Good news. I know this is an unpopular opinion but he's been a good servant for us in the last 2 seasons.

Assuming we need to buy a player who will be happy to stay as a rotational player and capable of putting in decent performance when called upon, we would have to pay that guy at least 50k. On top of that, we would need to pay a fee of 15m or so. If we pay lingard an extra 25k, it comes to about a million a year and 4 mill for 4 years. Surely it would be cheaper to sign lingard to a new contract.
I don't think the decision about a player's wage is driven entirely by the balance sheet outlook and the end of his 4 year contract. Wages are awarded on merit , otherwise you get unhappy players. That's valid for any business but especially football where everything is public.

Dortmund and Spurs, eh? If United had a recruitment policy like those clubs, Caf by now would have melted down to a couple of water molecules.

Have you ever seen a transfer rumour, just one, someone somewhere surely must think Lingard is a good player and is desperate for him to be in their team
Can't remember (at least a semi serious) one about Rashford either. Or Shaw, or Smalling.. Doesn't mean there's no teams that'd take them screaming, especially for free.

Has anyone clarified that it's 80k/week that could be 100k/week depending on appearances and various bonuses? It's not 100k/week every week, fixed.
Sure it said somewhere it was £75k but could rise to £100k depending on CL/EL win. Goodness only knows.

Aren't everyone crying about how United are throwing money away, club is run by clowns etc.?

He is definitely entitled to a new contract based on his performances for us so far. When contacts are discussed the player puts forward his demand. The club makes an analysis of costs and benefits of such a contract and if found acceptable then they grant the contract. Else they don't. He is going to be key in HG quota with Rooney Young and one of Jones/Smalling likely to leave. Getting Another HG player who will remain a rotation player without complaining and still put in decent performance would require more time and money than just give lingard a new contract

That kind of expenditure is not the problem here. I agree he deserves a new contract, but simply not 100k/week. (if true) Yes the club may have made an assessment but nothing guarantees that every decision they make is the correct one.

Good that he got a new contract, I think that he's an okay squad player.

I have no idea why it is 100k/week. We might be the club who pays squad players more than any other club in the world. In addition, I doubt that Lingard would have had in table any offer anywhere near this, but whatever.

So has Fred the red, let's get him on £100k a week! Seriously though he's not done enough to warrant that sort of money.

People need a bit of time to get used to the numbers, that's all. To earn that kind of money isn't what it used to be just a couple of seasons ago. All the post TV deal contract extensions will look this way for a while, there just haven't been that many that were publicsed so far.

We had our fun in the Lallana thread, the party is over now.

Maybe it is more to do with coming off two really inept games from the team and then announcing a bumper contract for a player.

Nonchalantly scoring the winner...
100k a week for Lingard, wow. The idiocy at the club is still ongoing. 60k a weeks is about right for him and I don't see any other club out there who would given him more than that.
100k. Jesus fecking Christ.
Embarassing. Trebled his wages. Has not done anything to warrant that! 100k he doesn't even start every game. Doubt Mane gets anything close to that at LFC.

Terrible precedent being set by the club. Rewarding people for being below average. Only a few players deserve such wages. When you reward them for being average why should we expect their performance to improve.
100K a week for an average squad player? fecking hell. :wenger:
He is not of the standard to be worth these kind of wages.

Shame on us.
The club got rinsed properly.
This. This. This.

That is just crazy from the club, we're literally the softest touch in football.

How the flying feck is this happening under Mourinho's watch!? Just a few days I was literally listening to him bemoaning players being overpaid without it being earned!!!

This stupid, 'made it big time already', fecking Spice Boy culture needs to get the feck out of this great club.

Who the feck is gonna sign Lingard from us!? And why would anyone care if he left?

Harsh, maybe, but cmon, we need to start setting an example immediately.

Players are turning up here and getting a free pay-day, we're doling crazy transfer fees on players who realistically aren't worth half of what we pay, and then sticking others on crazy contracts that they don't deserve and that no-one else would pay them.

I'm so tired of it. Who the feck is okaying these decisions!? Genuine question.

We are paying Jesse fecking Lingard more than Dele Alli gets paid.

More than Mahrez gets paid, and Vardy

Harry Kane is paid only 20k more a week than Jesse Lingard.

Aw, I'm fecking seething, this has really pissed me off. What the feck are we doing!? When will the club sort this type of nonsense out?

I really thought with the hiring of José this type of nonsense would stop, but it's gotten worse!

Again, Jesse Lingard has been handed a better wage than Coutinho or Dele Alli get paid...

It's infuriating.

I am just wondering how many people complaining about this contract would be fine if he was just sold?
Why would anyone be that bothered if Lingard was sold?

I don't mind him, I didn't mind Chris Eagles either, I also didn't care when he left.

You can't pay Lingard more than fecking Coutinho or Dele Alli earn, it's rotten.

You've managed to pick the three worst transfer rumour sources - ask our Arsenal and Chelsea friends on here whether they'd be happy to go "head to head" to fight for his signature this summer, when they've stopped rolling around on the floor in hysterics , I wonder what their answer will be.

As for Rashford he's 19, he's not going anywhere . Despite Lingard's apologists forgetting that he is no longer 19 and is 24.

Judging by all the reactions I'm seeing here and elsewhere I don't think that many people would care. It's not like he is in our best XI or having an amazing season. If he wasn't English and local there would be very little attachment to him at all, he's an average player. Another Richardson/Sharpe.

At least he's contributing for United to be top of the league.. for the most wage bills.

Coutinho is on 150k, and Alli went from Mk Dons for 5m at the time. His next contract will not be under 100k.

His current deal was signed in September 2016

Dele Alli has signed his second Tottenham Hotspur contract in the space of just nine months to commit himself to the club until 2022 with Danny Rose, Kyle Walker and Jan Vertonghen poised to follow suit.

Midfielder Alli only penned a deal worth £25,000-a-week, doubling his original Spurs wage, in January but has now extended that contract by a further year and earned another significant pay rise.

It is understood the 20-year-old’s latest deal is worth around £50,000-a-week, which further underlines his rapid rise from playing League One football with MK Dons last year.

More likely because we hired Moyes for a few months, then LvG, then another manager, each time buying players the next manager didn't want. But yeah, Lingard....
We had far better players in our team than Lingard and didn't win the league for 26 years. We did win a few cups in that time though and as long as we have one or two local lads in the team who cares if we win the league or not. If Jose thinks Lingard is the future type of player we need to progress on to win the league, we're in for a damn long wait, because if this is the standard I'm starting to dread who we might sign in the summer, and off we go again.

Yep, because I meant it literally.

We spend big (wages and transfers) on average players who think they've made it and yet can't get it up against teams like West Brom and Bournemouth.

£30k a week max. He should be happy to play for that
Agreed. No way a squad player should be on £100k per week. Especially for 4 years. Does Jose really see him as a vital player? We need to sign 2-3 players this summer. Chances are they'll be big names. Jesse could be collecting a massive check for warming a seat next season.

Just trust the manager and board to make the right decisions.

Did you watch Sharpe play? He was well above the class of Lingard, who although limited is twice the player Richardson ever was.
