If he wants to go then fair enough. Buy Lafont and play Romero until Lafont can take over.

That being said I don't think he will. Love the guy.

I think he'll go this time and, as others have said, it oddly doesn't really bother me this time. He stayed...didn't complain, played bloody well and with a great attitude. If it's his dream....as it is for many foreign players, then cool....go and find out. Also, I'm sure his private life will dictate more forcibly this time. However...I say screw RM for every pound we can.

I would throw in Areola's name into the mix if we end up losing De Gea. 23 year old french goalkeeper who is currently with PSG but was on loan last year at Villareal. He did really well there. He's won the u-20 world cup with France as well. He is currently not having a great time at PSG and making some mistakes, not unlike De Gea's start at United after moving from La Liga.

Some stats from last season:
Obligatory youtube video of some of his saves from last season:

He's obviously not at De Gea's level but I think he is really talented and will be an excellent keeper. He could be a good alternative if the obvious De Gea replacements (Neuer, Lloris, Courtois, Oblak...) are all unavailable.

Well he's now got a hefty contract and whatever release clause there was on it has expired.

But no, we're not having this "he's done so much for us so if Real cough up £xm he can go" crap. If he goes it's for a sum that makes them look stupid.

Real will probably go for the slightly more gettable Courtois or not even bother because they'll have other galacticos to sign in more exciting positions, like Aubameyang.

Not a slight on his talent but this season's been unusual in that I don't think we'd be much off with a lesser keeper. I'd struggle to think of many (any?) really out of this world saves and it's sometimes felt like we need 4 or 5 golden opportunities to score but the opposition just need to be through on goal once. The difference to previous years is huge. Anyone else noticed this?
Yes. Part of me thinks that he's best when he's consistently part of the action - consistently having to make a save. It's as though he gets his eye in more and more. Obviously one of the top goalkeepers around, but this time I'm really not that perturbed about him probably wanting to fulfil a dream, or at least fulfilling an ambition in his private life to pop off to the sunnier climbs of RM. What I think he will miss....is the 'fan-ship' of English football. It's pretty unique in many ways and he's no doubt got very used to it. He's loved here....but a few mistakes over there...and they'll be throwing the bull's head!

What about them?

Someone said "What did people expect him to say" and I answered. If you don't want to leave, saying "I don't want to leave" is the answer.
It really is that simple.

To be honest after watching this video it isn't even a question who is better.

By the way, remember Adler? Was regularly linked to us with the nearing VDS exit, our fan and Germany's number 1 before Neuer. You can go wrong with German keepers.
Don't think that Leno or Ter Stegen, let alone others, are capable of what De Gea produces over the last few years.

There is always Donnarumma, of course, although it's hard to predict his career trajectory at this point.
Although Donnarumma is an extraordinary talent but trying to get a young player like that with the pressure he'll most likely have is not a good move in my opinion - for both parties. Donnarumma would benefit to stay in Italy for a couple of years, since he's still very new.

Well of course Neuer is better but his qualities are unique, no one's near to be as good as him when it comes to his best "features". Honestly, I don't really think there are a lot of good replacements, which is why I'd hope he'll stay. Leno is basically the only GK with the right experience, age, height and strengths that I can think of at the moment. Feel free to name better choices, not that easy. :)

I would almost prefer it if Romero could try to be the no 1 if De Gea leaves since I think he's done a good job when he's got the chance. Real Madrid could probably include Keylor Navas in the deal but would Navas be interested in playing in the PL? De Gea's replacement in Atletico Madrid, Oblak, is good but isn't he a bit too short?

Like I said, hope he De Gea stays, because there aren't that many great ones out there. The same as the type of striker Ibra is - the type Mourinho likes.

It's not simple at all. He probably isn't sure and he's not the only one making a decision (has to think about his family wishes as well). He most likely enjoys playing at the PL but he would probably also one day like to return to Spain and win over there.

Seriously, if they came in for him he'd be crazy not to consider it. Even if it wasn't for the fact that his partner lives there, Madrid are always going to be in the CL and winning trophies. He's waited long enough surely...

Timo Horn from FC Köln (Cologne) is a talented goalkeeper (same age as Areola) from Germany but he's recently been injured so I'm not sure what that'll do to him. He's been seen as one the best new GK:s in Germany I believe.

But I'm not sure if Leno or Horn is better or Areola, not an expert... :smirk:

@RedMaestro: Oblak is between 186 & 189cm (depends on the source). He is a good shotstopper but his aerial ability is not anywhere near EPL standard. I'd personally rate Handanović (of Inter) to be better suited for EPL.

That's what I thought. I always liked Handanovic during his time at Udinese, a really good GK but he's not the right age for this club. But I agree, good enough for the league.

Can't blame him for keeping all options open. He's spent some of his best years with us when we've been in absolute turmoil, while he has been among the best couple of goalies in the world and should have been picking up trophies left and right during those years.

Hopefully Mourinho can convince him that we'll become competitive before long, and get him to commit to a couple of more years before he leaves.

Agree with this and it would be fair to Navas as well. He's 30 now and a few more years, then De Gea could take over after winning everything at this club.

Handanovič flaps at crosses even more than Oblak. I don't think either is particularly suited to the EPL but if I'd have to choose between the two I'd take Oblak.

I don't want to lose De Gea, he's one of the core of young talents we should be building the team on and he's genuinely world class. If it has to happen then hopefully not this summer, we have enough business to do and there's no stand out option to replace him.

Going far in the Europa + finishing top 4 and signing Griezmann would be enough to keep him here i reckon, though im not half as bothered as i was with the prospect of losing him 2 seasons ago.

We all know this will happen eventually.

Hopefully we will cash in on him big-time - and erect a statue of that fax machine outside Old Trafford.

Seriously though, it should be double the previous record for a keeper (Buffon, £32.6m, 2001)

I think he's happy here regardless. The future DDG is probably talking about is when he's 30/31 and spends a good 4/5 years on top in Spain.
I'll go as far to say not even for Madrid.. That's Courtois imo.

Encouraging but practically useless info. DDG head wont be turned when theres a third of a season to go. Hes a professional and proved that during the fax fiasco.

My opinion is he will go. Despite what many have said in here he has saved us games and hia distribution has won us plenty too. He be a huge miss and we better start looking for his replacement.

Hes been the best United keeper weve had.

van der sar and Schmeichel were every bit as good quite frankly.

Even if he goes we are in the position where we will attract more world class talent than we let go.

Under Van Gaal I would've been very worried, but just in one single summer window we signed 3 world class players. Could even get 2-3 this coming summer.

Yeah, that's not how football works now a days. The "I don't want to leave" days are over, especially for foreign players in their mid twenties and especially if you have super agents like Mendes and Raiola.

Didn't they basically come out and say they weren't interested in De Gea or Courtois because they are all happy with Navas? Don't think he's leaving, not anytime soon anyway, they had their opportunity when we had LVG at the helm.

If De Gea left this summer it would be with no hard feelings from me. He has become almost unreplaceable and whilst being regarded one of the worlds best he has been playing for a team that can't even make champions league anymore. Let's not kid ourselves he would already have gone to Real Madrid had it not been for a fax machine and his new contract benefited us as much as him if not more so us. I hope he's here next season but I won't have any ill feeling towards him if he isn't.

I wouldn't worry too much about his neutral response. Players are trained nowadays to be non-committal on their futures.

A player saying they want to stay where they are for many years just weakens their hand at contract negotiations.

Be all coy and unsure and you'll get your club to pay out more through fear of losing you.

I keep saying. Somebody get him pissed at the next end of season awards and bowling ball Rachel Riley right in to him. Job done. Dave retires at United.

Wouldn't make too much of it (like the poster above for instance). Him saying that doesn't mean he won't stay for long nor has he said he will stay forever would I believe him.

I think he'll stay few more years all depending how we'll do results wise.

If he goes when he goes I'm sure we'll have a good replacement lined up.

All I've seen from him this season is a few gaffes from GIFs/videos posted on reddit and such
