Wimbledon 2013

People have known this for ages. Except the media and brain dead england fans can't leave it alone . You only have to listen to the knuckle dragging fans that phone into talk shows. Listening to them only makes me support him more.
It's not just the 'England' fans. Plenty of other people are having a pop for no reason none to man.

Des Kelly is on Talksport, The Press Pass, he did the original interview with Murray and Tim Henman when the original comment was made as a joke between Murray and Henman. Kelly said it was a harmless remark until a reporter on one of the red tops decided to make a big deal out of it. Henman was kidding Andy about Scotland not qualifying about the world cup. Some reporters need a good slapping they will try to ruin people lives just to get a story.

They did a documentary and denied the stories made by the paper a couple of days before Wimbledon, seriously? I can't believe that, surely not to improve his image? Come on now, you surely don't buy into a documentary so quickly like that because he said so? Of course he isn't going to say that was all true before the biggest tennis tournament of the year. Whether it is 100% true or not, we will never know. But why would quite a few national papers report this sort of thing not only once, but on several occasions on different instances? I congratulate him for his victory; he was the better player and rose to the moment unlike Novak. But I don't think I will ever be able to support him because of his previous actions. Also, he's as British as the queen as I am Superman.

You really are a touch retarded aren't you? The Queen is basically German.

So how does that make the previous statement correct? Review your statement there, rather than coming up with lines that try to offend yet make you look stupid yourself.

Murray won. People are happy about it. Get over it. Enjoy the bitterness over a game of tennis!

When did Murray fail to acknowledge he was British?

I am Scottish and British, but when it comes to sport I am not keen on English teams winning.
Doesn't mean I hate the English, people don't need to take it so serious.
When it comes to individual sport I will support anyone who represents Scotland but have no hate of English sports people.
I don't like Hamilton, had no time for Mansell but quite liked Hunt.
Liked Coe but didn't like Ovett.
The point I am making is its sport and its quite normal for Scottish people to enjoy seeing English teams lose, DOES NOT mean we hate England or English people.
Murrays words were tongue in cheek, people do not have to like him but for god sake lighten up.

And for what its worth I have no time for Alec Salmond and I have met him.

The point I am making is its sport and its quite normal for Scottish people to enjoy seeing English teams lose, DOES NOT mean we hate England or English people.

It does however indicate some form of prejudice/resentment instilled at a young age.

English people generally don't reciprocate those feelings and some people can (perhaps understandably) feel hostility when it happens.

The majority though don't really care and will support a Brit regardless. Dunno where this "British if he wins, Scottish if he doesn't" myth has come from though, outside of people telling jokes, I haven't really come across this sentiment ever.

And that is where you appear much more pathetic than me by far. I never said I am disappointed by his loss, nor do I wish him to lose at every opportunity, nor do I disregard other people for him as I don't. All I said was he played extremely well, that he deserved it yet I do not support him for previous claims. So don't come across as a pathetic person trying to one up someone by coming up with elitist comments like these just now because i have a different opinion to you.

Well done Murray. He's finally won Wimbledon.

But still, Djokovic, straight set defeat?!! I did not expect that at all. A world number one should not lose a final in straight sets at his supposed peak age and fitness. And it's not even the French where he generally isn't as good. Huge blow for Djokovic, this.

One thing you can say in his defence is that the semi final took a hell of a lot out of him.

Murray is going to end up being knighted isn't he.
Should he be, though? I mean we talk about players like Giggs being knighted in football. But Murray has just two grand slams right now. I would have thought knighthood would be considered if he won 5 or 6 at least.

He's just become the first male Brit to win Wimbledon in 77 years, course he's gonna get knighted. Also a dead cert for the personality of the year as well.

Nadal played a 5 hour match against Verdasco at the Aussie open before going on to beat Roger. That is not a valid excuse imo, he just was poor.

Murray didnt have the easiest of semis either. That went to 4 sets too.

Either way Djokovic is at his peak fitness and is possibly the fittest of the top players. Some of his decision making was really poor on the big points and his serve has to be better. He looked way too easy to break. Murray was great but Djokovic was hugely disappointing.

Nowadays people fall over the themselves to hand out knighthoods. They want to be seen as in tune with public mood. Never used to be this way, hard to believe it but Bobby Moore was never knighted.

Not sure he will go on to dominate. But he will be certainly in contention in every slam for years.

I look forward to more matches with Murray and Djok
I hope not. It's very robotic tennis for me with both players waiting for the other to blink. I hope we see some new players with more attacking styles coming in. Either that, or I'll settle for a 32 year old federer magically hitting his peak again

Wimbledon matters a ridiculous amount more to the British media and public. They'd have traded 5 US open wins for one Wimbledon.

I kind of get were you are coming from , I see it more as a sporting rivalry which often goes on with bordering countries.

Djokovic was up a break in both of the second and third sets. He was up a break against nadal in the final set of semis of the French. The number 1 in the world can't keep making a habit out of not being able to close out sets.

I know. I'm not British and even I think it's a much bigger and better tournament that the others. But still, I think it has to be less frivolous than two grand slams. Maybe the British public disagree. I guess it's their word that matters.

The overall influence he'll have though cannot be underestimated. This is going to inspire many kids to go on and try out tennis and Murray will undoubtedly be viewed as a national hero for what he's now done. Arguably, he should have to wait a while longer till the end of his career but what he has done is massive considering tennis is a sport that generally been dominated by a select group of top players; a select group he is now in.

I supported Chris Hoy in the Olympics and I supported Murray today because I'm British. Most people aren't retards.

It's not the British public that decides, unfortunately.

Media influence is definitely a factor in the decision making nowadays, though.

If you watch the documentary on him that was on the BBC recently, it showed that all of this Brit/Scot stuff was basically made up by the papers to cause trouble. I just think you need to lighten up and support him. He's as British as the Queen.

But she's German.

He's not in that select group though. He's not dominated the sport.

If the British public see him in that light then he should get it i guess. But I see those who are proposed for knighthood like Giggs and scholes as greats of the sport. Murray right now isn't s great of the game. He has one more grandslam than del Potro. I feel he has a long way to go for such honours but as I said, it's not my opinion that matters in this case.

I think it'd be a bit silly while he's still playing, but they haven't waited for people to retire in other sports.

Oh feck off. You've been a whining tosser. Congratulations, you're the first poster I've ever put on ignore.

It's not just the British public, it's generally perceived as the most prestigious Grand Slam tournament of all.

He hasn't dominated but he's undoubtedly part of a dominant group now, and he's very likely to win more. It should arguably be held off for a year or two but it's easy to forget how long it had been without a British GS winner until Murray came along. Even if he were to retire with only 2, which is unlikely now, he'd still get one anyway because winning tennis GS's is not easy and he will have a massive influence on the British game.

Murray is by far the best male British player since Perry in the 1930's. If you are comparing with football, then several of the best British players of the last 80 years, like Charlton or Matthews, were knighted. They didn't have to be as good as Maradona or Pele to get it. Wiggins and his tour de France win is a better point of comparison than Giggs or Scholes. It seems likely Murray will get his gong eventually, even if he doesn't win many more majors. Today's win changes his status with the British public forever.

It's not just the British public, it's generally perceived as the most prestigious Grand Slam tournament of all.

Would it be fair to compare it to the Masters in Golf? Among it's peers, but above it. Or is it not quite at that level?

I was always waiting for either Nadal or Federer to complete a Grand Slam (inc non calendar). Not going to happen now.
