Fergie's obsession with picking old players in midfield

If Scholes or Giggs come off the subs bench today then it's a disgrace. An absolute disgrace. We should just put some of the academy kids on the bench. Scholes, even with his passing range and ability to dictate tempo as shown vs Sunderland and Liverpool doesn't even have the legs to play 20 minutes against tired teams who are sitting back. Giggs is supposed to be an attacking player but he hasn't scored a league goal for what must be 4 or 5 seasons now. My stomach churns everytime I see their names on the team sheet, even just on the bench. Do they have twitter? We should send them abusive messages so that they retire from football all together, and then in January we can sign proper players.

Honestly, if SAF subs on either Scholes or Giggs today I'm going to rip up my season ticket. Well, I would if I had one, but in reality I'll just close the stream and post angrily on RedCafe. And have a cry-wank.

Giggs has scored in ever premier league season before this one!

They need to seriously think about what's best for the team now. We have been second best in this second half and it's no coincidence.

Giggs and Scholes can still put in a quality 20 minutes shift.

I don't being tough on our older players, but let's not be oblivious to what they still can do, even if it's a pale shadow of what they used to capable of.

Pretty much overrun since Scholes came on.

On today's performance, no they can't.

I love both Scholes & Giggs but it's time for both to retire.

For feck sake Fergie.

Fergie really isn't as 'ruthless' as the media make him out to be. Can't say goodbye to Scholes and Giggs.

If proof was ever needed, regarding the detrimental effect Scholes and Giggs have on our whole play, the two halves of football we've just witnessed should be re-watched. Their slow, immobile movement makes us predictable and their lack of ability to track a man and get back makes us vulnerable at the back.

What a blunder (Rowen's quote).

The second half was shocking and it was down to Scholes and to a lesser extent Giggs giving the ball away at an alarming rate and also not being able to protect the back 4.

We were fantastic in the first half, and all over the place in the 2nd. Bringing on Giggs when we were already struggling to control the game with Scholes in there was just crazy. Luckily some good goalkeeping and luck kept the result safe today.

You have to say both look to be past it... I'm sorry it really looks that way. They still can be pretty good on the ball but feck me they offer nothing off it especially defensively. Money needs to be spent in CM asap.

It wasn't good, but we'll need them for the Christmas period so it's better than calling on them for an important game and them not being ready.

Some sentimal substitutions from SAF because they made absolutely no sense. It's not a problem to play Giggs and Scholes in the second half but to have them completely replace the CM duo of Carrick-Cleverley was a bit dumb

What's everyone crying about? The performance was fine.

The performance was excellent in the first half and parts of the second our attacking play was still good. But once again we caused problems for ourselves by playing Scholes and Giggs. Its questionable whether one of them can play in a two man midfield let alone both and we brought unnecessary pressure upon ourselves in the second half.

Like feck it was.

Both of them had poor games. One is bad enough in a midfield 2, but understandable given the situation. But to put both on with 20+mins to go was a poor call. If he had to rest Carrick and Clev, Fletch should have come on.

Yeah the subs were weird, fair play wanting to rest Carrick or if he had a knock and I could understand Scholes initially as we were dominating but Giggs made no sense, surely if he wanted to rest Clev bring on fletch. Really left us open in the middle and the timing was very odd given Sunderland were getting back in to it.

Yeah till both of them were on the pitch and even then I agree our attacking play was pretty good. But defensively we looked very very vulnerable with both of them not able to track their men.

Hopefully it means that Fergie is really prioritising keeping Carrick and Cleverly fit, and that they are our two definite first choice midfielders.

The fact anyone believes my post was serious shows just what a brainless shithole of a place this forum has become.

This is our only fixture in a period of 14 days.

For feck's sake. Why the feck does he still do this?! Paul Scholes can not play in a two man midfield at this level anymore. How many more times does he have to play there until Fergie finally see's this?! It turns the team to utter shite.

That first half was an absolute joy to watch. Absolutely beautiful. The minute we put a 38 year old in midfield, what a surprise, we look slow paced, disjointed, and generally crap. Its not a coincidence.

I actually feel sorry for Scholes. He doesn't deserve to be used like this. He's earned the right to play in 3 man midfields, where two other players do all the running for him. Its criminal to keep using him like this.

I didn't think that Giggs was that bad but Scholes just can't get about enough anymore. He has also started giving the ball away in dangerous positions a couple of times in nearly every game that we play.

I really think that we need to bring in a midfielder in January because after Carrick and Cleverley no one is up to standard. Anderson is good but so injury prone that he can't be considered.

It became pretty messy. But say what you want, it does not excuse the likes of Smalling, Jones and Young totally switching off in the 2nd half.

Those 3 and some of the rest need to learn that Utd sides in the past dont drop their workrate no matter how comfortable a game becomes.

Not sure why we don't give our promising midfield youngsters (Powell, Lingaard, etc.) some playing time instead of our two oldest players who've got bags of it, but not the legs for it any longer. Strange.

Bloody hell, what a drama. Confirms my suspicions that people enjoy moaning about us more than anything else. We have a great first half, played some great football, yet I was certain that the Valencia thread was going to be bumped at half time with someone having a good old moan.

Each to thier own anyway, you guys carry on.

:wenger:

Is this the knee jerk response we get on here each time Giggs or Scholes plays below average? Giggs wasn't even bad at all - I would say he was probably better than Cleverley in the second half. Cleverley's first half was terrific though.

They will still have an important part to play, but I too think that they should consider retirement after the season. Giggs still has the legs guys - cut that shit out.

No wonder you were certain it was going to be bumped as he was wank as feck.
