I think he chose not to attack his old friend Joe Biden last year and prioritized that relationship over the needs of his donors and the people who desperately need healthcare.
So he cared about the party and the balance of power in the three branches of the US government. This criticism is fair but should recognize his motive being the need to get Trump out, something which I think Bernie might have struggled with had he won the nomination and Trump bestowed some tag like 'Bolshevik Bernie' on him.

when the most powerful person on the planet says something will happen, I expect it to happen and so does everyone else who doesn't spend their time posting in defense of democratic politicians who don't care whether they live or die.

guess im not as sophisticated as good old wi_red. not to worry, the midterms will be here soon and the voters will demonstrate what happens when you lie directly to their faces. then we can all go the current events section of redcafe and see you smugly wondering why poor people vote republican when it's against their self interest and everyone will be once again reminded why they fecking hate liberals.
If you are going to reference, and then attack, me at least tag me.

If by sophisticated you mean "paid attention in high school civics" then yes, I am sophisticated.

The same reason Trump couldn't spend a trillion dollars on a gold plated border wall is the same reason that Biden can't wave a pen and give you a check. That is not how government works. Biden said day one he would send a COVID relief package to the Senate to pass. On day one he sent a COVID relief package to the Senate. From that point all he can do is lean on the Senate to pass it.

folks, dwaynes, gawking euroscum, lend me your ears.

There are two versions of events being presented here.

Version 1: joe biden, a senator for 36 years, vice president for 8 years, and finally president elect, genuinely wanted to give Americans checks immediately. Thats why he said it and why democrats won in Georgia. HOWEVER, after democrats won Georgia and Joe Biden took office he was STUNNED to learn that the president cannot fulfill this promise because Joe Manchin wouldn't agree. (turns out that his vote is important which mr. Biden didn't know until January 20th because he "didn't pay attention in high school civics") So now Joe is earnestly trying to fulfill his promise only to be stymied by the gosh dang senate

Version 2: a politician lied to get votes

He's talking about the Obama incidents like he's suggesting there were more incidents under those 8 years. The ones he quotes were vastly more high profile as they happened in the age of mass use social media but he's not offering any metric on if/how things were different under Obama.

Then i'm not sure if he's critisizing Biden or the media but its on him if he interpreted that EO to mean "the end of private prisons". I doubt Biden meant it as anything other than exactly what it said on the order. "Performative"? That's a personal opinion based on crap (taking media headlines at face value).
Shaun is right. The headline is misleading. The order hardly dents the prison industry. It is largely "performative". It is good that Biden is sending a message here, but the war is far from over. The people have to keep pushing Biden.

Last news I heard was that they plan to put it within the budget reconciliation ? It is not over by far.
The list of items being pushed through budget reconciliation grows longer. I hope they don't screw it up.

If you cannot understand the fact that
the democrats nominated Biden
and Biden promised a lot of his policy is what Sanders also wants to be policy
and Sanders would get to push that policy as chair of the senate budget committee
and if Sanders continued to attack Biden, Trump would've won,

then I have nothing good to say. The nightmare of what happened with Hillary and the last 4 years probably still haunts him.

haven't seen the full context of this, but he also didnt criticise him forcefully during the primary itself. biden had a questionable record with plenty to go after, which bernie didn't bring up much, until he was well behind, and then only briefly. i know bernie's staff was very split over the approach he took. (i'm not sure if being aggresive would have made a difference, but he cllearly wasn't)

i also agree with eboue that he let down his donors. i saw stories from them, many of them are low-wage workers, and their propsects are grim without universal healthcare, and they threw away a few dozen dollars on the hail-mary of him becoming president.

Once Biden entered the race there was only going to be one winner. Not something that I'm happy about but that's the unfortunate reality. I think his approach was to not create any rifts within the party due to the common enemy/clear and present danger..

Imagine how grim their prospects would be during and after another four years of Trump.

Bernie's campaign advisor tried to get Bernie to contrast himself against Biden and attack Biden's legacy early in the primaries. Bernie refused to do so because he likes Biden according to David Sirota.

Bernie 6 months ago: We'll push him left.
Bernie today: We'll work within the framework of what Joe wants.

A lot of what Biden wants, Sanders wants. Sanders is now the chair of the Senate Budget Committee and can push through budget reconciliations which can pass with a simple majority. And the democrats now have a 51 - 50 simple majority.

Biden literally said he would veto healthcare as president due to cost. Plus he has said covid hasn't change his mind on healthcare.

It's nice that people have some optimism after the last 4 years but lets not go over board.

It would make no difference if COBRA is subsidised or whatever Biden is doing rn. They had one long shot and it's gone, and they can legitimately be angry at Bernie for not making the most of their very precious money. I'm talking about people paying thousands for prescriptions every year, people stuggling to hold jobs and so not being able to afford any meaningful insurance, and even people with jobs and insurance absolutely unable to pay the copays or deductibles. there are quantifiable human lives that will be lost because his policies aren't adopted, and some of those statistics gave him money ...

Saw this get posted on twitter recently.

Murray Bookchin in 1986 on Bernie Sanders' Burlington Vermont mayoral campaign
Indeed, for Sanders and his administration (the two are not necessarily identical), thirties socialism is notable for the fact that it rescues the marketplace from “anarchy,” not that it necessarily challenges the market system as such and its impact on the city. In Sanders’ version of socialism, there is a sharp “business” orientation toward Burlington as a well-managed corporate enterprise. Herein lies the greatest irony of all: all rhetoric aside, Bernard Sanders’ version of socialism is proving to be a subtle instrument for rationalizing the marketplace — not for controlling it, much less threatening it. His thirties-type radicalism, like Frankenstein’s “monster,” is rising up to challenge its own creator. In this respect, Sanders does not make history; more often than not, he is one of its victims.

ya, when he first emerged in 2016 polling at 3% and press coverage wasn't toxic, one of the angles he was covered with was his "pragmatism" as a socialist mayor. Reminds me of this. trigger warning for being an episode soon after the 2017 uk election
he is much more constrained as a mayor than a president though.
...

since we're back to 2020 primary stuff, this is beautiful enough that i have to share

Birthday rule? What the actual feck? Such a mature and logica ll way to determine medical coverage for people's children. Such a bullshit and barbaric system.
They have the same rule here - or at least it applies to my wife and me, who have the exact same insurance governance. But here, anything not covered by insurance #1 is passed on to #2, so it doesn't matter what's the order.

Barbaric is a little strong. It's just to ensure the same claim doesn't get paid by multiple insurers.

Then let the parents decide which one to use. Doing it by parents' birthday is just completely arbitrary, and is probably going to make the family's life worse 50% of the time.
Yah, it's not ideal. Unfortunately, individuals don't get to choose which one is their primary and secondary insurance. That's handled by the insurance companies. This "birthday rule" is the method they came up with for determining which insurance would be the primary for a child whose parents both have plans.

Once a year, there's a period called open enrollment where you can make changes to your insurance.

I never thought $2,000 check meant 2000 on top of the 600. Before the $600 checks were issued, no one was talking about $2,600 per person.

Doesn't really seem like a worthwhile talking point really. If the point is that people could use more help, then let's make that point moving forward not getting bogged down in this stuff.

If people have misunderstood the bill to mean 'an additional $2000', that mistake is on them.
That’s a fair assessment Dante, it would appear the blame falls solely at Warnock’s feet then.
EDIT - I suppose it could be argued that to receive the $2000 cheque, they would have been expected to send the original $600 cheque back in the mail. That seems logical too.

I didn't pay close attention to the wording while it was being discussed, but I certainly was under the impression they were talking about an additional 2000$ too. Having read this thread now 14000$ makes more sense but I'm not sure how much that helps democrats with people who have also been under that impression.

No it doesn't. Biden said "$2000 checks will go out the door immediately" well AFTER the $600 was already distributed. Ossoff said "we can pass $2000 relief checks for the people but we have to win this senate election.". This was also said AFTER.

However the larger point is that 2000 is just a number that Trump picked because it's round and his brain is dying. There's nothing magic about 600 or 1400 or 2000. The democrats can pass whatever they want to help people. The impact to The Deficit is entirely abstract. The impact to the life or death of regular people is real and immediate.

They could pass 2000 or 5000 or 1200 every month retroactively to last March. They don't do this because they do not want to.

We don't have the full facts yet.

Perhaps the $1,400 cheques will have rainbow flags on them...which would be just as good as getting $2k when you really stop to think about it.

Exactly.

The whole ''well actually if you read the small print, it really is only $1400'' argument misses the rather larger point that $2000 clearly isn't anywhere near enough in a global pandemic.
