What should we do for the right wing if we don't get Sancho in the upcoming window?

I was speaking to a Dutch friend of mine who is a Ajax fan and he was telling me about a young RW player they have signed from Sao Paulo called Antony who is only 20. I watched him play in Ajax's preseason game against Eintracht Frankfurt and he was electric. And from first viewing I must say I was very impressed. His acceleration and close control was impeccable and he even threw in some party pieces which bamboozled the opposition on the right flank.

I think he's a player we should keep an eye on for sure because he looks to have a very bright future. Ajax signed him for £14m according to reports.

He seems very good on the byline. That kind of player is so rare nowadays, especially on the right. Very neat footballer, definitely one for the future.

Imo we should either get Sancho or a loan. No point in buying another potential while we already have Greenwood and James.

Of course you may argue that it's good to buy a potential and hope that he'd come good. But even a good potential one cost like 50-60m these days. What if he turns out a flop or a mediocre one? We have already so many deadwoods that shipping them out is difficult enough.

Imo it's a lot safer and financially wiser to go for an established RW on one year loan. That way we'd fix our right wing for the next season while still be able to keep the money for Sancho in Jan or next summer. Also enough room for Greenwood and James to develop. And if the loan doesn't work, it's just a year instead of another deadwood on a 5 years deal.

A good potential one doesn't cost ridiculous money as long we look in the right market. South America is a market we need to tap into and exploit if possible to and sign the like of Antony and send out on loan.
 
Mata for another ten years wouldn't be too bad. Need to protect our assets.

In reality though I would hope to see the club get a proper backup to Greenwood for this season and get Sancho next summer.

Say we move from Greenwood/Mata to Greenwood/Brooks now, then Sancho/ Greenwood/Brooks next summer.

It could free up Greenwood to go up to the striker role when Martial gets injured or needs a rest.

South America youngsters market is dominated by Barcelona, Madrid, ATM, Porto, Benfica etc. Spanish and Portuguese clubs. They have so many connections there and young players there like to sign for them as well. Because of the similarities in languages and culture. And also the difficulty of obtaining a work permit in the UK. Even in FM it's basically impossible for United to sign a good youngster there because of the work permit.

It's easier said than done I think. And basically anytime we knock on their doors asking for a youngster the price would just go triple. They still think English clubs have a lot of money, especially us.

He doesn't have an EU passport. This is the big issue with South Americans and especially Brazilians. They can often get EU passports, but it takes them a few years. By the time they have the passport they're no longer prospects. By then, those still rated good enough for us cost just as much as any other non-English player.

Both Man City and Chelsea tried to sign him from Sao Paulo. City wanted to loan him to SCP in Portugal for 2 years but he chose to go to Ajax who broke their transfer record to sign him for around £14m.

City have also signed the biggest fullback talent in South America in Yan Couto and recently signed Diego Rosa who is part of the same team as Couto who won the u17 world cup. They will both go out on loan eventually once they turn 18.

All that would result in some first team players in at least 3 years and cost quite some money as well I think. At least some 30m for 2-3 good youngsters a year. While we have to fix our first team and backup now. And this approach would need some structure changes like a DoF I think. Someone who has good connections and knowledge in the football world. Also a big overhaul in the scouting network.

I'm all for this but imo it'd be better for us now to concentrate all our resources in fixing more urgent issues, like our first team players and backup.

I agree with this.

Loan someone. Why not loan Perisic? He's just won the Treble with Bayern. Really, in the immediate future, all we need is someone to make sure we don't run Mason ragged but who is still a threat.

Loan someone in, then go back in for Sancho next summer.

This is the kind of player we should be buying. Barca and Real mostly get Brazilian talents like Neymar, Vinicius, Rodrygo etc. We never go in for South American talents.
 
VdB, Brooks and go large on Upemecano, it should be affordable if we can move a few players on. Definitely addresses a few issues, Brooks is good enough to rotate with Greenwood and offer something different from the bench. I’d be quite happy with that in a Sancho less summer, can go back for him next season.

I think City will buy a club in Brazil as part of their City project and get all the best Brazilian talents and use it as a platform to groom them in to Machester City.
 
How much would Bournemouth ask for David Brooks? £30-40 mil?

Or do we find a more experienced winger who is closer to their peak, i do wonder.

My predominantly Ajax supporting Dutch WhatsApp group love this guy and I’ve gotta say I like the look of him.

Obviously too early to tell how far he’ll go but all the technique is there.

I would take Perisic on loan or for less than 20 mil. He’s a wing specialist that could help Greenwood and Rashford in their development
 
I'd rather not contemplate the possibility of not bringing in Sancho this summer. There's really no excuse for failing to do so.

But if Sancho is beyond our reach I'd go for Brooks, although the 40m fee is excessive. Greenwood is the superior forward and Brooks wouldn't disrupt Greenwood's ambitions, but we all know we need to strengthen the front line and Brooks like an interesting prospect. And if we do bring in Brooks now we could still bring in Sancho in either of the next two transfer windows and further winnow down the existing deadwood as we do so. There's be nothing wrong with having Rashford, Martial, Greenwood, Brooks and Sancho in the squad. I assume, after all, that Ighalo, Mata and others who need not be named are not in Ole's long-term plans.
 
CB, LB and RW and were challenging. Ideally DM to complete the squad but it wont happen. We wont get 5, maybe 2 or 3.
We will always be about three signings short to fill out the squad and complete it (meaning we are in a position where we only need one or two each season to go in and out).

Next season we will probably need a striker, DM and maybe two more and only get 1 or 2.
 
Marcus Edwards...Young, Exciting, Super talented, English, Left footed RW, Shortlisted for Portugals player of the year, wouldnt cost a fortune, miles better than James if we eventually get Sancho aswel. Had some attitude issues at Spurs but seems to have matured since then.
He's a no brainer for me, even if we get Sancho next summer...Martial, Rashford, Greenwood, Sancho and Edwards gives a quality young set of Attacking options, 5 players for 3 roles with loads of versatility between them, ideal. Ship James, Mata, Lingard and Peirera out if and when possible over the next couple of windows

The long term revenue prospects for the club are bright if we compete at the top level. If we go small ball we jeopardize hitting those revenue targets. That doesn’t mean spend huge amounts in all positions, but we have an opportunity to bring in an elite player who is arguably the superior of Pogba and Bruno already, and is substantially superior to Rashford and Martial.
 
Perisic can cover for both Greenwood and Rashford, give some added experience in front also, which we definitely lack. He knows how to win, and won’t be slacking tracking back, which Rashford and Greenwood can greatly learn from.
He just learnt what German efficiency is all about this past season!

Gareth Bale on loan for 1 year with a reasonable wage will be appropriate. Look at the impact Bayern could get from Coutinho on loan last season.
Bale hogs the right wing, so would be a better fit than Perisic who plays mostly on left wing.

someone who can play on both wings like Perisic would be a better backup, especially knowing Rashford’s mindset cannot withstand a full season, and we have no cover for him.

Perisic is a better professional than Bale, and would cost significantly less. A loan of 1 year like he just had with Bayern would be enough.

so if we’re not going the Sancho route, this would give us more resources to get the likes of Thiago, Upamecano. I would also get Reguilon, who would push Shaw to up his game.

Perisic (1 year loan or 10-12 mil buy), Thiago (25 mil), Upamecano (50-60 mil) and Reguilon (25 mil). This gives you a lot more options, experience, winning mentality, versatility, depth to compete on all fronts.

Yeah I like Perisic. Good crosser and two footed as well. Probably not good idea for a permanent deal but one year loan is good I think.

As far as I know Inter doesn't need him anymore simply because Conte prefer his 352. However they're looking to sell the player not loan I think. Probably for around €20m.
