I think LVG destroyed a lot of players confidence and when Ander did play he tried too hard at everything. Jose has done the opposite to a number of players this year. He has admitted that he likes to challenge players and see who is up to the test.
Agreed. I think a lot of players spent their time under LvG almost fighting their own instincts or second guessing themselves. He seemed far too rigid in his tactics, which is fine if you've got the right players, but LvG's transfer plans seemed to be players and then force them to adapt to his philosophy, rather than specifically targeting players that would suit his plans. Herrera was a casualty of this, so when he strayed from the manager's ideals he got dropped. He never gained the full backing of the manager.

Wonder what LVG thought last night of that performance and that Ander got MOTM?

He really didn't buy him. The deal was already in place. He admitted that and said "I was asked about the transfer and said yes". Proof he didn't know what he was doing. Clearly didn't like the player, signed him anyway, played well then froze him out to accommodate other players he didn't know what to do with.

LvG is one of what Jose calls "poets". They are too idealistic. They try to impose their style on everything. As Jose said, it is necessary to be humble. Respect the opponents but make your players seek out their weaknesses.

Ander is that type of player. Give him simple instructions catered to his strengths. Not like LvG who tried to change stylistically the entirety of the players

What i enjoyed about his performance is how he played Zyech out of the game. I am an Ajax season card holder and can say that everything good about Ajax revolves around him. Jose must have seen this and Anders did a perfect job. Lots of comments about how disappointing Ajax played but if we had allowed Zyech moe room it would have been different. Anders did a similar job on Hazard in the Chelsea home game.

I think it's a formality. Probably just wanted to focus on his football. Probably sign it within the next few weeks.
Cheers. Just hope we get it done soon and announce it. He is integral to our midfield.

However, don't think there is any need to be worried at all. He is one of those who really enjoys playing for us.

Yep. Plus, I doubt Barca can give him the wages we can. He'd probably have to take a cut on his current contract and I'm certain we will give him an increase.

The lads not going to go from fan favorite, player of the year, man of the match cup in the cup final at a club he's openly talked about loving to join a Spanish team he doesn't love (Zaragoza nut), having to prove himself as a regular starter all over again on a lower wage.

He has officially become my favorite United player, and at one point I had my doubts that he'd become the player we all wanted him to become. He's our Spanish general in that midfield, I wouldn't have anyone else in his place.

And that's exactly why LVG usually does better with younger players. Because at the young age, they don't have a clearly defined style, so it's easy for him to influence the playing characteristics of the player.
When a player gets older, telling him to change his style is very difficult. And if he is dealing with a Galactico, it's almost impossible...which is what happened with Di Maria. Ribery (when at Bayern) and Rivaldo (at Barca).

I just can't express my love for this man. He's our best midfielder since Scholes. Carrick had that one exceptional season, but really as a luxury specialist, whereas Herrera just does everything, every game. He's also the closest thing you can get in the modern game to a Keane, in that you'd trust him more than any other midfielder in our team both to put in the crucial tackle and to put in the crucial through-ball. And he bleeds redder than red.

During that fallow midfield spell under Fergie where Barca were the going concern and we all wanted a sexy Spanish Xavi for United but just kept getting budget strikers instead, we were tracking him. If only we'd just got off our arses and signed him then rather than waiting two and a half years!

If Barca do come for him at some point, we must keep him. I don't care how. Give him Rooney's paycheque if that's what it takes.

Across the Universe....from Old Trafford.
I observed the Keane similarities some time ago. He has both the qualities of Keane and Scholes really. With Pogba and another solid midfielder with them, we will dominate every team.
Barca and Real may well come for him. But you can see his passion for the club. Mourinho will make him captain and give him stature he deserves.
I'm, not worried. Sign him up for another 5 years.
The team should be built around him.

That was the problem. Lvg expected the players to change for him but he didn't update himself.

You're right. Young players have a clean slate of a mind. It can be moulded, shaped, distorted any way the preacher wants. That's why last season our young players looked better than the seniors. But they were playing a football game of bygone ages.

The thing I like about Mourinho is that he adapts, he evolves and expects his players to do likewise. Sometimes a manager needs to have faith in his players' abilities. Lvg treated them like schoolchildren or sheep who didn't know any better

If this doesn't count as captain material, I don't know what else will. I may be wrong, but wasn't it Herrera who told Mata to make a run for the quick corner against Leicester which led to an easy tap-in for Rashford? This guy has brilliant awareness and also the respect of his team mates since they seem to listen to what he says.
Probably this.

The future is bright for United. Ander Herrera and Paul Pogba are coming into their own.

I have no doubt about it, they will becoming one of Europe's most formidable midfield partnerships.

Herrera looks like one of those players that bloom as they age.

Big fan but I still think he has too many off days. Easily our best midfield option alongside Pogba but needs stiffer competition for his place.

 Noticed it clearly for the first time.

He should get them to do a formation like the cheerleaders next time, seeing how eager they are to follow to his instructions. I mean, it looked like he was telling Mata to lie on the floor and Mata was willing to do it.

Too many off days in a season where he has won our Player of the Year? I would happily let him have a free run out there for another season without any competition as he was one of if not the most consistent player in the squad

Have you not seen the way Herrera has changed his game for the manager this season? Stop acting like LVG is some stylistic architect, the reality is that he is obsessive in his detail to the point of lunacy so older players find it difficult to respect him. Younger players are naive and do not understand the game so they defer to LVG because he is a veteran manager.

LVG was a good manager in his day, but required a very specific set of circumstances to succeed.

Yes, too many off days. This is my opinion.

People must be absolute idiots if they think we need an upgrade on Herrera. This guy is the real deal and it's no surprise that Barca are now keeping an eye on him.
If these were the highlights for a player City were about to buy this place would be in meltdown.

He's one of those players who likes to get his hands dirty. Manager and fans would love him and opposition would hate him.

A proper CDM with Herrera in a double pivot.

Pogba just ahead without the defensive shackles would be a decent midfield imo.

yes,double pivot. I went there.
Are we back in LVG's reign? Why on earth would anyone actively advocate playing with 2 defensive midfielders, not like we have been great going forwards with only one.
LVG has given me ptsd..

I dont think he's suggesting both cms sit at all times and having two deeper midfielders doesn't necessarily mean a defensive line up, see Madrid.
