Desailly is a great pick. Surprised no one else went for him till now. I really played with the idea of having Desailly in the team but I needed one of the old players for the minimum three players criteria!

That's true. But it came down to the fact I rate Kohler higher as a centre-half and in 1992 he was at his absolute peak. Not that Desailly isn't a great pick, especially in the fourth round, and has two solid Euros to back it up.
Also with Kohler you can partner him with anyone and he makes them stronger whereas Desailly with a weak partner doesn't give off that same vibe of security at the back.
I know. Kohler is the better CB, but the trade off down to Desailly is not that big, esp since we are only considering Euro's. So thought it would be worth a gamble.

God this is slow. We should have done it without the AM's
In how many cases has an AM slowed it down? Theon wasn't online for the entire day. Me being an AM or not would not have changed that. People will always find stuff to complain about.

It seems like everyone has to take an hour when they come online to have a conversation with the AM before picking.

Aye and Raees and I have pretty consistently made our pick within an hour or so (or less).

If you read the thread, you would see that I didn't even know about the pick. Theon made it. People have jobs and a life too my friend.

Exactly and it doesn't help when most of our picks get picked literally the turn or two before ours.

Btw Gio I saw a vid of Henry v Nesta at Euro 2000 Final where he won man of the match - all I can say is

Valery Voronin

I have a hard time posting write-ups as my picks go, because of all "not naming" thing, so I will try and post them after the drafting ends. A tragic story with this one :(

Sorry about that buddy. An old friend just returned and we are out to celebrate. Which means in a few minutes I'll won't be in my senses. So it's best I do this later. :D
I'm just giving you a hard time. Although based on what you told me...this would be the perfect time for your player write up. And tactics too while we're at it ;)

Joining his partner in crime Maldini, both of whom made the team of the tournament in 1988, and Moore to form an impregnable defense - Giuseppe Bergomi

Fun fact about Voronin - he is the first Soviet player with a personal sponsor (Adidas). Illegal, of course, it wasn't allowed at that time. They paid him 500 pounds so that he would play in their boots.

As fun as "Sheldon Cooper's fun with flags"

Who said I'm going to play a back 3? It is a nice option to have though.

Bergomi played as a side back or say a more tucked in RB role and never really played as an orthodox full back. If I use him in a back 3 as a RCB, it is more or less close to his normal individual role that he played for Italy although the dynamics of the team changes, naturally. I'm not exactly making a wholesale change here playing a full back as a central midfielder or making him play in a vastly different role. For instance I wondered if Rijkaard played as a DM in the Euros as it is quite a significant change from a sweeper role or CB role that I thought he only played in the Euros but it seems he did actually play as a DM in the 92 tournament so that's fine.

If his role in your team is close enough to his actual role back in the tournament, then I doubt anyone will complain. Obviously you're allowed to adjust to different tactics. I didn't make it a rule, because you need some leeway in that regard.

However, I'd think about adjusting too much. The first and second round picks all are players worthy to have a team built around them and if you want them to get the full credit for their performances, better use them in their best position.
Like Balu said it's not like we don't even have room for slight tactical changes and are rigidly expected to play the players in the exact same role and in the exact same set up. There is a fair bit of tactical leniency and leeway afforded and I don't think I'm altering his role too much heavily. Unless Balu says otherwise of course.

Agreed to a large extent, although passing from the back has become such a feature of the match debates these days and Desailly has enough quality on the ball to reasonably be partnered with either a sweeper or stopper type without criticism in that aspect.

Based on picks till now, this is my TotT on Euro performances:

Edit: replace one of the strikers with Puskas, it'll satisfy the pre-66 requirements too ;)
  • Desailly wasn't good enough at DM position at Euro to justify his pick here - either replace Kohler, or get him out of the team
  • Not sure about Müller - he is fantastic, but there are some forwards that I would've picked before him, probably. He wasn't player of the tournament, he was only third best player in his team in 72. Especially if you need to fit in another oldie - Sarosi, Sindelar or Puskas, for example. I understand the urge to stick with familiar faces though
  • edited - on a second thought, Masopust shouldn't be here. He made it into the 60 dream team, but he wasn't his Ballon D'Or self, we saw a couple of more impressive midfield performances here. I understand that you're biased a little - Netto was best midfielder at that Euro and he is actually a better fit for a left side of a diamond, with all his left flank experience

edit: No Beckenbauer? It's hard to fit in both him and Sammer, I understand

Without considering the picks, Sammer and Desailly have to be swapped around. Sammer had one of the iconic Euro tournaments marauding up to centre forward from his sweeper position. Why maroon him as an orthodox centre half?

Maybe some are not the best individuals (like Netto and Tigana), but I feel that this set-up will suit the best player here better. Only one old player as I didn't want to mess with positions/formations - I will save those debates to the match-threads.

Edit:
  • age restriction - fail
  • nationality restriction - fail
I'm quite good at it
