"Can Manchester United score? They always score"
This isn't Mourinho, the real Mourinho wouldn't allow Rooney to stay on the pitch. We're fecked.

Fergie knew three years ago what no other United or England manager is willing (or is allowed) to accept.
He did the same with Ivanovic last season.Refused to drop him when he was in absolutely diabolical form.

Those expecting him to drop Rooney will be severely disappointed.

I think Mourinho is selfish enough to cut him loose if his form doesn't pick up because then his presence in the team would be an existential threat to his reign. If we don't make drastic changes we don't make top four and if we don't make top four.....

Jose is absolutely to blame here, and it pains me to say it.
We're still all wrong over most of the pitch.

We're struggling at the back, because
a. we lack a world class experienced CB. Smalling isn't that. Neither is Blind, nor will he ever be.
b. we appear to lack any sort of 'plan' to deal with situations. It's as if they've just been left to their own devices. We need some serious work tactically at the back here. We need someone like the above to implement it.

Onto the midfield - still so severely lacking. We all know that. Fellaini simply isn't good enough, that's obvious. This key position should've been addressed.
Carrick is past it and was never really good enough against the best teams - which is what we're aiming for right?
Don't even get me started on Rooney in the AM role. Ok I've started. Not only does he not offer anything most games, he gives the ball away at key moments - just as an attack is getting somewhere. Aside from completely ruining our attack, that means that when the opposition gets the ball we're easily stretched because everyone has pushed up and was getting into position.
Speed, urgency of play, intelligent, creative decisions, accuracy. When you watch better teams play football all these things are evident and key to them breaking apart defences. Rooney offers the opposite of things in a positions where they're needed most. The whole team suffers with this, but Rooney is by far the worst. It's up to Jose to look at this.

Wingers - They aren't wingers. They're strikers, or number 10s. Martial did alright on the left previously, so it's difficult to be too mad about that, but we need a proper winger there and for Martial to become the 2nd choice striker. He might be ready to be first choice when Ibra leaves.
I've stuck up for Depay in the past. I do think he could be good in a team that's playing better. I'm starting to think it's too late and his confidence is shot here.
The right is even more of a joke. Mata - good on his day, but not a winger. Lingard - I like him, again, good on his day. Not first choice material.
Mhki - might be the answer here? Is he a number 10 though? Feck knows.

Strikers - Ibra, Rashford, Martial, Rooney. Two of these are shoehorned elsewhere. I think we're ok here if they're actually used as strikers. Minus Rooney.

I don't expect Jose to have resolved every issue immediately, but imo he needs to look at the above very soon and resolve those that he can for now without the transfer window being open.

Do we know why Mata was dropped from the starting line up after his first three or four games with us? What did he do wrong considering we won all those games.

If there were Mourinho sack watch threads made and subsequently closed, why was that? If this isn't a manager under pressure already then I'm not sure what is. I'm not saying he should be sacked by any stretch but I, like many, think he is under performing as manager. Can we not debate his risk of the sack?

Rooney is the big one, regardless of whether he's the key person to replace or not. He's the big fuss when dropped, he's the one who will cause an almighty backlash when it happens.

If Mourinho deals with Rooney, the rest (of the changes required) will be a piece of piss.

It feels like to me Mourinho has been looking for a reason to drop Mata and Blind.

The full back substitutions were reminiscent of some of the panic-strewn changes Van Gaal would make when under pressure last year.

He subbed off Valencia so that he didn't have to hook Rooney. This is Jose Mourinho for feck sake. If he won't sort this sort of nonsense out, who will?

Jose's ego was hurt after Mata kept proving him wrong. Blind as well was playing quite well and was dropped as if he was one of the reasons United lost against City.

Mourinhos team selections thus far have me really puzzled.
Preseason he said Rooney isnt a midfielder yet shoehorns him in today when Herrera was the obvious choice.
Winger selection for City game is equally as confusing.

We play 4-3-3 for one half and give up on it.
We sit way too deep.
There is no leader on the field and no one to control the tempo. Blind is probably the most suited for this.

My fear is we need to change but always revert back to the same old shite and personnel.
When we try a change and it doesnt work initially we completely give up on it only to persist with the same shite again.

He must change tactics and the personnel involved and take a few dodgy games until we get it right because the standard stufff served up to us is never going to work.

I'd love to see him playing a midfield three of blind Herrera and Pogba for a run of games.

Mourinho is already under pressure there's no doubt about that. Will he turn it around? I'm actually having serious doubts.

At the same it's all well and good the club sacking managers but someone needs to look at the recruitment process for signing players because something is horribly wrong there.

Hopefully after the last 3 matches, if he drops rooney, gives a chance to the Herrera / Mikhi ,Pogba, fellaini midfield for some games then maybe things might improve. Else we are looking at another battle for the 4th.

Going by the standard of play so far I'm revising my expectation to a top 4 finish this season. And even that isnt going to be easy given Liverpool look great and arsenal tend to finish above us.

Very disappointed by what Mourinho has brought to us in an attacking sense (in particular) so far. It's very early days but we look as backward a team as we did last season. No fluidity, no cohesion and a general aimlessness and pointlessness despite the quality on the pitch. As usual relying on individual brilliance to bail us out.

If he doesn't settle on a team and be ruthless in order to win then it's a battle for 4th again and the only trophy we can hope for is one of the cups again. Really shocking stuff since the international break.

He doesn't look like the Mourinho of old, it's like he has lost that spark that made him the best manager around.
I'm seeing this as well. Glad I'm not the only one. Look at his facial expression, I swear there's this sense if contentment about it. Its like he's going through the motions at the moment looking for that spark. Maybe this set of results might be just what the doctor ordered.

Wont write him off just yet, it would be stupid.
When mourinho returned to chelsea in 2013/14 these were his stats in september in the league were-
Pld :6
Won:3
Lost:1
Draw :1
Position :6
They finished 3rd with 82 points, he also started slowly at madrid(drew2 won 3 in 2010-11). I think its simple that he is taking time to find his best team.I am very sure he will get it right and we will have a good season.
My concern is that somehow he prefers a team that is all brawn and little brains. His treatment of henrikh, mata, carrick,Bastian is baffling to say the least. His treatment to Rooney is diabolical. I thought ofg all managers in the world he would drop rooney at first instance. His quote about rooney's long pass being good without pressure was something that made me look forward to a season with rooney as a substitute at maximum. This concerns me the most. I do think this might be his downfall at united if he cant resolve the rooney issue.
Fergie was right about Rooney, had ferguson stayed one more year he would have sold rooney and cemented another number 10 for us and left us perfectly for another manager.

He is like this because he was humbled by Chelsea last season. His arrogant nature almost got Chelsea relegated last season and himself in personal and football related trouble. He just needs to find a balance between not being too arrogant and being humble and he would find a better persona for himself to achieve what he wants at United.

However, at the moment it seem we need the arrogant Mourinho more than we need the humble one.

Thanks for the heads up, I was just thinking about starting a "what gets Jose the sack thread". Don't want to get banned. This is already a pseudo one to be honest. The mods might as well give us one to take our knee jerking to.

Also how does the Rooney Ibra combo make any sense even on paper? You have a top class CF whose one drawback is that he is 34. Surely the sensible to do wouldn't involve playing a 10 behind him who plays as though he's 40? Jose's supposed to be tactically great but this makes no sense whatsoever. Looks like Jose is just expecting great things from names rather than trying to build a great team.

I didn't believe he'd be an immediate short-term fix but I thought he'd at least expedite the process a little bit by having the bollocks to make big calls. I honestly never thought I'd see the day a Mourinho side would accommodate passengers. The one manager you'd expect to come in and be ruthless in his decision making and he winds up persisting with the same shite as the rest of them. It's like being in a nightmare :(

He's 35 but the point still stands. I don't get it.

So far into the season he doesn't seem much of an improvement over Moyes and LvG. He got the signings that he wanted and he got them in early and started off brightly. But the last three games have been dire. Fellaini can't supply the passes from midfield, and there is limited pace and movement when you field Zlatan, Rooney, Pogba in front of him. Building a team around Fellaini and Rooney is a huge mistake.

And then there is City and they are performing really well. The gulf in class between Rooney vs De Bruyne is monumental and it seems that Pep only needed a few weeks to transform City into a great and entertaining side. Mou has an uphill battle to turn things around.

I suspect even Guardiola wouldn't be able to do anything with our squad. Not that he'd even try.

I've been waiting for someone to drop Rooney after poor perfomances for years. It ain't happening.

Jose can be quite stubborn and sticks to loyal players rather than cutting them lose.

Rooney himself sees no problem with his perfomances. His manager doesn't. I expect him to start our next league game. You should too.

The obvious problem is playing 3 very similar players in the middle. (Rooney, Fellaini, and Pogba)

Only one of the 3 should be starting.

We have a lot of talent that can be used in the right way. Square pegs in round holes makes our first XI perform badly, but we have enough balance to win the league as a unit.

Pogba & Rooney shouldn't be playing together, pace should always be on the wings, an actual screener (whether its Blind or Carrick) should always start over Fellaini and we should be in a fluid 433 more often. Its just not happening and Mourinho is a big reason why. We knew what would happen if he continued to start Rooney, or if he insisted on a 4-2-3-1 so this shouldn't be much of a surprise. What is surprising though is our lethargic play, its like we don't press without the ball half as much as the opposition do. I'm shocked Mourinho hasn't addressed this.

He needs to address quite a few key areas in the team now and this means growing a pair in handling certain players. With all that said, I have little doubt he'l get it right.

He really would. And you have a good few players anyway.

De gea
Bailly
Shaw
Pogba
Martial
Rashford
Ibra
Mkih....

Admittedly the others aren't great but you have a nice core. Mourinho should be doing better with what he has. For one why is he still playing Rooney.

My biggest complaint from him is that we seem to lack an identity. We've played 7 official games, and we still can't say what kind of game is he trying to make us play. I don't mind a few bad results, as it's a new manager and all that. But I do mind if he isn't working to improve them.

One thing that Utd fans have always given other teams stick for is how quickly the managers change. Moyes got 9 months (must have felt like a 9 month sentence for you lot), LVG got 2 years and won a cup. I understand that Mourinho was available but with his recent record at Chelsea, the way his teams play football and the questions over his ego and how that would fit in at Utd, I still don't understand why LVG wasn't given the last year of his contract.
LVG had you playing some awful stuff but is it any better now? I know hindsight is a wonderful thing but do you all feel that this is just a blip or is it a continuation of the form that Mourinho had at Chelsea?
Another season of LVG would have been the equivalent of you guys not firing Rodgers last Summer.Everyone and their dog see that it wasn't working and the crowd had completely turned against him.

Jose is simply making his own mistakes but Van Gaal isn't the answer. Things would have gone even worse but this time without any goodwill from the fans and the ability to attract good players.

The press turning on him too at the right moment, some pretty harsh articles on his decision to let De Bruyne leave Chelsea now that he is back and looking like the best player in the league on current form. Everyone senses a weakness when its brewing.
He needs all the bolllockibg he can get.

Maybe it will wake up this poor imitation of Jose Mourinho out of his slumber. Maybe he needs his own version of 'shredding his legacy at every turn''
