Pogue Mahone
The caf's Camus.
Watched this show on MUTV last night (had sky +'d it from a while ago)
It does exactly what it says on the tin. Every one of Ronaldo's 42 goals from last season, accompanied by ludicrous hyperbole from the MUTV commentator and the occasional, slightly confused, interjection from the legend that is Paddy McCrerand.
It really brought home to me what an amazing footballer the lad is. I couldn't help thinking what someone would think if they found that show on a DVD in a time capsule, 20 or 30 years from now. He scored literally every kind of goal. Tap-ins, fierce volleys, towering headers, long-range screamers, unbelievable free-kicks, you name it he scored it. He even scored with his cock. You also can see how he is two-footed, quick, strong, brave and incredibly athletic. And he scored 42 fecking goals, en route to winning us the domestic and European double.
Basically, if some future football fan opened that time capsule and they'd never seen Ronaldo play before, those 42 goals would absolutely blow their mind.
The shenanigans in the summer have tainted the way I feel about him and, in a way, taken the gloss of an amazing season for the club. This season's patchy form and petulance have made it even easier to focus on the negative and forget about his performances on the pitch last season. I don't think I'll ever hold Ronaldo in the same kind of esteem I have held other players at the club, both past and present. But, purely on a footballing level, I just wanted to remind everyone that one of the greatest footballing talents ever to walk this earth is currently playing for our club. And we should enjoy it while it lasts.
I can absolutely guarantee we will all be telling our grand-kids about "that boy Ronaldo" and how nobody in the modern game is a patch on how good he used to be (that's human nature after all) so I, for one, am gonna focus on enjoying the remainder of the career of "Ronaldo the footballer" while he still plays for MUFC, without getting my knickers in a knot about "Ronaldo the man". Sometimes in life you just need to kick back and appreciate what you have, before it's gone forever, I reckon this is one of those occasions.
Viva Ronaldo.
