Yawn, not necessarily having a pop at Ole but jesus I wish he would stop with this line, he will be left with egg on his face when once again our incompetent board let him down
Given that they didn’t want to spend ridiculous money on Sancho I’m not sure it was a let down

said with the benefit of hindsight. I was pleading for his signature

It’s still a CB we need and a good DM. Looking at the shambles it was yet again last night not sure Sancho is what we need but who wouldn’t want Haaland

Will we unpause it? Will it play automatically because we’ve left it too long on pause? Will Phil Jones ruin everything by eating the remote?
That's pretty disappointing if true, not that bothered about Sancho but it doesn't sound like we are dipping on him for a top striker, it seems more like we are going to spend the bulk on a CB and buy some cheap bum for the striker position. The fact midfield isn't even mentioned in recent articles is mind boggling, it's like they are forgetting Pogba is off and Matic's legs left a while ago.

Martial doesn't count? Rashford can play up front if pushed, and then we'd be talking injuries to the other 3. How much depth do we want in one position with such glaring holes elsewhere?
Martial doesn't really enter my mind for the future, as I don't believe he should have one at the club. Can't be relied on in any position. Rashford up front is a waste, of course if needed he can play there, but it's clearly not a role he excels in.

Unfortunately we have glaring holes all over the pitch.

The lack of midfield transfer talk from The Athletic is because they don't want to assume that Pogba will be off. Luckhurst has already stated that we'll spend on the midfield if we sell Pogba. If we can't sell him, then we can't expect any new midfielders to come in.

How can they think Pogba isn't going though? His agent pretty much flat out said it was over for him at United. Also, even if Pogba stayed we still need a proper DM to partner him, the midfield balance has been off all season.

I'm sure that they'll talk about midfield improvements if there's a new development with Pogba. It's been a while since we heard/read anything about his situation.

Obviously, we don't have enough money to get a good-quality midfielder in after the striker and centre back roles, so even if we improve on them, we have to hope for a bargain of a deal to get an improvement on what we currently have. The priorities are centre back > striker > midfielder/backup right back.

I don't know how I feel about that price, especially since he's not that good. I'd have expected lower given that he's in the final year of his contract.

EDIT: 2nd story

Bild see the recent Athletic report on United deprioritising Sancho as a negotiation tactic to bring the price down further.

Basically we can't afford or won't pay to fill in all the gaps this summer. Yet another CB and a striker, where we have currently 3/4 players (Cavani, Martial, Greenwood & maybe Rashford).
Yeah here are these reports about us not spending much in the summer that I knew was coming, we will have to find buyers for Pogba & Martial if we want to have any kind of money to spend because the owners won't put it up that's for sure

Dortmund need a to drum up a bit of interest if they're going to get a sizeable sum for Sancho. He only has 2 years left on his contract.

Ugh more cheap shortcuts because no money to address the 3/4 big issues in the first XI
The academy signings are completely separate from the first-team ones. They've never affected our first-team transfer activity in the past, and I don't expect them to now and in the future even if the Glazers cut United's academy funding.

United have some competition for Milenkovic, unsurprisingly. Let's see if the Florentine media's tone remains the same.

The thing is I don't see what else is really to add, if we don't sell him this summer he goes for nothing and there's no chance he extends.

The priorities make no sense to me mate, we aren't struggling to score goals, but we do struggle constantly in midfield, yet we are prioritising a position that only has 2 decent options on the market.

We shall see if Pogba does indeed go. Sure, the situation earlier in the season points to that, but will that remain the case? I don't know. Do I think he'll leave us this summer? If a club offers us 80 million Euros, I don't think United will turn it down. At the moment, though, no club has been reliably linked with him, which is why I doubt all of this. Juventus are the closest, and the links only exist due to Raiola and Pogba's prior history, not because of any recent developments.

If we had Cavani signed up by now, then I'd agree, our priorities wouldn't have made much sense. As it stands, we've yet to sign him up, and if he leaves us this summer, then we will desperately need a striker. Martial may perform better without any competition, but the lack of depth will hurt us big time. Personally, I don't see Rashford as a striker, and Greenwood will need to refine his game further before he can be effective for us up front. I doubt that the United higher-ups or fans would tolerate Greenwood's performances if he isn't scoring regularly.

They work parallel to each other. We always have youth budgets. We always buy highly rated youngsters for our youth team. Some never get close to first team, some do.

Derby need the money so we are literally taking three youth team players we like for a very reasonable fee. If one becomes a hit or at worst we make a profit on the sale, then it was more than worth it.

Why is this club so adamant they don't need to sign a proper DM this summer when we are so short in that area, just maybe we would play a bit more expansive next season if we didn't have two holders every big game we play

Fukkin hell. James put in a fine performance in the second half yesterday but no way was he MOTM in any match I’ve ever seen him play for United.

That said, I actually wouldn’t mind keeping him for another season. He has his uses in the right situations.

That’s so not accurate. We’ve always signed young players irrespective of how strong or weak the 1st team is. There’s a completely separate transfer policy for the development squad.

What evidence do you have that it isn’t on the list of our summer targets?

I thought The Athletic article might have been a negotiation tactic, this likely could be drawn out until the end of summer, as we should only be doing a deal on our terms.

I think it is. They realised this when we didn’t cave in to their stupid demand in summer

There are 4 big gaps in our first team at the moment (in no particular order):
  • Centre back (lack of an athletic defender beyond Bailly; not much trust in Tuanzebe at the moment)
  • Defensive midfield (Matic + Pogba replacements)
  • Right wing (i.e. Sancho)
  • Striker
The only other gap that exists is the lack of depth at right back, but that's not a major gap.

Given the impact that COVID has had on our finances, we won't be able to address every possible position. Even before the pandemic, we weren't necessarily addressing every weak point at once. The club have chosen to prioritise the centre back and striker positions for this summer and will look to upgrade the rest in the future (or if additional money is made available via sales).

The centre back priority is obvious. The striker one only makes sense to me if Cavani won't be staying (likelier given the delay in exercising the option). Otherwise, I don't see why we'd get another striker unless we won't be viewing Martial as one (unlikely). The Sancho situation makes sense (Dortmund have basically declared him for sale, ceding their position of power to the buying clubs). Regarding the midfield situation:

What evidence do you have that it isn’t on the list of our summer targets?
Luckhurst has stated a few days ago that United would only go after a new midfielder if they sell Pogba. Besides that, the lack of talk about a new midfielder from the rest of the reliable journalists makes me think that we may not be prioritising a midfielder this summer as much as a centre back or striker (more reports on both of those positions). Even foreign media outlets haven't linked us with new midfielders.

The only way we'd get linked with new midfielders is if we commit to selling Pogba this summer. Until that's the case, I don't see us really going after a new midfielder unless we get a sudden cash injection from elsewhere.

Window is closed dude, not sure whom you're expecting us to sign right now. Personally very happy with our youth recruitment, seem to have poached quite a few excellent prospects.
