Reminds me of the time that we lost Ronaldo and replaced him with Valencia (that left people underwhelmed).

Except this time, Weghorst is probably a more effective player than present day Ronaldo!

Think he’ll do a good job. Expect him to score some headers, work hard for the team and cause defences problems. Interesting option to bring off the bench if a goal is required. Will also give Martial and Rashford a break in the cup ties.

Probably not a big difference between what Lyon want for 5 months of Dembele vs what Besiktas and Burnley want for 5 months of Weghorst. Barca probably wants an extra few mil for Memphis though, would be my guess.
It depends really. Wouldn't it be wiser for Lyon to sell Dembele in the January transfer window? Is Depay or Dembele happy to come to United for just 5 months were the chances are that he'll be stuck on the bench for most of the time? Football has a very short memory. Last year Ronaldo was scoring goals left, right and centre and now he's in Saudi Arabia. Would Depay/Dembele take the risk?

Weghorst's situation is different. He's already in a semi shit league so there's nothing to lose for him. Actually this is his ticket back to the big boy's league at a club that is playing good football and have a striker that is, well, injury prone. I see Weghorst's gamble as similar to that of Ronnie Johnsen who moved from Besiktas to United quite late in his career (late 20s if I remember well). Depay and Dembele has more to lose.

Wasn’t he loaned due to not wanting to play in the championship, and the fact he’s a striking legend? A new devil is arriving.
Not at all, it was to not hamper his chances of making the World Cup squad. Was written into the agreement with Burnley if they were to get relegated after he signed in January.

A 30 year old striker who was loaned to a Turkish side because he wasn't good enough for Burnley.. Doesnt sound too great.
No it sounds awful when you put it like that, but you're looking over a few key things.

Pretty sure if they could have him back they would. As another poster said, he would have had clauses in his contract in the event they went down, to avoid playing in the Championship

You don't really think a Dutch International striker would be unwanted by Burnley surely?

I'm not anti Scottish, I just wanted Moyes out.
You're terribly misinformed. His transfer to Burnley was a hail mary to try to keep them up. His condition for joining was an escape clause so he could play top flight football and not miss the world cup.
Says? He made no impact for Burnley in his 6 months, and was loaned to a Turkish side, not back to Bundesliga, not to a Spanish side, how come no other Premier league team wanted him?

Whitwell's article in the athletic confirms that.

Perfect squad player imo. Completely different to what we have. Gives us a plan B target man. Has proven he can score goals in the right set up. Hard worker with right mentality. as RR pointed out, he is the type of player that is looking to take an upward step in his career and will apply himself accordingly. Confident in his own ability. An age that doesn’t demand a starting position so won’t upset the dressing room. Cheap.

all in all, good option as long as we intend adding a real top quality goal scorer in the summer.

Anything more than a loan for 6 months would be underwhelming

It's funny to see people say he'll be a backup or a plan B. Weghorst will have the tragic Mr Martial warming the bench in absolutely no time. He brings qualities we've missed desperately for a long time besides that stretch towards the end of 20/21 where Cavani was fit.

I agree and echo your concerns, but EtH seems like a man on a mission, and no Ronaldo is gone he has the whole club dancing to his tune. It’s a slim chance, but this could become a special season.
Yes but one or two injuries will escalate/contribute to more soft tissue injuries come February/March.

For the past decade, we’ve been buying players that excite fans on marquee name alone, and then turned to total disappointment when we saw they weren’t the right fit for the club, the squad or the style of play.

So I welcome this approach of obtaining unfashionable, obscure names who don’t excite, but are perfect for the team. ETH was after Arnautovic who was a very similar profile player (tall target man who can link up play and hold the ball up), so this is not necessarily some panic buy. We’ve been after a player like this since ETH stepped through the door.

Stats courtesy of The Atheltic:

He's pretty flexible in terms of his overall contribution. But he looks like someone who will disrupt opposition buildup and then contribute in terms of assist and linkup play.
Taller version of Cavani but maybe not as good a finisher.

Hopefully we can sign him today. Preferably him on the bench tomorrow.

Ah 20/21 end of season Cavani. One of the best runs from a United striker we've seen since RVP

He'd be our Dzeko, decent player who works hard and chips in with a few goals, if it's a cheap option then sure.

He will be the striker we buy in summer. We've seen it all before. You can save this post or whatever to come back but its a guarantee.

If his loan is a success we might very well buy him. I mean why wouldn't we if the price is fair. But I can't imagine he would be our only striker purchase in the summer. A top top striker is essential.

So he didn’t want to play in the championship which is what I said?
Given LVG was gonna drop Timber from the national squad if he didn’t play that much for us, I’d say it was well worth Weghorst having that clause in his contract given Burnley we’re almost certainly gonna struggle to stay in the Prem. It was likely his last chance of playing at the World Cup.

He very well may become A striker we buy, but it would be insane if he’s the only one. We need at least 2 additions to that position for next season

I know that there are 3 parties involved but bloody hell, we can't do even a loan transfer quick and swift. Always some delay with us.

The more I read/watch about Wout, the more I'm warming to him as an option. He's clearly going to bring something different to the table. I'm excited to see his link up play which we haven't been great at recently. He could really unleash Rashford/Antony.

Very relevant from our POV.

Antony's xG per 90 is the same here so far as it was at Ajax but his xA has fallen off a cliff (0.24/0.29 at Ajax to 0.06 here). And you can see why when you look at how many balls he's actually putting into the box. From averaging 1.04 crosses and 4.39 passes into the penalty area last season in the Dutch league to 0.00 crosses and 0.70 passes into the penalty area in the PL (according to Fbref).

To me that screams someone who no longer has that physical presence in the box to create for and is having to adjust to a team who lack a presence in the box.
I don't agree with this, it's not like we have Peter Dinklage in the box. Casemiro and Eriksen have still put great crosses into the box, Antony is just shite at crossing as his attempts don't even reach anywhere close to the target.

I doubt Weghort joining will change that, Casemiro, Eriksen and Bruno are likely to feast though.
