Roy Keane - at it again.

Did Keano actually say anything this week to stir up a fuss, or did F365 just write an article out of the blue and now everyone is getting on board for a kicking?

He's a grump fecker but he was a brilliant player and a United legend. Not really sure why he drums up the hatred he does, particularly among United fans. He's shipped a lot of stick over the last few years from saying things which were 100% true.

I think he was a good player, I wouldn't go so far as legend, although he was a world class captain and leader. The hate just comes from the way in which he departed on bad terms, and seems to criticise United at every opportunity.

I certainly don't hate him. I wish we had him in the dressing room.

As a manc in his mid 30's Keane certainly has legendary status amongst all my mates, suggesting he's not is just ridiculous.

You'll notice there's been far less criticism since Jose arrived and we've started to look like a club that actually knows what the feck its doing. Criticism during the Moyes/Van Gaal eras was totally warranted.

If he isn't a legend I don't know who is. 7 league titles, most of them as captain. 4 FA Cups, a European Cup in which he inspirationally dragged us across the line of a Semi Final against Juventus we were 2 goals down in. 5 times PFA Team of the Year, PFA Team of the Century. One of the best captains the club has ever seen. The man bled United from the minute he stepped in the door of the club.

He's obviously someone who has very high standards about things and calls clubs out when they don't meet them. Lets be honest, since Fergie left he's had ample ammunition to do that.

He is 100% a Utd legend though. He anchored the midfield for however many years and was the driving force in numerous games, especially when the chips were down. My favourite goal of his was early on in his career, Manchester derby at Maine Road, we were 2-0 down (I think Quinn scored twice) and he scored the winner from a Giggs (I think) cross with about 5-10 mins left after a lung bursting run into the box. That won me my first ever accumulator, £1 to £125!
 
Keano was a fantastic player, but without reading what he has done this time, he cuts the figure of a man who is not at peace with himself..

His psyche is part of what made him such a fantastic competitor and winner, but in everyday life his way can come across as strange to say the least.

32, I remember Keano at his pomp and he was great for us, but I just don't put him on the same pedestal as Best, Charlton, Law, Ronaldo, even Scholes. It's amazing how upset people get that opinions vary. Clearly he's seen by many fans as a legend, and in fact, is honoured on the Man United website as such under their legends section.

Come on mate. Keane was at United 12 years. He was part of two midfields that were both the best of their era (him and Paul Ince and him and Scholes). He was the general that led us to the treble, including that night in Turin. Keane is the absolute definition of a legend.

Anyone would think Keane won that game in Turin on his own. He was a great player but is way down the list of United legends.

The gulf in team perfomance between the 1997-1998 and 1998-1999 seasons was telling. Without their captain United looked lost especially in the second half of the 97-98 season. When Keane returned from injury for the 98-99 season (Sir Alex even called it the equivalent of a new signing), the team was absolutely rejuvenated. We only scored 7 more goals in the league in 98-99 than the year before (in case you or anyone wants to argue that the offense was much better). I followed those seasons closely (I even had a bloody diary where I kept match stats, ridiculous as it sounds). What made the difference was the leadership of Roy Keane and Jaap Stam. Keane in particular as the team rediscovered the fortitude they had lost when Cantona retired. Infact his drive was in large part responsible for us getting so many late wins that season and the seasons that followed. And we all know how, for a whole decade, we kept talking about the need to "replace" Keane. Honestly Keane might have been and still is a twaat, but to claim that he is way down the pecking order of United legends is absolutely ridiculous.

In no particular order but......Best, Charlton, Law, Cantona, Giggs, Ronaldo, Robson, Schmiechel, Scholes, some will say Rooney, and on the basis that legendary status isn't always just about talent or longevity, I'd say G Neville, Beckham and even Zlatan are ahead of Keane.

It's the whole package that constitutes a legend. I'm not saying Keane hasn't achieved legendary status, what I'm saying is he's some way down the list.

He's undone a lot of his great work here and he has zero passion for the club, to the extent that I think he's only ever really happy as a pundit if we get beat. That's no Manchester United legend sat in a TV studio ripping the club to bits. Pretty much every other player I mention is fan like in the way they speak about United, they have huge respect and their warmth for the club only enhances them as legendary. Keane has none.

Evra, Park and Solskjaer are three more, all less talented than Keane, but players that have endeared themselves to everything about United and continue to do so. Like the others I mention, all three left showing humility and respect and a gratefulness that they'd had the opportunity to play here.

Surely that should not be a big factor. Many ex players have been critical of Utd, including Scholes and Giggs but you still consider them legends right? In fact I would prefer if Utd legends were critical of Utd and not be like the nauseating ex-Liverpool players who can hardly fault Liverpool for anything. The run in during the 2013-14 season was unbearable.

Has Keane spouted shit about Utd and been overly critical and sounded bitter? Yes he has. But he poured his heart and soul and into this club to drive them forward, to make this club the best. He did not accept mediocrity and demanded the same from his team mates driving them hard to give their best. I feel what a player does for the club should be the biggest factor in deciding their legend status.

Serious question. Did you watch United as a supporter when Keane played?

I take your point and no one can dispute Keane's on field input for the majority of his time here but if you want a like for like footballer who drove his team mates on and lead by proper example then look no further than Bryan Robson. A better player than Keane, a better captain and someone who behaves with dignity and respect. An undoubted legend.

Keane's a loutish gobshite who, like Robson, happened to be a very good footballer. There's a difference though in the esteem these two are held - in my humble opinion.
 
Saying that Keane isn't a United legend is pretty much factually incorrect, in much the same way that saying Donald Trump isn't a figure of fun is factually incorrect. There may be indivudal people who disagree with the rest of the world's general assesment but those people aren't to be taken seriously really.

Zlatan being more of a Manchester United legend than Roy Keane is the opinion of a six year old.

Excellent post. The desire here to dissipate Keane's status and heroics is just plain weird. He was one of the preeminent midfielders of his generation and undoubtedly the best midfielder to play in the Premier League.

Anyone who actually did see Robson as United captain in the 80’ies would know that he (Robson) is by a country-mile the biggest and best captain we ever had at our club, in the modern game. On top of that, as the complete footballer he was, Robson is the best midfielder we ever had – That’s my opinion anyway.

Fair enough and I guess he will always polarize opinion because of his actions, much like Rooney.
 
Roy’s (lack of) relationship talent, will always bring him problems. His ”leadership skills” (mainly bullying) did suit us as one on the worlds best teams in the 90’ies, but I don´t see them of any use to him today. As e.g. coach, manager, an adviser, even acting as ”a TV has-been”, you need more communication and relationship skills than Roy has ever had to be good at it and successful.
