Spooky shit, brings back this memory - I was sitting in a Waffle House 20 years ago (December 2002) around 200A on the coast of Mississippi when a shot was fired from US 90 (the road on the coast) from a car. It was across from the old Treasure Bay Casino, just west of some clubs that were letting out. It struck the plate glass window next to the booth I was sitting (didn’t shatter the glass fully, but webbed it completely), passed no less than two feet from my head, then clattered into the staff area behind the open counter. Everyone hit the deck, cops were called, surreal next three minutes. They found the slug under one of them griddle ovens, no clue how it ended up there without striking one of the servers or line cooks (probably wouldn’t have hurt them too badly, but still). The police were absolutely certain it was a gang initiation rite - take a shot into a crowded public business & earn one’s stripes.

I always thought shit like that was an urban legend. It was in Gulfport to finalize my mother’s estate as she passed the week prior, then I hear & see a gunshot pass within inches of my dome, basically almost in the wrong place at the wrong time. Took me a bit of time to sit next to a window at a restaurant, etc. for a while after this.
All you needed to say was "I was sitting in a Waffle House" then you added "on the coast of Mississippi". Nothing good comes from the first part of that, then add Mississippi and it certainly can't be a good story.

What’s even spookier is when I was in the taxi ride home, we passed over a railroad track with the prerequisite rails on a hump. We stopped before it, crossed it, then about a minute later the taxi driver blurted out a string of expletives. It looked as though a train had gone through the intersection with signals going off, no railings coming down, nothing. We easily would have seen them if so. That freaked both of us out.

I was riding a streak of luck that week that I can only attribute to my mom. She was a blackjack dealer, the job she held when she passed. I turned about $2K into just over $10K in that week & survived two legitimate freaky instances which could have been disastrous. It felt like she guided me on the tables as well as outside of them.

Meh. If you don't practice you won't be any good with a pistol. So many little things can put a shot off target.
I found this out during M9 qual a few years ago. I didn't realize but the lady CATM noticed I tended to ever so slightly flinch before firing, likely my body anticipating the shot/sound. She had me breath and mentioned "it only takes five pounds of pressure to fire an M9" basically barely any pull necessary. I then hit 35 of 36 in the qual circle, with 33 in the smaller circle, and bang, expert marksmanship badge :) (also have expert on M4 which is my fav of the two).

So, movement is amongst many factors that end up missing intended targets. It's why SOFs say shoot, move, communicate. They rarely shoot on the move.

So what you are telling me is that the movies have lied to me?

Another one...

'Child among four dead' in shooting at office building in Orange, California

I have no clue about the racial or ethnic makeup of the victims or the shooter, but there’s a chance that common sense gun restrictions might have helped eliminate this tragedy.

Or we should just ensure that children can arm themselves.

Queue the inevitable ‘but California has strict gun control laws!!!’

It’s as if right wing gun fetishizers think that immigrant guns are stopped at the state’s border like shopping carts when they are tried to be removed from the parking lot.

Let's face it, as soon as they accepted school shooting as being part of 'the price of freedom' then the battle was lost!

All these pro-life (por-birth then feck off) pieces of shit members of Congress that'll do feck all to protect people.

Crazy. Wondering whether Covid and the economic stress that comes with the whole thing has lead to an increase in suicides.
Suicide by firearm is always ridiculously high. It's one of the fastest and most effective ways to kill yourself and therefore first choice among most people looking to exit their life.

Some of these sound horrific (unborn babies, etc)and don't think made national news, maybe because grouped under 'gang violence' and nobody cares?
It is weird how the FBI & some LE consider a mass casualty event due to gang violence different than the regular, run of the mill, American mass slaughter by gun.

Went to Home Depot a couple days ago to get some brackets for a shelf. A couple guys had a workplace dispute at the wood cutting area that resulted in one of the workers shouting at everybody about everything as he left after being told he was fired for his actions.

Yep. I left and got my brackets from Lowe’s. Seen that news story way too many times.

Savannah, GA, just a tad south of downtown & Forsyth Park. It’s a gentrified area full of SCAD students / yuppies on one side, still rough on the other. I probably hear gunshots two to three times a week at night, this was so close it sounded like I was listening to a gunfight with headphones on. Multiple people called the police as it was in an alley with a lot of bedrooms facing it.
Woah. This is ridiculous. But I think many Americans are so sensitized to it that they probably don't find it incredible?

Gotta love how fast Savannah changes from pedestrian paradise to “how the hell do I get out of here!?!?”

https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/31214902/report-former-nfl-player-phillip-adams-kills-5-himself

The gunman who killed five people, including a prominent doctor in South Carolina, was former NFL player Phillip Adams, who killed himself early Thursday, according to a source who was briefed on the investigation.

The source, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he wasn't authorized to speak publicly, said Adams' parents live near the doctor's home in Rock Hill, and that he had been treated by the doctor. The source said Adams killed himself after midnight with a .45-caliber weapon. He was 32.

The York County Sheriff's Office said they had searched for hours before finding the suspect in a nearby home.

Adams played in 78 NFL games over five seasons for six teams. A safety and special teams player from South Carolina State, he joined the 49ers in 2010 as a seventh-round draft pick.

Rarely a starter, Adams also played with New England, Seattle, Atlanta, Oakland and the New York Jets, finishing his career with the Falcons in 2015.

CTE??

If it is it will be yet another in a long list of items that has drastically limited my football watching. I am just having a hard time reconciling my enjoyment of a game that is quite literally destroying the brains of others.

Not saying we should ban football, just that I can't really enjoy it anymore.

As paradoxical as this sounds, I bet you'd have less brain and other injuries if Gridiron banned helmets and protective padding.
