Did you get the rave reviews for The Witness?
I never played it. Like I said, puzzle games aren’t usually my thing.

Not debating whether this game is actually brilliant or not (though sentiment on steam reviews right now seems to be that the critics have wildly overrated it), but I’ve read guides that said you should keep a fecking word document of things you’ve seen and stuff, that’s just not my idea of a fun game. I use word documents for work!

Also side note, it really annoys me how slow you move.

Saw that PSN ID last night. What the feck.

I've been replaying Doom Eternal ahead of the new one and, I've surprisingly, really enjoyed it.

The bits I remember not liking, like the jumping, have been fine. I forgot how forgiving it is. And the mechanics in these modern doom games are sensational.

I have two trophies left to platinum Shadow of War but they're so grindy and boring.

I’ve finally bought Cuphead, been meaning to for ages, now just to find time to actually play it…

Bit surprised myself but that Doom trailer doesn‘t do it for me. Dunno. It‘s gonna be an amazing FPS for sure but part of me thinks this would have been better suited for a Quake comeback. Or it just highlighted for me what elements are still missing from the doom1+2 games + the absence of a proper Quake (1) re-run.

Shadow of Mordor and Shadow of War platinum done! Brilliant games. Got a bit annoying at the end of each platinum, especially Shadow of War doing the online stuff but the story and Nemesis system is so good. Loved playing them.

Think I'm going to finish off the platinum of Forbidden West now and then move onto God of War Ragnarok next.

Depends on what happens with Oblivion, Clair Obscur and AC: Shadows. Want to play those three but don't want to pay full price!

I'm trying to slog my way through FF7 Crisis Core Reunion and I don't see why this game (or the PSP original) is rated so highly. Laughably infantile writing, mediocre-at-best combat mechanics and mindblowingly repetitive mission design, there's virtually nothing good to say about this. I went into this because I wanted to experience Zack's story but man, even that side of it seems barely worth it.

On another note, I recently completed Sea of Stars and found it decent, but not as good as I'd hoped. It's definitely charming but a bit too simplistic, both in terms of combat and characters. Being a massive fan of The Messenger (and particularly its soundtrack), I was a little disappointed in this as the next game from Sabotage, but it was still worth playing. The art is lovely and hearing variations of The Messenger's soundtrack throughout the game was pretty neat, even if it's nowhere near as good as that game's.

Yeah k struggled with Crisis Core for the same reasons. Got about half way through I think but was a slog.

I did the platinum for it but that was a huge grind due to the amount of missions there are to do. I can only think the reason it was rated as high as it is was is because it was on PSP originally. The PS5 port for me was c. 6/10. The game itself is alright but nothing special and the dialogue is really really bad.

Sea of Stars started off so well but then the combat was just the same thing over and over again, I finished it but was pretty disappointed by the end.

Yeah the combat system never evolves and definitely outstays its welcome by the end, despite the game's relatively modest runtime (for a JRPG-style game). Everything seems designed to provide zero friction, which sounds good on paper but leaves the whole experience feeling a little vapid.

Good lord. Who said Horizon Forbidden West had the best combat mechanics? The Melee Pit stuff was a nightmare to do. You input what it tells you and it doesn't work.

I think its widely accepted that combat against humans is somewhere between terrible and mediocre. Them Pit quests were a definite low point

Youtuber skill up. The melee combat is the game’s weakest part. He was referring to the combat you so 99 per cent of the time - ranged, which is pure fun.

A few mini reviews of the games I’ve finished recently.

Stanley Parable Ultra Deluxe - I consider the original to be among the best indie games ever made and this is essentially the complete / ultimate version of the game. So much wonderful new content (heh) but in the end, also a reminder of how phenomenal the original was. Had me grinning cheek to cheek or merrily chuckling time and time again. One of the greats.

9.5/10

Dredge -
Fishing - light horror indie mashup. Really enjoyed this. It’s got a simple but effective gameplay loop, a strong soundtrack, fairly deep mechanics for the genre and a solid narrative. I’d say that they could have done more with the horror elements and the narrative sort of just concluded abruptly for me. But otherwise it’s just a very well made video game.

8.5/10

Animal Well
- I have to say I’m slightly disappointed by this. It’s obviously a good game but I expected much for for the way it was regarded. I enjoyed the lack of handholding and mystery but at the same time, I’m not a fan of games that don’t make the effort giving you some hook / purpose to feed on especially when your goal tends to be collectables (scourge of single player games for me). I got the main ending and couldn’t be bothered with all the collectables thereafter. Very good while u played it but I wanted something more.

8.2/10

Dying Light The Following -
Loved the based game. Love this. Dying Light’s first person traversal remains unparalleled, and the moment to moment tension remains unchanged. Had a great time with it, among the better DLCs imo.

8.6/10 (for a DLC)

A few more I didn’t post on from little while back

Plague Tale : Requiem - Absolutely superb. I really liked the original and this is a sequel done to near perfection. I understand those who missed the intimacy and novelty of the first game but this evolution is necessary for sequels to build on the laid foundations. It’s a more ambitious game that increases the scale, widens the gameplay mechanics and improved the cinematic and moment to moment writing quality. It’s not a Naughty Dog all timer narrative experience but in terms of the games that have taken that influence and done something great with it, this is for me one of the best.

9/10

Psychonauts 2 -
I think this is the best Xbox game possibly in decades. Fantastic game. Art style, voice acting and narrative are all excellent. Gameplay can be a bit static for a platformer but other elements make up for it. Terrific.

8.8/10

Wastelands 3 -
So I a not a turn based guy or a CRPG guy. I must have tried Baldurs Gate and the likes as a kid but didn’t bother much this genre. I adore Disco Elysium but that’s also a unique experience that doesn’t follow a lot of the genre tropes. But I have came through, unscathed, so this is my first completed proper CRPG! And I definitely enjoyed it. Yes, games like this lose a bit of immersion for me but I liked the story, characters and choices. Hopefully this sets me up for playing BG3 at some point.

Ubisoft, the gaming giant behind Assassin's Creed, is in hot water again. Just as fans were raving about Assassin's Creed Shadows and its stunning take on feudal Japan, a bombshell dropped: privacy watchdog Noyb has accused Ubisoft of illegally harvesting player data without consent.

The group is pushing for a £79 million ($104 million) fine and the deletion of unlawfully collected data, filed with Austria's data protection authority on 24 April 2025.

With Far Cry and Rainbow Six also under scrutiny, this controversy could reshape how gaming companies handle your personal info.

Started playing the Disco Elysium: The Final Cut yesterday. I chatted with the kids playing next to the hanging corpse and, next thing I know, I'm back at the main screen, asking if I want to start a new game. I guess I lost or something? It was a bit abrupt.

So, I loaded up Detroit: Becoming Human instead, and I found it unplayable with the keyboard and mouse on PC. Examining the evidence was very hit and miss, so I plugged a controller into the PC and the sound went off. I sacked that game off and loaded up Sunless Skies Sovereign Edition, and the sound didn't work on it either, so I switched the PC off.

I'll have to sort the controller options on Steam next time I fancy playing.

That's weird.

Also a shame because it's a GOAT tier game.

My first save on Disco Elysium I tried to jump up to get the tie from the ceiling fan after just waking up, failed and watched as my character got a heart attack and I had to start a fresh save. So hey you did better than me. It's part of the experience.

Disco Elysium is a classic. Can't say that one happened to me, but the deaths in the game can be both hilarious and what the feck

As for the sound some controllers, the DS4/5 in particular, like to take over the PC's settings and some few games react poorly to that even when you switch it back. For every game on steam though, it's easy to change to user created profiles which help with custom controls, especially on games that don't play so well with controllers.

Oblivion: Remastered, anyone?
Here. Really like it, didn‘t really play an elder scrolls game before much except for a rather brief moment of mandatory skyrim. Reminds me upon old school rpgs like Albion and earlier DSA games so nostalgia plays a big part. Knowing me and open world games I try to stay close to the main questline/story otherwise I‘ll be lost pretty quick (and inevitably losing interest).

My personal favourite was when my MC called his station, got laughed at so hard for losing his gun that his mind broke from embarrassment and he just gave up on life. I'm sure you can get much crazier ones if you really go for it, but just how sudden and unexpected it was made it so hilarious. I believe there's even a way to die before you even wake up at the start, by losing an argument against your own mind or something.

I think that happened to me cause I kept hitting on the blonde woman and saying shit like "hey, you me go f*ck" and basically died from embarrassment every time she rejected my MC or something?
