I'd rather we finally prioritise (after what seems like my entire lifetime of trying) replacing Carrick over any other transfer business. I mean well and truly nail the signing for that position so I don't have to even think about it until fast and furious 100 comes out. If you could give me Verratti for 100m and no one else I'm snapping your hand off and moving on with what we have for next season. This would also mean we keep DDG which is another plus :)

Eric Dier and Blaise Matuidi would be fine and there's been mutterings from quite a few half decent sources about them. Could play 2 defensive type midfielders in tough away games and then replace one of them with Herrera for games that are more open. Who else we sign up front and at the back depends on the market and qualifying for CL next season or not could also play a role. For sure we'll be making attempts for any one or two or the following - Greizmann, Belotti, Mertens, Lukaku, Keane, Gimenez, Aurier etc

Not for me. The position needs to be filled with the worlds best. I don't want even a 1% chance of needing to revisit the position ever again. I have the FEAR. You clearly are happy to rinse and repeat our efforts to date.

I'm amazed at the sheer number of players people think we are going to bring in next summer when realistically 4/5 is about maximum (5 if we lose De Gea)!

INS

GK - Donarumma - Would be my preference ( the last keeper to impress me at such a young age was De Gea himself!)

RB/LB - Semedo/ Mendy (Depends what Mourinho views Darmian as more)

CB - Keane (He's English and at a decent age, I don't think he's first choice but he'd be a very nice addition and defence isn't a concern at the moment)

DM/CM - Not going to lie, don't see an outstandingly obvious choice here but anyone of Fabinho, Bakayoko, Matuidi, Dier etc wouldn't go amiss. I think we'll only sign one though and get Pereira back into the squad.

ST - Griezmann (Though I would love us to go for Lukaku especially given Zlatan's injury)

OUT

De Gea - Madrid bound? £50m+

Rooney - Off for more gametime £12m-15m

Darmian - Back to Italy IMO £8m-12m

I think Young, Fellaini etc have shown enough to warrant a squad place a little longer.

Outs = Rooney - Fellaini (I just don't rate him) - Jones - Carrick - Maybe Darmian.

In's = Move heaven and earth for Antoine Griezmann, has it all in my book and a must sign for United.
Semendo -, he is pure class, has speed, strength and skill.
Lindelof - A solid centre back who would complement Bailly
Varane - Another quality defender who is 23 if we don't go for Lindelof.
Morata -
24 years old forward who RMadrid see as a long term prospect, but if De Gea goes to Madrid you can be sure one if not both players I mentioned would be part of any deal done by both clubs.

Assuming Zlatan doesn't stay, what would peoples thoughts be on signing Jermain Defoe as a squad player.

I think we will sign someone ala Griezmann to play as a second striker just off of Rashford/Martial, but what would people think about bringing Defoe in as a rotation option. At 0-0 with 15/20 mins to go Defoe could be a great impact sub. Creating chances isn't our issue it's finishing them and he's a great finisher.

It's an interesting idea and I can see the logic behind it. He's great in the dressing room too by all accounts, but I don't see him being happy playing second fiddle at this stage in his career.

I think we need a striker, so one of Griezmann, Lukaku or Icardi would be good and relatively realistic given our spending of late. Expensive though.

if real are serious about signing de gea, i reckon we should get at least one of kroos or varane out of the deal. it would be perfect to get both of them as part exchange . unlikely to happen though. if i had to choose one then de gea for kroos plus some money. CM problem and carrick's long term replacement solved then.

Oblak or Donarumma as dave's replacement.

one CB to partner bailly. don't think any of the big name CB are available so maybe lindelof (young, great potential) or maybe even a bid for varane.

Griezmann and Lukaku sounds terrific imo. would prefer kane over lukaku but this one is very unrealistic at this moment of time.

so In - Oblak/Donarumma (40million), Varane/Lindelof (35/40mil), Kross (p/e), Griezmann (80mil), Lukaku (60mil) total -220million +-

Out- Zlatan (unfortunately :(), Rooney (legend but time's up), Jones or Smalling (preferably mike), De Gea (if the offer is right then),

young, darmian still good squad players imo.

Given current rumours, I can see this happening:

IN: Keane, Dier, Bernardo Silva, Griezmann

OUT: Jones, Young, Mata, Rooney, Zlatan (:()

(Edit): obviously Perreira returning will be like a new signing as well.

I think we are going to play a 4-4-2ish setup.

-------------de gea---------
Valencia---bailly---CB--shaw
B. Silva?--herrera--pogba-mkhi
----griezmann---rasher/Martial--

We will most likely get a CM this summer and then griezmann is going to play the same role as in Atletico with rashford or Martial in the Torres role
I like that and I could see it. But if it was the case, I would go for Lacazette or Griezmann and Saul or Lemar, ideally it would be Griezmann and Saul but it's really unlikely to take two Atletico players at the same time.

Ye probably. But I think we have great players already. Would ve great to get Fabinho to cover the midfield and right back but doubt we will get 2 Monaco players either.

But lingaard as backup for griezmann Martial and rashford to change and can cover for mkhitaryan as well on left wing. Fellaini to cover for herrera and maybe poga even though they are very different players. So we probably need a creative box to box midfielder. Darmian to cover for Valencia and TBJ to cover for shaw. Fosu mensah I'm not quite sure what his best position is but Mourinho seem to fancy him at right back. CB position is covered if we offload Jones and get a replacement who can go straight in to starting 11. GK position is covered if de gea stays

Here's Phil Neville's ideal summer transfer window:

So I can see Lloris, Varane, Griezmann, Bale... can't make out the RCM or LB (possibly Mendy?)

EDIT: He also mentioned Rashford instead of Ibra.

Was just thinking that there seems to be an alarming number of exits and potential exits:
Already sold
Depay (LW) - Mhki covers
Schneiderlin (CM)
Schweinsteiger (CM) - Pogba replaced
Too old
Ibra (CF)
Rooney (CF)
Carrick (CM)
Valencia (RB) - not yet but rumours of Semedo, but perhaps need to wait another year
Young (LB/RB/LW/RW) - tried to leave in Jan, presume will leave
Strongly rumoured to leave
De Gea (GK) - should hold him to his contract imo
Darmian (LB/RB) - improved defensively under Mourinho but still useless offensively. But if he leaves as well will leave us weak in depth at full back
Januzaj (RW) - not good enough
Injured
Rojo (CB) - out long enough to need covering
Out of favour with Mourinho
Shaw (LB) - But if Darmian leaves too leaves us with only Blind and CBJ
Smalling (CB)
Jones (CB) - both often injured and not really top class but with Rojo injured and so many leaving we can only afford to sell one of these if at all
Martial (LW/CF) - but already sold Depay and lost Ibra and Rooney, so can't afford to sell him too
Probable Loans
Tuanzebe (CB) - not trusted for first team yet
TFM (CB/RB/CM) - also not trusted yet
CBJ (LB) - unlucky loan with new manager that didnt want him, maybe try another club
Varela (RB) - If Darmian leaves perhaps we should keep him here but really he needs an injury free loan year
Caf wants to sell
Fellaini (CM) - but we already sold two CMs and just signed new contract
Lingard (RW/LW/10) - but already sold Depay and selling Januzaj and have loads to replace

This is an awful lot of churn. Some positions threadbare (CF/CM/FB/GK?). To make this more manageable we need to keep hold of De Gea, one of Smalling/Jones or possibly both at least until Rojo returns, buy a full back that can play both sides, and not sell Fellaini and Lingard.

IN - strongly linked
Fabinho (CM) - replacing Schneiderlin but if Carrick retires too still leaves us lacking depth
James Rodriguez (10) - don't think Griezmann wants to come to rainy Manchester
Belotti (CF) - Lukaku to Chelsea imo and he's the only other Mourinho type CF likely and linked as Mbappe won't move yet imo
Keane (CB) - cheap cover while Rojo injured, in January re-assess options
Mendy (LB) - general strengthening and strongly linked, Monaco seem open to selling too and can play both sides, replacing Darmian
Talisca (CM/AM/SS) - maybe instead of James or in addition too, a lot of links regarding this one and can see it being the cheap punt backup squad option
Pereira (AM/CM/LW/RW) - will return to cover for Martial and Pogba, replacing Depay

While we will try for Griezmann and Mbappe I don't think either want to leave. I must admit that the James signing would be a huge risk and is less than ideal but don't see other strongly linked alternatives to Griezmann other than De Mertens who is about to sign a new contract.

Even with the above I can see us only getting a top 3 finish... but that might be enough to attract bigger stars to us the next Summer.

The people I think that may leave and should come in are as follows:

Out
Rooney
(Does not offer anything at the moment even when we are depleted in attack with Zlatan out)
Ibrahimovic (Out injured and doesn't want to sign a new contract. We can safely say that he'll move on to MLS)
Darmian (Although lately he's been playing a lot but that's because we have no other options in defense)
Januzaj (Like others have mentioned, he's just not good enough. He's not even good enough to excel for Sunderland. I mean yes Sunderland got relegated but he didn't stand out for me like for instance, Pereira did when he played for Granada and even they got relegated)
De Gea (I've been hearing rumors that Mourinho has promised him that he will get his move to Real Madrid next season. I wouldn't mind that at all, he's been our top world class player for around 5 years now and has helped us. Time to grant him his wish)
Shaw (This is really a curious case because just when we thought that Shaw was back after the Chelsea game, he's had yet another injury which makes him unreliable no matter how much talent you have. Remember Hargreaves?)

In
Belotti (Hard rough housing of a striker who scores a lot of goals, seems to be the Mourinho sort of player and there's no one actually challenging to secure his services which makes it easier to get him)
Griezmann (This is a little iffy as well since we would probably need to make Champions League to ensure of his interest. His team crashed to another Real defeat in the Champions League which kinda becoming a repetition which I don't think he's liking it and would probably want a change)
Fabinho (This guy may actually be the missing jigsaw of our midfield. He's calm and composed and he's a good distributor of the ball. I can see him working well with Pogba and Herrera if he just sits back and occasionally comes forward when we are bombarding the opposition)
Lindelof (This guy is one of the only ball playing defenders out there who could actually complement Bailly. He's quick as well which means he and Bailly would protect whichever goal keeper comes in to replace De Gea
Pereira (He will be like a new signing and I'm actually looking forward to him coming back. He's played really well and can't wait for him to play with Pogba or be his backup whenever we need to rotate players.)

Fantasy
Dembele
Mbappe
Paredes

In terms of bigger names, at this point the realistic-looking options are:

Schmeichel
Oblak
Semedo
Mendy
Keane
Lindelof
Dier
Fabinho
James
Bernardo Silva
Griezmann
Belotti

If I were to pick who I think we'll end up getting, i'd say the following:

Schmeichel
Semedo
Keane
Fabinho
Griezmann

It's time to go nuclear on Spurs; their stadium costs have sky rocketed, and I think they'll struggle to qualify for the top 4 next season due to the Wembley factor.

Dier will happen IMO, but breaking the world record for Harry Kane would be a huge statement of intent. Rashford is probably 3/4 years away from being the main man leading the line, and Griezmann functions best as a false 10; a complete striker like Kane, a minimum 20 goals a season man in his early twenties would be the perfect focal point.

This is a complete wildcard and I'm probably going slightly mad/going to get hammered but I reckon Jose might go in for Defoe...genuinely not a wum

Ever since his pre Sunderland presser where he spoke very highly of him and mentioned he could play for a top club, I've had this reoccurring hunch. By no means would he be signed to be a starter and I'm sure we'll be going after some massive names this summer (Griezman et al) but we're planning a 50+ game season next year and currently have few fit strikers and a finishing problem. He could teach young Rashy a thing or two.

Pretty sure he'll be a free agent this summer as Sunderland are going down and he has, according to a quick google, a relegation release clause.

Would be a terrible move on Defoe's part since he's stated he wants to play for England and if he has a season on the bench that would lower his chances.

Would be a terrible move on Defoe's part since he's stated he wants to play for England and if he has a season on the bench that would lower his chances.
Or he'd score a few off the bench for a highly visible club, maybe in the CL or a title/top 4 race, and show he is perfectly suited to for the only England role that makes sense for him, poacher off the bench to come in when a goal is needed, with Kane starting alone up front so Dele Alli and Lallana can focus on attacking from the center of midfield, and a 3rd striker in the squad picked as Kane's real backup who could start and run for an hour, presumably Vardy, a rejuvenated Sturridge at West Ham or wherever the feck he goes or someone like Berahino if they have a proper breakout season. I figure Rashford will be on a wing, fighting with some mediocre winger to be the starter opposite Sterling.

more than specific players, I hope we make good buys and get great value. There are so many areas that need to be filled that I hope money is not wasted on some star signing while the rest are scrubs and/or retirees.

A cheeky bid for Auba from Dortmund could be a wise move. With RM seeming lukewarm on signing him (he has been whoring himself out to them for the better part of three years now) and him seemingly willing to move to City when there were reported talks, could make him a realistic signing for us. It has all gone a bit quiet regarding him the last year but I think he is ready to move on, and Dortmund would probably be willing to deal for £60m.

I heard Rooney's not too sure of returning to Everton, if he doesn't get off to a good start, he's worried the fans will turn on him.

I know this is the Realistic Summer Transfer in/outs, but I have gone full muppet mode:

In
Van Dijk Southampton, left footed, premier experienced.
Mendes Monaco, powerful LB
Tielmans Anderlect, huge potential
Matuidi PSG, Pogba complement/ Carrick cover.
Griezeman Athletico, no brainer
Lukaku Everton, 30 goal a season cert.

Out
Jones, Blind, Fellaini, Mata, Rooney, Zlatan, for the 6 above,
plus Lingaard, Januzaj, Darmian, Wilson, B-Jackson, Varela

In- Griezmann, Silva or James, Willian, Bakayoko or Fabinho if not Matuidi, Mendy and a CB maybe Lindelof. Out- Rooney, januzaj, Bothwick-Jackson, varane. I think fellaini, young, carrick and zlatan will all stay. Probably DDG to leave and if so Oblak to replace him.

If De Gea and Ibra plus Rooney,Carrick,Darmian,Januzaj,Jones,Young,Mata are not going to be here we are gonna need:
Gk: Oblak
Right back: Semedo
Left back: Mendy
Central defence: Varane
DM: Weigl
Right wing: Dembele
Striker: Griezman
Striker: Mourinho likes to have a big physical strike so Lukaku is the obvious choice here.
Of course this would seem unlikely to happen but Mourinho cleared out 3 players on huge salaries already this year plus that if players like Rooney,De Gea and Ibra leave then there will be a lot of money free to make the changes needed. So it will be interesting to see what happens but it´s clear the english clubs have a long way to go to match the best teams in Europe, so is there another option than to make the investments needed to be able to compete?
What game is this? FIFA? FM?

Dendoncker to add a bit of strength to midfield.
Naby Keita to add agility and help fix the disjointed transition from midfield to attack.
Mendy for extra power and menace on the left side.
Belotti take the burden of carrying the attack from Rashford.
