Why are some of you happy that we have lost tonight?

1. Some cope with disappointment this way, we’ve won nothing for ages and perhaps it’s easier for some fans to swallow another early cup exit by pretending they didn’t care at all
2. Some genuinely don’t rate domestic cup competitions, which I could very well understand in Fergie times, but now find quite peculiar considering our drought
3. Some are convinced the club is managed poorly and will go nowhere with Ole in charge, hence they believe every loss gets us closer to a change and another manager (We’ve seen that under Jose and LvG too)

Spot on.

I'm disappointed we're out especially to a Moyes team.

It's all well and good saying who cares about the league Cup but when we won it in 06 it was a catalyst for bigger things not to mention we haven't won anything for over 4 years.

No Utd fan should be happy with that.

We're usually losing cup games in the later rounds. As @cyberman said our record under Ole in the cups has been good. We just seem to fall short in the semi finals and final.

It would've been nice to win a cup but I'm not getting too worked up about it. I thought we played well enough to win considering the starting 11 we put out there and we were clearly denied a stonewall penalty.
But it is a cup. There is no second place in it. You have winner and that is it.
But nvm that. I repeat; it is not a problem to lose in cup game. Especially in LC. But when it becomes a standard then it is a problem.
We are without trophy 4 years now. We are not in position to pick major and minor trophies. You do that when you are regulary winning stuff.

And to OP; who is happy? I don't understand at who are you aiming there. Some of us are angry as hell and some don't care. Nobody is happy for sure here.

I wouldn't have minded us crashing out if we were genuine contenders for the PL/CL. But considering this and the FA cup are our most realistic shots at silverware this season. the loss has left a sour taste for me.

I am not happy about it but the fact is we didn't cough up the registration fee to get Wycombe but as per usual got a top 6 PL team as our first opponent and so a loss was always possible here. We had to rotate the team and let us not kid ourselves, Ole would have been slaughtered for going full strength in this competition. West Ham got a slightly lucky break which lead to an early goal and we didn't get the decisions or the bounce of the ball after that despite being the better side. It happens and I am not going to lose my mind over it, the squad will benefit from a few less midweek games this side of Christmas and maybe that will make the difference to a top of the table clash in November which if we end up edging the PL title could be critical. I know it is a rationalisation but you have to look at the complete season and if we win any other trophy I doubt any of us will even remember this game come May.

I’m not happy we lost today, but this defeat won’t be that hard to get over.

4. Some (in fact, many) have never and will never care about this particular competition. It’s always been a nothing trophy. There’s a reason Fergie and Wenger only ever played the kids.

It's a shame as you'd have hoped this competition would provide a few more chances for our youngsters against the weaker sides
If we actually were matched against a weak side, but it would have been Spurs, Liverpool, Chelsea and City in the road, considering Ole's luck

The thing that annoys me is not giving Mejbri a chance. But I don't rate our squad players very highly, I don't rate Ole as someone who gets the best out of his team, so not all that bothered or surprised.

Said it elsewhere, but I'd far prefer seeing a United side start to play like a big team again than I would want a domestic cup (or a Europa cup). That's what has been missing for close to a decade.

Secured the group stage of what?

We got dumped out the league Cup at home to league 1 Coventry in 07/08, we must of been really shit that year........

That team won it in 06. They used that league cup as a catalyst having not won anything for a few years. Look how it spurred them on to want more success.

I think under Fergie a league cup loss was generally more tolerable because there was always the sense that something better was within reach later on in the season.

As these have not won anything as a player or a coach group yet, then the league cup should be on the list as a starter. You get the taste for winning as a squad and you go from there. That's what they should be aiming to do.

Yeah I don’t really care either. I am a bit fecking annoyed about us failing to ever get a single good result under Ole without playing our strongest possible XI. As in, not once. That’s a hell of a concerning trend. And bothers me way more than getting knocked out of this poxy cup.
Wolves away in the PL. Lots of times in the Europa 2 seasons ago. And the carling cup last year.

Its not that people are happy, people just don't care.

The league cup is an entirely dead tournament. Virtually every single team at every tier fields a brand new XI and you don't get one jot of credit for winning it. In fact, winning it and claiming some kind of credit is often seen as cheap and a bit desperate.

Yeah this. Only reason I’m even remotely bothered is that it was West Ham. Couldn’t care less about the League Cup.

I'd say indifferent. We saw some questionable players have good performances and we don't have to worry about a competition that is really little more than a distraction for us.
Distraction from what exactly?

Being happy about it is daft.

But it's realistic to think that United aren't good enough to compete on all fronts. Tonight highlighted, again, that beyond 14 players the rest of the squad lacks both talent and effort.

The club has to focus on trying to win the league. It's the only things that matters this season.

This is not first time people acted this way, last 2-3 years winning things stopped being important in here. Which is funny because when JM got a sack, every time when someone mentioned replacement names like MP etc. people went in arms asking what have they won, how we need a winner and so on.

Pretence of heart break after an early league cup exit is never convincing. Nobody wants to lose and it would have been good to have a run at the competition but it’s not the FA Cup

That sentiment feels 20 years out of touch. In fact, it helps explain why Wenger and Arsenal lost their place.

I’m gutted we lost.

But they really should just scrap this competition. Or just let Championship and below play in it. Virtually every premier league team is fielding a weakened side.

No one is happy with loss, just people saying it to feel better. "No one cares about LC", you keep saying it and you might believe yourself, thus feel little bit better.

I'd say indifferent. We saw some questionable players have good performances and we don't have to worry about a competition that is really little more than a distraction for us.

But if the manager doesn't have the conviction to win the premier League or the champions League then surely he has to be sacked ?

These are the types of scenarios that people use to critique someone like Poch (for not winning anything) but then regard as merit for Ole. As far as I can see Solskjaer hasn't won anything as a United manager, elimination from cup competitions does this aid this objective of winning or contradict it ? That's the question people need to be asking themselves. As it stands Ole is piling more pressure on himself. If the minimum deliverable is the premier league or the UCL does he have enough in his management capabilities to pull through.

There's enough squad depth for United to challenge every competition.

I think it’s incredibly short-sighted to be indifferent to an early exit in a competition that could’ve given many of our squaddies and kids vital playing time.
Our squad is enormous and we’re going to have a bunch of players sitting round twiddling thumbs without competitions like this.

Not really. It was never going to give our kids any playing time. That's a total pipe dream.

The ones who will miss out the most from going out are Lingard, Martial, Henderson, Matic, Mata and Bailly. i.e. the deadweight. All given new contracts recently that they shouldn't have been (or in Lingard's case offered). More fool us now they all have one less competition to play in and we can't claw back a tiny bit of value from them.

Guys, we lost a game. It is the league cup. It’s nothing to get worked up about. I think everyone would have liked to win, but when we did not, I for one must confess that it makes me "happy" for our long run. I am just not bothered that much. Progressing in this cup will also just be an distraction.

I have hopes for this season and that’s maybe naive. I don’t care, we can do it.
I just don't get this attitude. The same comment gets made about the FA Cup, and the Europa League.

These aren't distractions to our season. These are our season. They're the cup competitions we're competing in and should be trying to win.

In the 21st century it's just a growing attitude that teams season is just the league campaign, and the cups are just unnecessary distractions. The only exception being the CL for those teams competing in it.

I don't go along with that. A season is about the cups as well as the league. And winning trophies should be the priority. I remember when Wenger was rightly slated / mocked for 'celebrating' a top 4 place like it was a trophy. He was ahead of his time. Now that's the standard attitude for most it seems.

Not happy but not that arsed

Usually takes a while to get over a loss

Those squad players had it in them to do something about it and they failed

I'm not sure who is regarding getting out of a cup as a merit for a manager. Anyway for me at least, Carabao cup is something I want United to win but I'm not too bothered if we don't. Its not a cup I would judge our season on, ever. If at the end of season, if its not an improvement from the last season and we don't challenge for the title, I'd question Ole's position. A Carabao cup would have no effect in that judgement.
