Viktor Gyökeres

Liverpool going for Leverkusen lad, Celski going for Delap, Arsenal going for Sesko, City have Haaland, Bayern have Kane, Newcastle have Isak, Barca and Real having their attack settled.

Hm......our cunning plan is all set.

He’s one of the few worth giving crazy wages to, goals cost a lot of money and this guy has played under Amorim too. Hopefully he can convince him.

From everything we've seen and known of him as a person i seriously doubt he's gonna make this decision based on who throws more money at him. Priority is a good project and he wants to win.

Still gonna end up at Arsenal I reckon

I haven't seen enough goals from him that showcase intelligent movement and an ability to peel away from defenders. You want a striker that is able to outfox defenders and beat them to balls coming into the penalty area, whether in the air or on the ground. That is the quality that makes the best strikers stand out.

Most of his non-penalty goals involve him running at defenders and shooting. If he cannot run past Premier League defenders the way he does in the Portuguese league, he may struggle here, and may become another striker that our players struggle to create clear chances for.

When you watch compilations of top strikers, past and present, the difference is clear. They have skills that translate to any league. Put the ball in the box, and they will find a way to make a chance from it. I haven't seen that trait in Gyokeres.

Everything I've seen of him suggests he's a Championship/Portuguese league level player.

I'm glad that we don't appear to be interested in him.

Slightly above Championship level but yeah I’ve never been less interested in a striker with 40+ goals than him

I’ve watched a lot of Sporting games in their entirety this year. This guy is the real
deal. He won’t score 53 goals in England, but he will get in the mid to high 20s, and will be a great compliment to a player like Cunha.

It was €65m, so Arsenal's offer isn't too far off.
€55m was reported as the amount Sporting would accept for the past few months. I had an idea he would go for more and when you consider the wage package he will likely get it’s a big investment and a bit of a gamble to say the least.

The €65m number was reported by Romano months ago as a reduction from 100m because of an existing deal between the player and club to leave for a reduced fee.

Right but for a while here he was talked about as a possiblity for €55m and that he wouldn’t be that much more expensive than Delap. I’m not sure where it came from and can’t be bothered to look it up but I do remember seeing some tweets referencing that amount at some point. Obviously that’s not the case. Not advocating for Delap just making the point that Gyökeres will cost a wedge in the end when you consider the wage package.

Yes that's correct. But that was £55m not euros, which would be around €65m

27 non penalty goals in the Portuguese league

if he plays in the Premier League, would 13-15 non penalty league goals be a reasonable estimate?

Do you lot think he can challenge Haaland as premier leagues best striker?
Isak just outscored Haaland (by a goal) to be the top #9 for the season. Granted Haaland has had injuries and missed some games, but at the moment, it's not clear who is the top dog between those two.

If Gyokeres is in a team that supplies him as much as Haaland is accustomed to, I think he can hit 20 PL goals, but I don't think he's better than the Norwegian, and Isak is a better player and capable in a lot more scenarios. More importantly, we know what these two look like against low blocks, PL defenders and probably even more importantly, PL keepers.

If you watch his goal compilation vid above, a good number of those goals don't happen in the PL, plus he is not going to be some athletic freak here where he looks like a man against boys in Portugal, so he's going to have to use more guile and craft to make opportunities for himself. Can he carryover 1:1 as is? I don't think so, but that's speaking about pure theory and hypothetical as we simply don't know if this guy will find low blocks and less space little to no problem.

Until we find out just how special this guy is or is not, it's common sense to lean toward it being doubtful he can outright usurp these two. Still, some players come to the PL and go up a level, others get swallowed up by it - I doubt he will remain the same, and if I were to bet about better or worse, common sense would tell me worse is more likely than better. 15-20 goals would be an excellent return.

We should note that Haaland is a £150m-£200m player and Isak would be expected to fetch £100m-£150m, so it's not the same ballpark as a £60m-£70m Gyokeres until he proves otherwise. It's only the likes of Mbappe, Kane and Lewandowski that would be expected to come to the PL as they are and outdo what's here or be in contention as the top #9.

Arsenal will be good next season. Can’t see any reason why he would choose us. If the sign A good replacement for Martinelli as well and they’re 100% title challengers.

Most of his goals took a lot of time in the box. He wouldn’t get that here. Just curious: Which skillset of him convinced you he could translate that success to the PL?

The fundamental issue is that even if he wants to join us due to the relationship with Amorim, due to the season we have just had there is no guarantee that Amorim sees Christmas, then what?

In terms of translating to the PL, the same could have been said of Bruno, and look how that has worked out. The league is lacking ruthless number 9s, and generally defenders seem to struggle against them here, so I can see him being a massive threat for whomever gets him.
