Iceland’s 23-man squad:

Goalkeepers: Hannes Þór Halldórsson (Randers), Rúnar Alex Rúnarsson (Nordsjælland), Frederik Schram (Roskilde).

Defenders: Ari Freyr Skúlason (Lokeren), Hörður B. Magnússon (Bristol City), Ragnar Sigurðsson (Rostov), Kári Árnason (Aberdeen), Hólmar Örn Eyjólfsson (Levski Sofia), Sverrir Ingi Ingason (Rostov), Birkir Már Sævarsson (Valur), Samúel Kári Friðjónsson (Valerenga).

Midfielders: Gylfi Þór Sigurðsson (Everton), Aron Einar Gunnarsson (Cardiff City), Emil Hallfreðsson (Udinese), Birkir Bjarnason (Aston Villa), Jóhann Berg Guðmundsson (Burnley), Ólafur Ingi Skúlason (Karabukspor), Arnór Ingvi Traustason (Malmö), Rúrik Gíslason (Sandhausen).

Forwards: Alfreð Finnbogason (Augsburg), Björn Bergmann Sigurðarson (Rostov), Jón Daði Böðvarsson (Reading), Albert Guðmundsson (PSV).
When you actually see that squad there and the teams many of them play for shows how amazing they did at Euro 2016 and then to win a very tough qualifying group.

A few went to decent clubs after euro 2016 and struggled. Think Sigborsson who scored the winner v England has been injured ever since. Bjarni's done alright for us this season, struggled first six months but since January has played well and chipped in with goals. We've tended to play him as a DM, that's not his position for national team is it?

Birkir Bjarnason? He usually playes as left winger for Iceland.

He made a mistake against Real when he played on the left - but that is very untypically for him. He is very good with the ball and with build up play - when Lahm played defensive midfielder he was always starter with Guardiola - and is very good defensively - what I think is wise when you have Marcelo on the other side. I would love if he would get called for the World Cup. He had a call for the friendlies last summer. He is the absolute team player - not just on the pitch - a very valuable piece of the dressing room at Bayern.
Tite will name the players next monday and Rafinha most probably will be Dani Alves replacement because theres not many options anyway. In fact i think he will be starter in the World Cup because apparently the coach doesnt trust in Danilo.

Goalkeepers: Bartosz Bialkowski (Ipswich Town, England), Lukasz Fabianski (Swansea City, Wales), Lukasz Skorupski (Roma, Italy), Wojciech Szczesny (Juventus, Italy);

Defenders: Jan Bednarek (Southampton, England), Bartosz Bereszynski (Sampdoria, Italy), Thiago Cionek (SPAL, Italy), Kamil Glik (Monaco, France), Artur Jedrzejczyk (Legia Warsaw), Marcin Kaminski (Stuttgart, Germany), Tomasz Kedziora (Dynamo Kyiv, Ukraine), Michal Pazdan (Legia Warsaw), Lukasz Piszczek (Borussia Dortmund, Germany);

Forwards: Dawid Kownacki (Sampdoria, Italy), Robert Lewandowski (Bayern Munich, Germany), Arkadiusz Milik (Napoli, Italy), Krzysztof Piatek (Cracovia), Lukasz Teodorczyk (Anderlecht, Belgium), Kamil Wilczek (Brondby, Denmark).
Bolded are pretty much bound to go, 19 spots. Hopefully Jędrzejczyk, Skorupski, Pazdan and Teodorczyk feck off though. Peszko, Kurzawa, Kownacki, Mączyński, Góralski all could go, hope Kownacki, Kurzawa and Góralski go, not sure Mączyński can recover from injury in time, Peszko is a fecking clown but Lewy's friend so he'll go on that basis I'm afraid. I guess 1-2 spots will be a tosscoin between Żurkowski, Szymański, Kądzior and Piątek. Also fingers crossed it's Białkowski and not Skorupski as the third GK, although it matters very little.

Should have taken Solia and Shatat but I have no problem with the rest. Our lineup will be the usual :

Hadary
Fathy - Hegazi - Gabr - Shafy
Tarek - Nenny
Salah - Said - Trezeguet
Marwan
Great feeling. I'm for once starting to feel people are starting to recognize that we have football played here in Egypt. :D

Not sure if people have seen this, but Transfermarkt.com has a thing where you can pick your own squad. Any team in the competition, and the options are ridiculous - you could pick Rob Green for England GK (if for some reason you hate England)

Probably something like this:

Pickford
Stones - Jones - Maguire
Walker - Dier - Henderson - Rose
Alli - Kane - Sterling

If I was choosing it would be something like this:

Pickford
Walker - Smalling - Jones - Rose
Sterling - Dier - Drinkwater - Young
Kane - Vardy

England will get ripped apart trying to play the possession game against the big boys so why not play a bit pragmatic and give yourself a fair chance?

A 3-4-3 can be pretty pragmatic to be fair. Personally I think it's the formation that gets the best out of the players England have; utilises your flying fullbacks and compensates for the fact that you don't really have proper wingers.

Whats the point of these provisional squads. 23 is the only amount you take
Some coaches like to take more players to training camps etc. so they can assess their form and fitness themselves.

Some names like Tison, Renato Augusto and Fagner played under Tite at club level. They are not the best in their positions but the coach trust them. I would call Fabinho, Rafinha, Arthur and Luan(Gremio) and at least one target man like William Jose.

Taison has not business there. I would of given that spot to either Willian Jose, Giuliano or Arthur but other than that no big surprises

Dont know if you saw the interview but everybody was asking why Tison and Tite said he can play in the middle and in the wing if Coutinho goes to the middle..in other words: with Coutinho in the middle we can see Tison taking his place as winger, instead of Douglas Costa or Willian..

That Argentina squad looks way too top heavy. Midfield, defence and keepers look average.

With such a strong forward line I think they can mask weaknesses, but not enough to win it.

Is that the same Geromel who was a mediocre midtable CB for Cologne? Must have improved a lot since returning to Brazil!?

I’m almost a 100% certain Taison will see very little or zero playing time in this tournament.
