He more than earned his stripes in a United shirt, excellent player for us. Enough said.

Van der Sar's saved it... United again!
I stumbled across this (slightly older) interview and it brought a smile to my face:

You can literally feel how much love he still has for us and that he's never really got over United. Even when he talks about Malaga in the last part he brings us up. :D

Signed him as a coach for United on FM12

Would not mind that happening in real life. Would be a great influence on the young strikers we have.

I can't remember seeing a more clinical striker at the club (although van Persie is doing well)

Him leaving was one of the most depressing moments for me as a United fan. Really wish he'd been around for when we became good again after dragging us through our crap year. Legend! He'd have easily broken Sir Bobby's record if he were around some more seasons.

Probably what was needed though, he didn't fit your system as well as Saha and weren't there rumours of him not getting on too well with C.Ronaldo? You played probably some of your best football ever under Fergie in 06/07

Most ruthless goalgetter since Denis Law. He was absolutely lethal in the box.

He was a great goalscorer. The best natural scorer (bar big Ron) of his generation. When we became that fast paced counter attacking team, he had to go.

He's one of my all-time favourite United players. Was just as gutted him leaving as I was when Ronnie and Beckham did, incredible goalscorer and a legend.

Agreed. In the 02-03 season he was fecking immense- didn't he score in the last 10 straight games or something? Amazing he only won one league title with us, even though we were in transition.

He always exemplified the difference between the shit finisher and the deadly. Poor finishers try and shoot first time and feck it up or try and be composed and get caught before they get the shot off: Muller, Greaves, van Nistlerooij et al instinctively make the right call.

Anatomy of a shit striker:

20 chances: 10 need to be taken first time/10 need a touch.

10 get misjudged and the first timers should have taken a touch and the touches should have got shot.

6 make the right call but technique fecks up - weak/wide shot or poor first touch.

4 right call/right technique - keeper saves 2.

1 in 10.

I'll always remember that goal he scored away to Charlton. Rooney runs down the wing, chips it in and Ruud controls it with his chest, turns and volley's it into the top corner.

Apologies if my memory is way off

One of my favourite ever United payers, I was devastated when he left & for pennies too, he was worth much more than we got for him.

The sight of him at the League Cup final when he really wanted to get on & help but wasn't subbed was such a sad way to bringing his career at United to an end.

I'll always be fond of him, but let's not forget that leaving was his choice. He asked to leave, and more than once too.

Probably my favourite united player. He was just a brilliant striker, best I've seen at united.
