Why did we buy Fred?

I was writing of Lindelof too early so I refuse to write off Fred until he has had over a season at the club.

Make sure we don't let him away on a free or else Spurs will sign him for £10m one season as their marquee signing

Maybe Mourinho saw him as yet another player he could downgrade at a rapid rate of knots.

Be patient and give him a run of games ffs! I think he's talented and he'll do it at United. Some here write off even Dalot. It's crazy.

The guy has barely played any football for United. The people writing him off never wanted him in the first place- or had some doubts before he got here. Is the impression I get.
Anyone already calling for his selling or writing him off didn't do so based on the football we've seen this season.

I seriously don't know what is he doing on training that Ole does not give him minutes, surely after the Pereira disaster against Burnley he should get a chance. I hope he can prove me wrong, but until now he seems one of our worst signings.

His partner has recently had a baby... I mean there can be many reasons for his omission under Ole so far, none of which to do with his footballing ability...

Let's see what happens between now and the rest of the season shall we? He's barely played for us so far so talk of calling him one of our worst signings is just folly.

I like to give players two seasons before considering them a bust. Hopefully he gets some games in this season and shows some promise because if not I'd be worried if we don't make another midfield signing in the summer.

He terrorised city in champions league game for shaktar so he shouldn't be too bad ! New culture ..big club .new team mates ...on top of that not playing many games might be the reason here !! Once he get a run of games we can see what he is made of and then we can decide

Is it in Lancashire water ? Everyone comes here and make their wives pregnant ...Martial...Lukaku..Pogba ..Matic...Fred and couple of office mates transferred from London to Manchester became dads in their first few months over there !

Looks like he's trying too hard sometimes. I think there's a player in there somewhere but he has to stop giving the ball away and getting caught out of position first before he can get a run in the team.

Surely it's Carrick's job to get him up to scratch?

:D Yet, when Pogba does it, no one bats an eye lid.

Yeah, same for me too. I wrote off Lindelof completely last season and this season he is our best CB. It's better to have some patience with players who are from other leagues and takes time to adapt.

I think it would be a massive mistake to sell Fred as I believe he has a huge amount of talent. Ability wise I think he is our second best passer behind Pogba. He is energetic and does seem to have some skill at running with the ball.

The issue is he has come to a new country and league into a team that has had a tumultuous year. On top of that, he has barely played, so it isn't exactly the best set of circumstances to get the best out of him. I think he is trying too hard, which is leading him to losing the ball, and he probably is not being aggressive enough.

I think he is done here, he's barelely played under OGS and now he is not even on the bench against Fulham. I was hoping OGS would give him some minutes in this "easy" game but its clear Ole doesn't rate him at all.

I'd like to think most of the reason he isn't playing is because we were so far behind the five teams above, that we really don't have the luxury to experiment much in this second half of the season and that it's best possible XI every game to try and finish in the Champions League slots.

I am not optimistic.

Spending 50 million on a 25-year old, who has spent the last 5 years in Ukraine, doesn't sound very smart.

The issue is not that he was in Ukraine, plenty of talented players came from there recently, especially the Brazilians. I dont think he has adapted at all. I would give him next season and then sell him if he hasnt improved/stepped up. Ultimately, it is about stepping up and improving on your previous level. he hasnt so far, plays with anxiety. I watched some games in the CL, and while he wasnt consistently great throughout games, he still was on another level compared to Fred here.

Good ,sensible way of thinking about it, but still, him not being able to get minutes and more recently not even being able to make the bench is a bit worrying.

Not even making the bench is something considering our lack of midfield options. Must be dreadful in training.

Thank God, we have also got rational people on this forum

The difference between Fred and Lindelof; It was easy to see that Lindelof would fit better in a system that did not sit low and defend from crosses. He would always perfom better in a team on the front foot and where the CB would be part of the build up play. With Fred we are still in the dark. Hopefully learning the language and adjusting to the rest of the squad will make him a useful player for the team going forward.
I would like to know why we bought him though, and who made the decision and their reasoning for this.

I'm surprised he's not even getting a chance in this game, not even from the bench, I can't see how he's going to play in the next set of games we have if he can't be trusted in this one.

Think its's clear he's struggled to adapt here. Football, culture, personal life, I think a combination of all of these have had an impact.

From the snippets we've seen it's clear he's not currently at the level required, but this seems to have more to do with his understanding of the British game than anything. If he can adapt and become accustomed, then I think there's a player there. If not, he'll be shipped out next January/following summer.

If he can’t make the bench for Fulham then there has to be some doubts as to his future. Actually, I still don’t get why we bought him.

Don't want to write him off, and I don't think we're that kind of club but somethings got to give. Surely he's too old for loan next season?
