I'm being snide here but don't you think it's possible that his hot streak for 6 months at Madrid was a freakish combination of a unique set of players in a formation which perfectly suited his abilities, combined with a once in a career run of form?

It's not as though his career up until this point hinted at him being a dominant CM in any league, never mind one as physical as the PL. Take away the protection given by Spanish referees and he was bullied far too easily. Not that he even looked up for the fight tbh. Just seemed like an incredibly soft player. No courage whatsoever.

It's not as though his career up until this point hinted at him being a dominant CM in any league, never mind one as physical as the PL. You can put it on the formation but he was incredible in a well-contested friendly for Argentina vs Germany prior to last season, completely tore them up while playing on the right wing.

I'd think it was a good run of form, kind of a purple patch where all his inconsistencies went out the window for a stretch of time. He's not very different from someone like Nani, who was the kind of player he reminded me of when he played for Benfica. Immensely talented but incredibly challenged at decision making.

Where we seem to disagree is the idea that the positions Di Maria was asked to play are a key factor in his failure. It's chicken and egg really. He started off in his "best" position and I think none of the subsequent shifting around would have happened if he hadn't been such a lightweight in a position/league which has such an emphasis on physicality.

My take on events is that Di Maria never once looked cut out to be a PL central midfielder (which quickly became apparent when he tried to play there) so he had to contribute further forward/out wide or not at all. He was given an opportunity to show he could hack it in those other positions and completely failed to take it. Spinning this as the manager making life unnecesarily hard for him is missing the point IMO. If anything, all those tweaks were done to try and help him.

Hard to disagree with this. He has bags of talent, but he didn't show it after his first month or 6 weeks with us. Whether or not CM or wing is his best position, he has the talent to excel as a winger for us and didn't, for whatever reason. He failed, he flopped, whatever you want to say but he certainly never looked a British record signing. Even at the start of the season when he was playing well, we'd still have expected more. Instead we got less and less. He didn't want to be here, he didn't try and we're better off recouping what we can and reinvesting it in the squad.

I don't think he's been a pussy or such. Truth is somewhere in the middle. I'm incline to agree with what Oliver Kay wrote in The Times that his playing style was incompatible with Lvg's brand of football and the reason why Lvg ditched him.

But there's no excuse for showing lack of effort on the pitch though. And he deserves every abuse he gets for that.

I do agree that in part van gaal did mismanage di maira, but di maria looked mentally destroyed the moment he started losing form then losing his place, he had zero confidence and every time he was on the pitch he was almost the worst one playing, compare him to players like mata and herrera who were dropped all the time but always tried to make an impact and finally managed to force their way into the team.

Di maria is a big talent but he has no fight in him and mentally weak. I don't care if it works out for him at PSG, all i know is that it wasn't working here, dude had no balls.

Blanc has options, there are a few players who will be guaranteed starters and they are Matuidi/Verratti/Motta (if he stays)/Cavani/Ibrahimovic/Di Maria.
