Who replaces Ten Hag?

Glasgow resident these days.
ETH is apparently on about £9m a year with only one year left on his contract, and we normally have clauses in the managers contract where they are cheaper to sack if they fail to get CL. So it'd probably cost about £5m. Maybe add another million or so for the rest of his coaching team. So not that much.

Meanwhile, if we fail to finish in the top 4 or 5 next season it'll cost us far, far more than that. Our biggest sponsor (and likely many of our sponsors) have clauses in the contract where the amount they pay us drops dramatically if we fail to make the CL two years in a row. Combine that with the loss of prizemoney and television money, and failing to qualify for the CL again would cost us at least £40m (and I wouldn't be surprised if it was over £50m).

So even if it does cost us a bit to sack ETH and bring in the right replacement, it would easily be worth it financially if it's the difference between making the CL or not.
I'm basing it off what I've read about his contract. Let's hope you're right and i'm wrong - would be much more palpable at £5m. We need to factor in his backroom staff who will be on similar length contracts too I guess. Obviously, a lot cheaper to pay off though.

Even if it was £15m, I'd be tempted to get rid now and put in an interim as I don't see it being any worse and we could scrape a european finish.

Which is what everyone said about Ten Hag too. Amorim is a risky option. Plenty of more proven alternatives out there. Man Utd in transition shouldn't be going for someone with no proven ability to do the job at a high level and with high level players. It's different with Liverpool, because they have a quite decent squad and nowhere near as many issues at the club.
And we’ve tried that with LVG, Mourinho. It hasn’t worked. A risky option could work now that we have a proper structure coming into place. Whoever our next manager is going to be is lucky because there going to have the support like none of the previous ones have had.

Having dwelled on it I'm all aboard the Xavi train now, that way if the scousers eventually get Alonso it can be Xabi vs. Xavi.

LVG was about to retire and his glory days were long gone. He also had a track record of delivering dull football and falling out with star players and the board. Mou was horribly toxic with a negative management style, was getting increasingly found out, should never have been appointed. I dont think we can look at these two and say we tried safe/ experienced hands, they were not that.

He might feel he's taken that squad as far as he can.
That seems unlikely. Watkins in his prime, Duran is 20. Diaby and Zaniolo are 24. Ramsey, Rogers and Iroegbunam are 22 and under. Defence is where they're aging, but they'll likely invest - they're in a very enviable position.

As true as that is, he won't elevate the team to be challenging for major silverware unless he can flex in the transfer market and have an attractive wage bill.

Im sure he'd jump at the chance to be in the mix for a top club. He probably sees that as unfinished business after the Arsenal failure.

This is something our fan base (in general) never seem to get.

Among Liverpool's first signings with Klopp in charge are: Grujic, Caulker (loan), Karius, Klavan and Solanke. Since then, they've paid fairly large fees for the likes of Keita and Nunez.

Among Arsenal's first signings with Arteta in charge are: Mari, Cedric, Willian, Tavares and Lokonga. Could even add Ramsdale to that list.

Among City's first signings with Guardiola in charge are: Nolito, Bravo, Danilo and Mendy. Since then, Torres and Phillips have had very short stints at the club, and even Sane and Cancelo have expensively come and gone, even if they were decent while they were there.
Yeah its worth a mention for sure.

Even last summer Pep spent a combined 152 million euros on Matheus Nunez and Gvardiol and you wouldn't call either a massive success!

But when you are treble winners you get the luxury of adding players without the need for instant success or a transformative effect on the entire team. At United as soon as you pay over 60 million the eyes of the world are on them to turn a team from 5th-6th in title challengers within the space of a few months.

It's impossible.

Villa have some serious backing to be honest

They do have an attractive wage proposition, it's the reason Kamara went there. He's on 100k+ and they've managed to sign some very highly rated players under him without CL. I guess it depends what you mean major silverware, he could definitely win a cup domestically he certainly knows how to win the EL.

Villa are a top club to be fair, they have history, a great ground and now will probably have some serious spending power as well as being in the champions league (potentially). I doubt he would be in the slightest bit interested to leave Villa now to join our shit show after his experiences with PSG and Arsenal.

He came to my mind as well recently and I wondered why he wasn’t linked with us, despite being the most available of all candidates with exception of Potter.

And ironically one of his parting shots when he announced he was leaving Barcelona to the press was something along the lines ‘You keep asking if I‘m going to be the Ferguson of Barcelona, the truth is you won’t allow that to happen and no-one can with all the unrealistic demands proposed’.

He’d definitely command the respect of the players and based on that above parting shot, he’s not afraid to speak his mind.
With Berrada coming in, Xavi could be an interesting choice. Hopefully that means the end of low IQ and technical players that we have.

Genuine question

Why do people keep suggesting managers who quite clearly aren’t one of the best managers in the world?

Yes we aren’t getting Guardiola or Klopp. But why do we need to feast at this table of Potter/Southgate/De Zerbi? Why not just get the best manager we can?

It doesn't matter who the manager is if you then lumber him with Casemiro and Mason Mount.

Who is that then?
And who is to say Potter/Southgate/RDZ aren’t the best we can currently get?

How on earth you lumping in Mount with Casemiro? Give him a chance.

Casemiro on the other hand should never see minutes for us again.

Answer your own question

List who you think are the best 6-10 managers in the world currently, in no particular order, and then explain why you don’t think United should be aiming for any of them

I don’t need to answer it because I think we should be calling the best managers in the world. I’m not suggesting Potter, De Zerbi or any of these clowns

Who is that, though? That's the question. Alonso is a no-go, Inzaghi seems to be staying at Inter, Nagelsmann might want a second go at Bayern or enjoy the Euros enough to stick with Germany.

I don't see a real stand out candidate, but then I though ten Hag was a stand out candidate. That's why I'm pretty at peace with the idea the next manager may not be the one long term, but has to be someone committed to making us play the kind of football we want to see played. Tired of the "top 4 at any cost" mantra we've slipped into.

I suppose ETH did marvellous well in his interview to secure this job. When ask who he sign? He probably mentioned LCB, backup LB, DM, CM and LW. Guess what we sign all the players he wants and we still suck. I think the interview question should not include who we should sign but without significant signings, how would you setup this team with the current players to challenge top 4? Which current players would you keep and who would you sell and why? We are done with signings, we have sign hundreds of millions of players. We need a managers who can motivate current players. Let's find a manager that promote youth development and ensure 1-2 young players are promoted each year. Someone who is ruthless is selling older players. I don't mind finishing in mid table for a few season as long as there is progress on the pitch.

How did I know you wouldn’t be able to. Don’t worry. Go back to your crayons
Who you suggesting, for example?
If I’m Berrada, I’ll literally go for the best. I’d even be calling Guardiola and Klopp’s agents in the million to one chance they would at least talk about it, before I’d resort to some of the names coming out on here.

My question is valid. But nobody will answer it because they can’t.

Well I’d rather see Inzaghi etc mentioned than some of the names here. At least let’s talk about managers who have a chance of succeeding or becoming “best in class”

Why are we having conversations about Potter etc all the time. It’s obviously not happening if United are serious and i don’t see why people think that’s our level

Pep and Klopp are not happening, so who else?

I just read that Nagelsmann had a 70+% win rate at Bayern?! Why the feck did they sack him mid season?
I think it was mainly due to off the field issues. He clashed with big personalities in the dressing room such as Neuer, apparently.

So after a quick google according to 90mins.com top 5 reads

Pep
Klopp
Ancelotti
Inzaghi
Arteta

ESPN lists

Pep
Ancellotti
Spalletti
Arteta
Klopp.

Fourfourtwo includes:

Pep
Klopp
Ancelotti
Arteta
Tuchel

We aren’t getting Pep, Klopp, Ancelotti or Arteta for obvious reasons, so would you like Tuchel or Spalletti? For what it’s worth, if we do part ways with Erik, I’d be happy to see Tuchel hired above all others.

Ten Hag is ranked 7th by ESPN. RDZ is amongst a couple of top 10s. No mention of Southgate or Potter, predictably. Is it worth starting again just to move up a rank or 2? I don’t think so.

So to answer your ‘genuine question’ Why do people keep suggesting managers who quite clearly aren’t one of the best managers in the world? That’s why. The best managers in the world aren’t available, and if they were would most like go to Bayern or Liverpool for example instead of us.

I see.

Seems like he could be the obvious choice to replace ETH - that win percentage and the fact that he’s won trophies (albeit in the German league) seems like a no brainer if we sort out our board level structure.

The reason is simple, some fans have no plan b. Sack the manager then link the utd job to another manager who is highly unlikely to come. So we end up with southgate.

Because Tuchel was available (official reason).

Sounds stupid? Yes.

Which is why the clowns who decided that (Kahn and Salihamidzic) were themselves sacked shortly after they did that.

You’ve jumped the gun a bit there sunshine. I was researching. Stop being a dick and read my follow up. Otherwise your question wasn’t genuine at all.
That answer was fine. But I still think there’s a huge gap between the best managers and Potter etc

Unai Emery and Julen Lopopotomus (however it’s spelt) are two managers off the top of my head who I’d say are better than the names being branded on here. Both more successful too.

What a fecking monumentally stupid waste of time that would be. Well done, Woodward. :houllier:
I’ve clearly got under your skin.

Cutting out the rest of it to make it seem like I’m saying something different isn’t the way. Try actually using your brain
