I love how weird he is.
LOL.

Rooney looks intrigued and wants to get involved and Welbeck is like naaaaaaah, leave them too it. Giggs looks like the angry father about to tell his kid off! Cleverely has seen enough and is doing a runner, and Evra is just looking back in disgust at this chaos!

He looks good as a DM.

He was rather disappointing in 11/12, against Basel and Liverpool. Shows how far he's progressed in midfield.

Jones was fine in midfield in 11/12, two of his best games were Villa and QPR away from home playing a central midfield role. The Liverpool game is a poor one to bring up because he was playing strangely advanced, the same thing Ferguson did when we played Reading and Villa last season. Just bizarre how advanced he was playing and daft to make any judgements over that, he'll never be an attacking midfielder.

It was actually his centre back performances which were poor in 11/12 and he's had by far the most improvement there. I think it was Basel at home when he was just a complete liability.

He's really kicked on this season. I was starting to worry that he wasn't progressing, but fair play to him. He's one of the first names on the team sheet atm.

He's only going to benefit from playing in the CM I believe, he's tremendous in both positions but he'll learn some tricks that work in the midfield that he'll be able to transfer the ball from CB through CM in no time really. Plus his tactical awareness will increase.

Comfortable on the ball today and passed well in tight spaces. His previous CM outings, although good, were mostly defensive-wise with individual instructions. That's his first accomplished performance as a CM.

by far the best player on the pitch today. A rock in midfield. As usual...

This kid is just too good to be a CB.

That's exactly what I've been thinking for a long time. I'd go as far as saying that he'd be wasted as a CB, as controversial as it may sound.

He's not good enough on the ball to be a proper midfielder though IMO. He's good at running with it, for a defender, but if we're looking at him to be a ball winning midfielder, he still has to be more accomplished on the ball and passing it around. Think Javi Martinez, or Fletcher a few years ago. He's not very composed on the ball like a midfielder should be. Long term I definitely think he'll be a class defender, but one capable of filling in as a defensive midfielder when we need it.

I'm starting to agree with this, his passing has generally improved this season. The rest of his game in midfield is generally spot on, if he can become a more decent passer then really CB would limit him.

Hard to see us buying more than one midfielder this summer, with Jones, Fellaini, Cleverley, Carrick, and probably Powell and Giggs in the mix.

Unsure about that, it's not that black and white to be honest.
At Jones' age Fletch was playing a very limited role in the team, more comparable to how Cleverley plays now than how Jones plays. He was acting at Keane's legs and working in the area between Keane and Scholes playing a very simple game of pass and move. Always looking to both cover Keane, give him an option and move the ball forward.

It's why Van Nistelrooy wasn't best pleased, we went from having Beckham supplying him from the right, to having Fletcher Keane and Scholes as something like a 3 man midfield while Ronaldo and Rooney would carry the ball in centrally from wider positions.

It was obvious it wasn't quite right and there wasn't the distribution from deep that Rooney and Ronaldo needed and Van Nistelrooy sitting on the shoulder of the last man was killing the space Rooney an Ronaldo needed to counter attack. Cue Carrick being bought to play alongside Scholes and everything seemed to click.

I actually like it when we play Jones in the CB position just as much(if not more) as I like it when he plays in the CM position. It forces us to press higher, which I think we've been really bad at ever since Moyes took over.

We were shit at pressing even with Sir Alex in his last seasons, I don't get how Moyes has suddenly been the blame for this when people were complaining about it well before he came here.

We had a pretty much non-existent pressing game under Fergie in recent years - we were also terrible at dealing with quick pressing from the opposition.

Yep.

What I did notice though, that occasionally in the Stoke match we had 3 at the back when the midfielders had pushed higher up. Or Jones would slot into Evans Position with Smalling when he carried the ball. It was really quite interesting and whenever he play in CM I would like to see more of that versatility being used which means we won't be caught out when the full backs (specifically Evra) bomb forward.
