Has Barkley claimed he felt it was a racial slur? If he did then fair enough, but it's pretty disingenuous if someone else is using opportunism to put 2 + 2 together to play the race card on Barkley's behalf.
It's not playing the race card, anyone that knew his heritage, reading the article would find it offensive.

Chelsea (the saviours of football) fan.
According to Talksport his remarks are being investigated as reported to the police as racist by a member of the public.
It was the mayor of Liverpool who reported it to the police.

Liverpool Mayor Joe Anderson told BBC Sport he reported the article to the police for a "racial slur".

Speaking to BBC Sport, Anderson said: "Not only is it racist in a sense that he is of mixed-race descent, equally it's a racial stereotype of Liverpool. It is racist and prehistoric."

This just strikes me as the unfiltered ramblings of a snobby old white man. So yeah, nothing too shocking even more so that it's in the Sun.
Couldn't it just be snobby man? I'm sure you get snobby old black and asian men too.

Hehe white text, no, just text.

If it's on the eve of Hillsborough and it's discriminatory stereotypes towards Scousers, is that considered banter or is it unacceptable? He's obviously trying to be funny by having a dig at Scousers but it just sounds snobbish

Because of the wide jaw and larger nostrils he inheritated from his Nigerian grandfather? It's all a bit uncalled for imo.
How do you know what his grandfather looked like? Or are you categorising all Nigerians as looking the same? Bit uncalled for if you are.

Personally had no idea Barkley was of mixed race. He just looks dopey. I doubt the reporter studied his family history, but who reads the sun anymore?

Not sure who is racist here.
Mckenzie or people who think that it must be, because Nigerians look like gorillas.

I always thought Barkley was unintelligent as a footballer, but not because of his looks.
If it worked like that Scholes wouldn't have been the genius that he was on the pitch.

The rest seems more a contrived attack on the city of Liverpool, than the usual Northern stereotyping by conceited little-Londoners.

Couldn't that be black text too? You know in the interest of balance? ;)

I had no idea Barkley was mixed race(or had any mixed race heritage) before this thread (I similarly had no idea boxer Tony Bellew did either until recently), however if this gets McKenzie sacked that can only be a good thing although I do somewhat doubt his intentions were racist I actually think comparing him to an ape had more to do with the whole "Northern Monkey" slur that get aimed at scally types.

You would give another person the benefit of the doubt. Not this guy...the lowest of the low.

That's my thinking, I'm usually against mob justice or crucifying someone over what could be an honest mistake, but this guy deserves nothing, he's a total tool.

Seeing as nobody has actually said that it's more likely they are saying it's racist because historically these sort of comments have been used as racial slurs.

The £7.50 an hour comment is particularly distasteful. What an absolute cnut.

Had no idea that Barkley had Nigerian lineage btw.

But Gareth Bale has been referred to as a monkey, without any correlation in his family tree, so why make the link in this case?
If you don't make that link, there is no racism in the comment. (Not excusing Mckenzie in any way.)

now, laughing a scousers is something I take very seriously, but this just isn't cricket. How can you print stuff like that?

The reality is that at £60,000 a week and being both thick and single, he is an attractive catch in the Liverpool area, where the only men with similar pay packets are drug dealers and therefore not at nightclubs, as they are often guests of Her Majesty.

‘However, 23-year-old Mr Barkley will have learned a painful lesson. He is too rich and too famous to be spending his time in local hangouts where most of the customers have only just broken through the £7.50-an-hour barrier.’

I don't particularly care for or know a lot about Barkley, but I knew about his Nigerian heritage. Find it hard to believe that this guy or no one involved in the process of this article knew.

It says a lot when the best defence people can come up with for him is that he works for the Sun and they're not exactly known for their thorough investigations.

Good point.
I was unaware, and even if I was I wouldn't have made the link (maybe I'm too much of a hippy), but someone involved in the article must have seen how it could be interpretted that way.

How they were stupid enough to allow the printing of the article. Did nobody realise it might just cause them problems?

Even aside from the racial aspect of it, the article is just downright wrong and offensive. Baffled as to how no one read the article and thought this was okay.

Good job suspending him but what about the people higher up who let the article get printed?

Maybe they thought they were capturing the zeitgeist of blossoming facism. Brexit seems to have given the far right a feeling of legitimacy.
You could be right there. Probably most of the troglodytes who read The Sun were sat there nodding their heads while reading his words of wisdom.

I'm pretty sure they did, and that's part of the reason for publishing it.

A Sun spokesperson said: "Columnists are supposed to have strong opinions that provoke debate among the readers. However their views do not necessarily reflect those of the newspaper."
They're all about the clicks, we're way past (at least 28 years) talking about The Sun having any ethics regarding their "journalism".

People who have never been on the end of racial discrimination that patronisingly try to shrug off any accusation of racism and accuse alleged victims of 'playing the race card' or being overly sensitive are even more grating than outright racists.

Not all racism is overt and I think some people would do well to remember that.
Well said.

As a Liverpool fan I can honestly say that after all the years of getting angry about what certain individuals say that I'm finally over it.

I get up go to work (a job that helps people I'll add) come home put my kid too bed and go too sleep

He gets up goes too work and makes as much effort too annoy people (specifically the people of Liverpool) and others goes home and goes too sleep

I know who sleeps better.

He's quite litteraly waisted his life.

Last thing, as others have said, who the hell goes into a newsagents and thinks..'I know I'll purchase the Sun' ????

If you want News..well that's not happening
If you want scandal..get Hello or other sub celeb mag
If you want young women with their boobs out that's what smart phones were invented for

It defies belief that it still sells. It really does!!!

What a bunch of cry babies.

Those who are trying to twist Mckenzie's comments to be a racial slur are beyond pathetic. Ross Barkley is white and his tiny bit of Nigerian heritage is news to most, it seems. This was just a case of a tabloid journalist comparing a footballer to a gorilla....and for good reason. If you don't want to be compared to gorilla, don't drag your knuckles and walk around with your mouth open like a gormless ape.

Or maybe walk around as you see fit and expect not too be judged on it

Wow..sorry what a crazy concept..behaving as you like in a way that doesn't hurt anyone and expecting too be left alone.
