The Monkey

A horror comedy about two brothers who inherit an evil toy monkey from their father. The titular simian causes the death of those around them in a variety of inventive, and often messy, ways.

It is quite reminiscent of the Final Destination films, in that most of the fun comes from seeing how the next death will come. There is one that involves so much stupidity on the part of the victim that it becomes eye roll worthy.

Where it falls down are the parts between The Monkey’s antics. The story is so thin it’s almost like it’s been inserted at the last moment, and serves only as a flimsy connection between the deaths.

It’s a fun cinema watch, especially with an audience that are going to react. I also enjoyed the couple of cameos the film gave us.

6/10

The Gorge (2025)

The first half was good. Build up the mystery and the romance. The second half was terrible.

I’d also give it 4/10. It felt like a glimpse into the future where AI churns out movie slop to double screen after a shite day at work, remembering nothing when it’s over. Such a crashingly mediocre bit of filmmaking.

Can't be arsed to watch anything with Miles Teller in it after all the stories about how much of a grifting prick he is.
I'm with you. He's another one I just don't care to watch.

At the end of the day it really comes down to that: can you stand watching a particular actor pretend to be involved in some human emotions for 2 hours, or not? Notice how Teller was not brought along to the next Damien Chazelle projects. You either have to accept there's going to be some wild acting (Nicolas Cage), or some sexual interest (Nicolas Cage, Anne Hathaway), or maybe you think you could be friends with them in real life (neither). When I see someone like Miles Teller, he looks like a dick, and from what I have read, he is a dick. I don't think you can get around that dickness in any character he's trying to portray.

Not to reopen the Range Wars, but he also has no range.

Ethan Hawke, Jude Law, Eddie Redmayne, Simon Pegg, Martin Freeman, Bumbledick Bandersnatch, Adrian Brody, Nick!fecking!Frost!, Leo DiCaprio, Channing Tatum, Chris Pratt!, Jonah Hill, Seth Rogen, Don Cheadle. So many actors I just have zero interest in watching them try to portray anything. And we are stuck with them, forever.

They're all dicks, or you just don't like what they bring to their roles?

Plane was fun. It's an action thriller starring Gerard Butler and Mike Colter. It's the usual pretty mindless type of film, but it keeps the tension and action going and has a surprisingly realistic touch in some of the conversations and emotions. Above average in its genre. 7/10

Wait til you see the sequel, Tank.

Anyone else watched The Conclave. Certainly not a lot of action. But a very clever storyline about how a Pope is voted. And the acting is very good.

Yeah, watched it a few nights ago.

Was expecting something else I think given rave reviews and people saying Oscar favourite. Thought it was “ok”, nicely made, ok performances, bit of intrigue, love everything Fiennes does, but nothing that grabbed me and out of the two key facts about the ending, I thought one was obvious from very early on in the film.

Again…ok (for me).

I'm devastated to learn that you're not actually joking about Ship. They'll round out the trilogy with Train.
I wonder if the makers of Speed will sue for lame sequel idea trademark violation.

Saw The Monkey, slightly entertaining but kind of all over the place plus the dark humour wasn't really funny. Probably would recommend to wait until its on streaming.

Soundtrack to a Coup d'Etat

Documentary about 60’s Congo and the prime ministership of Patrice Lumumba. Features an incredible amount of historical footage and interviews which are all put together with free following editing to match the jazz soundtrack.

It’s brute materialism linking together Belgium colonialism, American civil rights, CIA funded jazz groups, Mi5 spying, the charismatic baldness of Mr Kruschev, bribery, assassinations, political infighting of the Congo and even the atomic bomb.

Best film I’ve seen this year and a must watch.

TY.

A masterful work.

No worries. Some of the footage is so open with CIA and Mi5 agents very casually talking about assassinations and buying votes. Or very strange with Nina Simone having no idea she was in a music group funded by the CIA(Very similar to the recent news about USAID).

I’ve just ordered Andrée Blouin autobiography due to the documentary.

You had me at “CIA funded jazz groups”.

Great interview here and also at 27:20 Guadagnino talks about his love of American Psycho.

This is brilliant. He mentions loads of films that I haven't seen or even heard of (and that I probably never will) but with such passion and respect to make it really enjoyable. I love that he teases he might re-make American Psycho (I'd absolutely love to see his vision for it) and that he finishes that interview with a Miyazaki film. In general, every interview I've seen of this guy just makes me like him more, he seems like a person you'd love to sit down with for an evening, with a glass of Italian wine, and talk about life and cinema.

- Do you think that's why you want that cinema to be showcased more?
- No. It's because it's great cinema. I want great cinema to be showcased more, and bad cinema to be showcased less.
