ah Niall! De Gea will be grand. Better him than Navas this season.
I don't share you optimism. His relationship with LVG may be completely broken down. Although he will know he needs to get his shit together and play football otherwise it will be massively damaging to his career if he's in the stands for a year. Whether he'll be as good as recent seasons and not drop regular clangers is a big concern for me.

Has this ever happened before? A player forcing through a move that ultimately fell through at the 11th hour and then came back and played (well) for the club he wanted to leave?

I can't criticise you, so I won't.

It would have been a solution wouldn't it? As of now, we have no solution and have a bigger problem than we had before (Romero in goal, DDG suffering mental anguish and unfit to play)
Even I am not criticizing you. When I (or others) think De Gea is not a 15M player regardless of being in his last year and you feel that 15M is a good amount for what he is worth, then there is nothing left to discuss.

And if De Gea was so desperate not to be here, he would have handed in a transfer request.

For 12 months. He's not played this season as of yet, his head is in Madrid. You think he can perform at United for 12 months before he fecks off to Spain on a free transfer?

The De Gea situation is a massive feck up for the club. Starting with not tying him down with a contract sooner to not selling him when the writing was on the wall about 3 months ago.
DDG did not want to sign a contract, they tried he turned it out down

You're right about it being a cluster feck. You say you don't care whose fault it is but seem very keen to point the finger at United (a recurring theme for you, since Fergie retired)

I think Woody's overseen a number of transfer market farces and have very little faith in him but this situation really put him in an impossible situation. The player was adamant he wanted to leave and play for Madrid, yet they didn't make a bid until the final 24 hours of the transfer window. We can't sign a replacement until we're sure De Gea is going and we can't be sure he's going until we receive a bid we feel is fair. Then Madrid finally take their thumb out their arse, come to us with a proposal, which we accept and they somehow manage to feck up the paperwork at their end. Incredible. Even their arse-licking publication of choice, Marca, is blaming them for what's happened.

So yes, it's a cluster feck but - for once - this is something you can't be critical of United about.
I am keen to point the finger at Utd since Fergie has left and not trying to hide it. The club has totally changed in that short time and done a lot of things I have been unhappy with. I think Woodward is a total disaster.

And I do think Utd should have signed a number one keeper way earlier. When it l looked certain that DDG was off before the end of last season, I can dig up posts if you like from me saying we should be on the phone to Chelsea ASAP to get Cech. No dithering or haggling, just get in a number one right away.

I wanted DDG to stay esp with our GK situation as it is atm but that was on the condition he was willing and ready to play, after last nights events i'm not sure he will be up to it now. So the best situation for us is that the transfer goes through and we get Navas plus the cash. Going by reports this looks like it is Madrid's fault, why did they dither until the last day of the window? wake up Dave if they really wanted you that badly they would have stumped up the cash a month ago.

Sid Lowe seems to hinting that some deliberate sabotage went on here. Did Madrid decide to lead us on, then deliberately screw up the deal so we get nothing and he signs next summer for them? If the stories about MAdrid not attempting to register him are correct, this would be one explanation.
Surely not. That's lunacy. Just pay the fecking money, they're not exactly skint. Both clubs were playing brinkmanship and neither wanted to blink first. They then left it so late they both got shafted.

Poll added on the homepage for who is to blame - let's settle this once and for all :)

What a cluster feck on all sides this is. This leaves us in a terrible position. De Gea's head is proper screwed now, how can he come back to play for us this season? If he does, can we trust him to be at his best?

Navas would have been a decent replacement but now we're stuck with Romero unless we move on Cillessen right now, but we can't until we get confirmation that the De Gea transfer will go through or not. God knows when that will happen.

Utter shambles
Since LVG decided not to play him at the start of the season I've assumed he wouldn't play for us again. I don't see him playing this season for us, even if he stays.

depends what he's said all summer to real and de gea. sounds to me like we've been open to the move if the right figure was bid, there has been a load of reports stating we'd want a record bid for a keeper if we were to lose him. if we then went back on that we'd alienate de gea even more and put madrid off dealing with us.
True, but if the deal had been concluded we would have a day to buy a proper keeper. I dont consider Navas or Clissen good enough for United and a good fit for this league.

So i would have set a dealine for the deal.

I am not saying he's a 15m player, I am saying 15m would have got it done and avoided the farce that we have now. He isn't going to sign a new contract. Just because we were happy to overpay for RVP in his last year, doesn't mean other teams are. In fact I can't remember ANY other team overpaying for a player in his last year.

This smells a bit off doesn't it?

Madrid hasn't formally asked FIFA to look into the deal. If they were that serious about this wouldn't they have been on the phone first thing in the morning? Its nearly lunchtime on the continent.

Part of me feels like Madrid were never that keen to pay anything for De Gea, and still wouldn't mind just getting a freebie next summer.
I wonder how DDG feels about Madrid now?

I wouldn't rule anything out, it could be a way to "embarrass" us for the way the whole thing has played out. I agree with him that something does not make sense here, I'm just not sure why it has happened this way.

They will compensate De Gea and use smokescreen to blame us and nab him on a free. I knew we weren't the contemptible bastards. Hopefully De Gea sees them for what they are but not sure how bright he is. We should ask him to sign a new contract or just don't play him. Not even in the reserves. Say we'll put in a madrid price of £50 million and say no more about it.

If I was DDG, I'd be fuming.
If RM wanted to sign him that much, they wouldn't have been playing silly buggers this late on and would have got it done and dusted.

aye. that would be the only thing i think we could have done differently, gave them until 1st august to sort it and tell him he'd be staying if nothing had been sorted by then and give him time to sort his head for the start of the season.

That's not an explanation, since not submitting an offer would have had the same result.

I'm choosing to believe we'll have DDG at his best, looking to secure number one spot at the Euros if nothing else (LVG certainly won't bear grudges if he has a world class keeper to help him).
And I'm choosing to believe Martial will turn out to be an amazing signing.

But I always seem to go against the flow of the 'Caf consensus....

Cech wanted to stay in London apparently. People keep ignoring this.

Has nobody ever heard of a file converter, beggars belief that with all the money flying around in football these days and somebody cannot open a document, I wonder how many times that document was clicked on before they called it all in.

A quick google search on 'file converters' and this would have been fixed for 10 euro.

On the flip side what a prank to play, couldn't be more happier that greedy madrid and de gea's recent cosey relationship has been put on ice. The way some posters are reacting on here, is a bit OTT, I like it that we are playing games with Madrid, serves the greedy bully-boys right.
Perez was looking for advice on a reliable freeware but a certain Portuguese fellow took too long to respond to Perez' Viber and Whatsapp calls.

They can get him for free in the summer anyway, so why expend so much energy to do that?

Fair point. I should try to be careful what I post. Gullible folk like yourself might take them a bit too seriously.
Again, I won't criticise the patronising tone you employ so often and has come to characterise you so well.

It's about neither club wanting to lose face over this. United have finally made a stand against Madrid's tactics, and overall, Madrid have lost out the most. This is about more than DDG. I think RM will think twice about pulling this stunt again.

Even when VG said DDG would play if he was still here in September?

It would be a terrible explanation. If their intention was to get him on a free they didn't need to do anything. As in, they could literally do nothing. So why piss off Navas (and, presumably, their fans) with this farce. Even as conspiracy theories go, that's a bad one.

Did Madrid really want De Gea or did they just want to make him think he was wanted? Madrid come out of this looking like they were happy to keep Navas all along, and pick up De Gea next summer for nothing having painted United as the big bad wolf.

Why should we settle for less? when we want to buy players clubs rinse every single penny out of us, funnily enough Madrid & Di Maria is a good example, difference is we showed intent and paid what they asked and got him. Madrid should have paid up, he's easily worth 30m with one year on his contract, for a top 2 in the world keeper it's more than reasonable even with only 1 year left on his contract. Sorry this is all Madrid's fault, they wanted the player they should have paid up.

We were well within our rights to choose to either sell at the price we want, or keep him for another year. That's what a contract is for.

Real were the ones who chose to come to us with a decent offer only at the last minute. That's not our fault. And even then we got the paperwork done on time, but they didn't. If De Gea wants to be objective, he'll have to blame Madrid and Mendes.

Agree that it's a mess though, I would much rather have just turned down all bids.

Selling DDG and getting some cash with his contract nearly expired as well as a decent keeper would have been sweet. Laughing at Madrid though is sweeter
