To be fair Cantona was going up against some pretty good players at the time. You look at who Ronaldo is going up against and apart from Kaka and Drogba many of the so called top players are well out of form at this moment.Cantona was never the best player in the world. Ronaldo is at the moment.
Didn't Ronaldinho have a few OK seasons with PSG (didn't score that many, didn't have that many assists, but did some spectacular things that made him so coveted by the top clubs who saw his potential), then got to Barca and got recognized as the best player in the world, winning awards, after ONE great season there? For him to be recognized as the number one player in world football he has to keep this level up for at least 2-3 seasons
Very true. Cantona had a hell of a lot more to contend with in the 90s. As you say, there are few there to rival Ronaldo at the moment. For him to be recognized as the number one player in world football he has to keep this level up for at least 2-3 seasons

Yes. And that's the only great season he's had. (and was awful at the world cup too.)Didn't Ronaldinho have a few OK seasons with PSG (didn't score that many, didn't have that many assists, but did some spectacular things that made him so coveted by the top clubs who saw his potential), then got to Barca and got recognized as the best player in the world, winning awards, after ONE great season there?
Yes, but he never did it in Europe. In fact Fergie released this, after our defeat in the CL semi final to Dortmund, and decided to move on.For him to be recognized as the number one player in world football he has to keep this level up for at least 2-3 seasons

Ronaldo's game may have developed immeasurably since his arrival at United for £12.24m in 2003, but there remains an immaturity about him that is sometimes overlooked in the driving runs and jinking dribbles. He still plays like the most skilful kid in the playground, direct and greedy, and his anguished reactions to near misses tell a story. All those pained stares at the sky and fingers dragged down his face are the sign of a young man who knows the camera is on him and desperately wants everyone to see how much he cares.
The diving is now less of an issue, although it was raised again after the FA Cup defeat of Middlesbrough. It is still there, although you would have to admit he is very good at it compared to the ludicrous theatricals of, for example, Arjen Robben.
Cantona was never the best player in the world. Ronaldo is at the moment. Whether he'll achieve as much as Cantona at United is another matter.
The greediness part is called a team plan, he is our designated runner and carrier of the ball over long distances, the emotions are what human beings feel.It is obvious that the person that wrote this piece couldn't find a better criticism of the boy OR he is a deluded hack who thinks that footballers shouldn't show emotions or passion much like the brigade that criticised Gary Neville's celebrations against the scousers.immeasurably since his arrival at United for £12.24m in 2003, but there remains an immaturity about him that is sometimes overlooked in the driving runs and jinking dribbles. Maybe that's the case.Cristiano has everything to be better than any of the players who have played at Old Trafford.
It's up to him. Upto the coaching staff and upto the team to give him that stage to fulfill his talent and what his ability suggests he can accomplish...
I'm in total agreement with this says the chiefMaybe that's the case.
But there is no way he will be the most important or most influential player the club has ever had. He is brilliant no doubt but Cantona led the line more.
I have no doubt whatsoever when i say that Cantona is and always will be the greatest United player ever.
Even more so that players from the 60s team.
Which is clearly bollocks.Maybe that's the case.

Why, did Cantona have to achieve that to earn his status?Pretty good article, learnt a few new facts about Cristiano.
If he stays in this form for the next 5 years (with us) and gets us level on European cups with the dippers then I think we can start comparing him with the likes of Cantona.
until then it's a pretty stupid debate
Pele won 3 world cups .. 58 62 70People lets not get carried away. The talent is there for all of us to revel in but this kind of talk should only occur during the summer when we are all bored with no football being played.Lets face it, the boy hasn't won anything major yet.The only reason why Pele and Maradona are remembered is because they won world cups, in the case of Pele two and Maradona very nearly emulating that similar feat.Ronaldo is obviously at a very erly stage in his career and there are bound to be opportunities to win things BUT until he has actually won them he is going to be just another extraordinarily talented player that people might not be talking about in 30 odd years to come.
The one and only reason why he is the greatest in the world. You can't argue with that.Pele won 3 world cups .. 58 62 70
Yeah it's a little premature. I'm sure we would all love if Ronnie outshined Cantona but we'll have to wait a bit for that. I suppose one thing that can be said is that domestically Cantona was outstanding but wasn't the best in terms of the European stage. Ronnie has been so so in Europe, and had a cracking game against Roma. We'll have to wait another 2 seasons to see how consistent he is in EuropeEric Cantona and David Beckham were, in different ways, and at different times, the standard of excellence at Old Trafford - Cristiano Ronaldo looks set to outshine them both
One really good season and he is set to outshine Cantona.
tosser ... i can't even make sense of that comment and what the feck you are alluding to .. the dirge that comes from your keyboard is often incorrect highly opinionated bollocks often rounded off with a stupid fecking smiley icon or a cnutish sunglasses icon worthy of a 6 year old - you are so far up your own arse it's beyond a fecking joke .. when proved wrong for example by the likes of brad cantona or jasonrh you revert to immature ' i was only messing around ' ' don't take me so seriously ' bollox excuses - you are a prick of he highest order and i've just wasted my last post on you.The one and only reason why he is the greatest in the world. You can't argue with that.
Yes Brazilians who play at one of the top Italian or Spanish sides only need to have one good season before they are regarded the best, Sheva and Henry imo have been better and most consistent over a longer period didn't get the credit they deserved. That said in the last 2.5 seasons (not incl this one) he has been majestic for Barca to be fair.Didn't Ronaldinho have a few OK seasons with PSG (didn't score that many, didn't have that many assists, but did some spectacular things that made him so coveted by the top clubs who saw his potential), then got to Barca and got recognized as the best player in the world, winning awards, after ONE great season there?
I don't think the quality around the world is quite at the level it was say 5-10 years ago. This season in particular it is strange how few top players are on top form. The generation before are gone but with the newer one all the players haven't quite stepped up yet.Very true. Cantona had a hell of a lot more to contend with in the 90s. As you say, there are few there to rival Ronaldo at the moment.
Eto'o and Ronaldinho are having problems at Barca.
Henry has been injured for ages.
Zidane's gone.
To be fair your lot weren't that experience in Europe at that stage either. That said how well has Ronaldo or Rooney done in Europe? The likes of Beckham, Scholes, Giggs, Keane were all fantastic in that competition. Especially Beckham.Yes, but he never did it in Europe. In fact Fergie released this, after our defeat in the CL semi final to Dortmund, and decided to move on.
Kind of confirmed some rumours there, strong rumours we had a £6/7mill bid accepted and all of a sudden your lot came in with a much higher bid and hijacked the deal. Ahh well another one to the add to the list of could of joined....SAF on Ronaldo signing, clearing up an old myth that the players told him to sign up Ronaldo.
"We were on the case for Ronaldo for 15/16 years of age. We had a deal to sign him two years after we played that friendly but we had to move because Arsenal, Madrid were in for him so we made the move. You don't get performances like he made against us every week. It's good to get an opinion off of players and that friendly was different for what our players were saying".
