earned it.

I just hope he comes back fresh because it's been obvious for a while, despite his output, that he's been playing through injury.

It's terrible timing, but it's the right decision to have the operation as he can't keep on playing with such an ongoing injury.

Personally, I'm bloody annoyed with England (not Marcus) for picking him and yet rarely using him - presumably because they had better options than a non-100% Rashford. Obviously a fully fit Rashford would have been a cert for the squad, and would have played a lot more. But if his injury meant he was only going as a bit part player then he really shouldn't have been selected and the operation prioritised to get him fully fit sooner.

I appreciate not picking Rashford, given the justifiably positive PR around him during the last 18 months, would have been a bigger call than not taking some others. But as it was solely for injury reasons, not ability, then it should have been the right, and braver, call to make by England.

Generally this. But then occasionally this as well...

Rashford, Martial and Pogba get this type of comment quite often... 'I'm not happy with this or that so I want him to fail'...

I don't even know what that is to be honest?!

I don't want him to fail. I want others to succeed. I want players at United to have to fight like hell to get in the team and worry that if they miss game time that they won't get back in the side.

Rashford made the decision to play the Euros and miss 2 months of United's season. The consequence of that at a club like United needs to be that somebody else takes your place in the team.

What an absolutely disgraceful comment. You call yourself a United fan but can’t support one of our own?

Oh dear.

My comment was that when someone misses 2 months that others play well enough to keep them out of the side when they are back.

That's supporting the team, not one member of it.

This has mollified me and I'm not even going to fact check it because I need it to be true. Please, I believe you, I need to believe you, don't post a link with the facts.

Good on him and on the club for looking after the player.

Also, this is but a small reason in a sea of monster reasons why United fans (most, me at the top) are unimpressed with the England NT. A player that is unfit and needs serious work done; do you let him do what is the best for him? or do you get greedy and call him even though you don't intend to play him? How far along would Rashford have been now were it not for the "coming home" cretins in the FA starting with Southgate.

United needs to get back to the SAF days and fight this NT cretins that call unfit players. Especially England.

He can’t get much worse I guess
I know you got some flack for this post and I am not a huge Rashford fan but this is ridiculous.

He was in sizzling form before getting injured and he carried us at the sart of the 19/20 season.

I genuinely believe if he gets healthy, we'll see the same progression here as we've seen in Shaw. We know he's got it and he will start delivering on a constant basis.

Coupled with the strong bench and competition that seems to be great for attackers (except for Martial), I think Rashford will be awesome once he's back.

SAF would have had a word with Southgate and made it abundantly clear that he wasn't to go unless needed.

Good decision, glad it's finally confirmed. We'll be fine. Sancho can play both sides, Martial is hopefully fully fit, plus Elanga looking impressive in pre-season, Diallo will hopefully get a look-in too. The attack is going to be mad when everyone is fit.

Wish him a speedy recovery. Wish he had made that decision earlier but can't fault him for wanting to go to the Euros.

Marcus has been overused since Ole became manager, a few months recovering from surgery will benefit more than just his shoulder.

Will be like a new signing when he comes back 100% fit.

Rest-up Marcus!

Never been so happy to see a player for us out. When he comes back, fully recovers, it will be like a new signing. I think the timing is good too. Im glad he managed to get a holiday in before the surgery. Looking forward to him coming back and reverting to his explosive self.

It's 100% the right move, the overall rest will do him a lot of good on top of the shoulder surgery, as the shoulder issues will have effected his back problem as well.

Not to toot my own horn but he basically confirms all of this in his post on Instagram. He played through the pain with us and was going to do it for England too and seemingly was unaware Southgate had no plan of using him at all.

The problem.with this Rashford injury is more to do with decisions not being made or being delayed. Marcus was NOT at full potential in the second half of the season, was nothing but a bit part player for England in the Euro's and will now miss a chunk of the new season and why because nobody had the balls to stand up and say "Have the surgery NOW, or you don't go to the Euros". Players need to put their health and welfare first.

Does that mean useless Lingard will stay?
Lingard isn't useless but I doubt this affects him staying. What will affect it is a team putting in a proper bid. There is enough cover without him. Just means James stays and so too Amad and Elanga.

It's really strange but I'm also happy that he will be out for a few months. Not because I don't like him, I'm probably one of his biggest fans. But because he really needs this rest, physically and mentally as well. I'm not sure I could have taken more of his half-injured performances where everyone and his dog could see that he isn't fully fit. Not to speak of the over the top criticism and abuse he would have continued to receive.

So I'm happy for him to get the chance to rest, recover and then work hard to come back mentally and physically fresh. I'm sure he will do everything to reach his best form again as soon as possible. He will come back at a good time as well.

Enjoy your rest Marcus and get well soon.

I feel for him because he obviously regrets his decision to go to the Euros rather than get the operation at end of the season
