I think this is the type of player who uses United to up his value, but ends up going to a Wolverhampton type club. Like Talisca who was 'going to join us' and went to China, or Gaitan who was a lock to come to EPL but went on loan in Argentina instead. Just agents doing their work..

Then how did he mistakenly end up at Barcelona?

Not really. Its a snapshot of what's happening today. We added Fred (1 upgrade). Shitty who ended up with a looping 19 points ahead of us had also added 1 upgrade (Mahrez) which suggest that they kept the distance from us. Liverpool on the other hand had added 4 top players which will further boost their rather young side. So its not silly to think that they end up bridging that wafer thin 6 points gap between us.

That's a rather simplified way to see it. For example Valencia and Young who already shown signs of wear and tear will be one year older. Martial on the other hand had already publically stated that he wants to leave which suggest he's poorly motivated for next season. At that point I wonder how long it will take before Pogba and DDG realises that they are playing with the new Tottenham (ie a team who constantly aim for top 4 without winning anything) and move to greener pastures. That's a normal thing for top quality players to do.

Squads are like a house build on a cliff near the sea. They need constant restoration else they degenerate quickly. Once it degenerated it need more than standard restoration to keep it in place.
City's position was a once in a generation result. There's no guarantee that they will be able to repeat it, or Mahrez's addition means that they will be able to improve on it, or that Liverpool's acquisitions will translate in a better points finish either.

Your second paragraph, apart from the bit about Valencia and Young is wildly hyperbolic and full of hypotheticals and ifs and buts.
If you can find evidence of Martial stating that he wants to leave the club then I will happily agree with you.

Until then - as I said before - I don't try and make sense out of made up situations.

Well that was only one season and no they weren’t, as we finished well below them ;)
I mean, when talking about City who have the most resources I would tend to think their only real rival is the league winner. Because anything short of that is failure for them. I guess for Spurs, City would have been seen as their rivals when like you say they finished above more than once. But for City I think Leicester and Chelsea are the teams who, at least in the seasons they won the league, felt like rivals.

SAF used to say one thing. The EPL table doesn't lie and he's right. Mahrez might fail but there again so can Fred. Actually there's a bigger chance of some player from the Ukrainian league to fail in the EPL then someone who had been consistently good in it for years.

Regarding Young/Valencia you're being very optimistic. Last year they showed signs of wear and tear and next year they are a year older. Mou himself had said that he's not surprised that Valencia got injured because of ageing.

Finally Martial's intentions had been confirmed by his agent. I hope he's wrong though.

It makes no sense to buy him. We need to improve our transition on the ball and therefore need a player who can pass the ball from the back and yet defend and is good in the air, Mina seems to be lacking the former compared to two other targets we are being linked with.

Jose's tactics in big games ensures that we don't conceded more than a goal in big games at most two, so rather we improve on our football on the ball from the back and our transition as well than just our Defensive solidarity.

I never said the table lies, I said that the chances of City repeating their performance is unlikely - which based on past trends of other exceptional seasons (treble winners, invincibles etc), is a pretty safe bet.
And you're right - Fred could prove to be a failure - that's another hypothetical which i'm not gonna sit here and write a novel about because there's no point. None of us truly know anything, we're just typing away.

I was agreeing with you about Young & Valencia btw because you actually used facts not hypotheticals, I said before the fullback is more of a pressing concern than CB (imo) especially LB.

What Martial's agent says or does doesn't necessarily signify Martial's intent and it certainly doesn't mean that Martial won't be motivated for next season. It could just as easily mean that he wanted the club to be put on notice that he wants to be acknowledged with a bigger role this season, it could be a contract negotiation trick, he could want to leave but he could actually be more motivated to play well in order to attract the best clubs.
You see how easy & non-sensical it is to rely on ifs & buts to form your opinions.

All you'll do is work yourself up in a frenzy built on baseless claims & rumours.

Just went on twitter to see what the chat was about this story and the first thing I see is Mina getting wrecked by our old boy Januzaj.

Not saying he's brilliant (I honestly have no idea regarding his ability) but using that clip to criticise him is a bit cheap. All centre-backs fall over and have gaffes from time to time.

Just to inject some positivity, this Twitter thread on Mina was interesting (read all posts). I hope this guy is speaking the truth, if we do end up signing Mina.

Fine. I'll admit it. I don't think Mina would be good enough for United. I've been wrong before - particularly about Lukaku - so I'm willing to admit it's not a forgone conclusion but I really don't rate Mina at all. United should be going for experience over youth and Mina doesn't seem to be as good as our current defenders.

Having just read the thread, the same guy also seems unsure about his ability to slot straight in at United, which is exactly why so many of us are bemused by the potential transfer.

I would quite like to see how a partnership between Mina and Bailey could develop if we are sticking to a back 4. When I saw him at the WC I instantly thought wow this is the kind of CB we've been searching for since Vidic as he was a complete animal but I know how dangerous it can be to buy a player after a good International tournament. Having said that if we can get a potentially great CB for £30M that is peanuts in todays market. I would think it would be worth the risk whilst we still have Smalling and Jones at the club.

I still think Toby is the man United really want.

Mina is a way of putting pressure on Spurs to sell imo

So you were making fun of your friend for signing a donkey based on 1 game and a World Cup where he was one of the most outstanding defenders?
Calm down pal, that Levante match was before the World Cup, and it was banter, he looked shocking in that match. And my friend was lauding him as even better than Umtiti when they signed him, which to me was ridiculous.

Nice spot. For those who are super against him, do look through his feed where he posted his views on Mina before he joined Barca.

Doubt spurs want to sell Alderwierald do close to the close of the window now. They won't find a replacement. We are getting Mina.

What's positive about that? He says he's unsure if he's good enough to slot straight in to the first team, which is exactly why people are saying it's a pointless transfer. We need someone who is significantly better than what we already have and who can make an instant impact.

He said he is unsure, not the great gasps of disappointment that some fans have been showing when they see we are linked with him. His concerns are also about dealing with "pressures to be perfect", not to do with his ability. Look at his appraisal of Mina before he joined Barca.

I think its safe to say that they have a better side and that they just signed a safer bet then we did. Meanwhile our weaknesses are still there and hasn't been tackled at all (RW, Fbs). Also if Martial doesn't think the same way his agent does then he would probably sack him.

Still think he's a smokescreen for Toby, think we are still trying to drive the price down at Spurs. I do believe we have made contact with Mina but would have wrapped it up easily by now, nothing is standing in our way to do a relatively straight forward deal. We are clearly holding out for our first target. Spurs are smart, it feels like who is going to blink first here. Levy always squeezes out every penny and rightly so. I can't see Spurs letting him go for £25m next summer, Levy wouldn't be able to sleep at night knowing he could have got at least £50m. I could be wrong as this has been a poor window for United but Mina makes no sense in my opinion. We need an experienced leader not an unproven gamble.

I think Pochettino will feel Toby isn't vital to his team. He did alright without him for large periods of last season. With the risk of losing him for £25m in a year, I can definitely see Spurs selling.

My prediction is that United will sign him on deadline day for 50m. Spurs can claim they got double what they would have got in 10 months time. And United can claim they have an experienced CB who'll be a regular, for £15m less than what Liverpool paid for a worse CB

I hope this happens. It would be 25m less than Liverpool paid.

Mina- no thanks. Alderweireld- 50+mill for 29yr old -no thanks

Maguire is who we need, but we may not get him. Shambolic leaving it so late.

I reckon woody is looking at the clock in his office counting down the hours, with the cheque book padlocked to his chest ready to be unlocked on deadline day for a mass hysterical scramble with Jim White and James Cooper creaming themselves at Sky Sports also in on the act.
