No he is not better than Bonucci on the ball, come on
I've watched him a few times and he really is. Some of his passing is incredible. My only worry is him and Bailly would be too weak in the air to start togather as CB partners in the PL.

The notion of bailly and lindelof weak in the air is hilarious.
On Lindelof, I can only base on what regular Benfica watchers have said in that he's not the best in the air. Statistically, I believe, that view is backed up as well. Bailly isn't bad in the air, but I'd say it's his weakest attribute. He has a good leap but a weird heading style imo.

Has Jose really ever cocked up a CB signing? I cant think of any
I do think he has signed a lot of average full backs in his time, he went through loads at Chelsea spending like CIty on centre backs. He has had a few average centre backs too: Alex, Boularouz, Tal Ben Haim and Zouma is debatable so far. He has made a lot of good signings too, but lets be honest he has always had a LOT of money to spend in comparison with most other clubs within his league, just like Guardiola. The good thing with Mourinho is he very much knows the type of player he wants to sign for each position regardless of whether you agree with his methods and tactics, his decision making in the transfer market always seems well planned

Actually, having a nice round head means that he'd have the lowest surface area to volume ratio for headers.

For comparison:

Note the more quadratic shape of Keane's head, which adds +2 to heading prowess.

Working:

Bailly is on the weaker side in air for a centerback. I have no clue about Lindeof guy but we definitely need someone who is actually GOOD in air.

Southampton wants too much for Van Dijk otherwise he would be a good fit with Bailly. On the other hand, if we do play a bit of money for Van Dijk and he turn out to be a good player for us, scouse tears would more than make up for additional cost.

That said, who knows, Lindelof might be brilliant for us.

Right this looks like a goer. There's definite interest from our side. So who has seen him regularly?

All the reports have basically said that he'll come here for a medical after playing the last friendly for Sweden. Every Portuguese outlet has reported the same details and fee. I think this is a goer.

Hasn't he had 4 medical and already 'unveiled' about 10 times now?

The English press are bad but the Portuguese press is on another level.

He just signed a new contract and Benfica are notorious for getting high fee's for their players, something seems off for him suddenly signing for United at £30m.

Well, as much as I don't trust Portuguese media I reckon this is our first signing of the summer done.

There's a lot of pros to this signing, his age is good, he's experienced enough, seems good on the ball and the fee is okay as well.

However, some seem worried abotu his aerial prowess which is also Bailly's weakness.

35M EUR seems fine I guess. Still don't think he is potentially world class, but I trust Mourinho when it comes to defenders. He seems to put high value on Lindelof. At least I'll get to (continue to) watch a Swede in the United shirt.

Think he's a Cahill type of signing but better on the ball.

Not followed him this season(watched him last season in Europe) but couple of Portuguese lads around here said he was improving so... Coupled with Mourinho's record when it comes to defenders think it's ok signing.

No outstanding CB's either that are available and prefer him to Keane.

Good signing for 35m.
And what is this nonsense about Bailly being weak in the air :wenger:
He is hot headed and reckless sometimes, but other parts of his game are top-notch.

It's the worst aspect of his game. He's the weakest in the air of all of our current CB's. Lindelof isn't any better. Lack of aerial prowess would be a legitimate concern if they were to form a centre-back partnership.

We've agreed a deal with him a dozen times now so we must be quite interested in him.

He has a weird technique where he jumps over the ball and throws his head downwards. He's got a great leap, but his timing isn't great. Seems to go over the ball and not across it.

He's young. I'm sure he'll learn how to use his leap more effectively. I remember Evra was the same. Outrageous standing leap, but would often not get his head near the ball. Then all of a sudden it clicked, and he became very good at winning those aerial battles.

Agreed.

He'll learn to position himself better as well.

this guy seems very good defender. quick, mobile good in tackles, aerially good and a warrior like Vidic. Passer too. that too with either feet which seems rare. Of course youtube videos are not the be all, but the fact that mourinho, whose last failed CB signing (one that he wanted so dont include djilobodji and all) was boulharouz in 2005 or so, Im fairly confident about this

The most important thing for me is he's most comfortable on the left side. Bailly is 100x better on the right side, neither Smalling/Jones/Bailly look as good when playing LCB. Only Rojo and Blind look their best at that position.

Hopefully Lindelof and Baily can strike up a good partnership until Rojo comes back, then we've got some great options.

Yes Smalling seems to struggle at LCB position, He was good at RCB under LVG. Same was the case with Jones, him and rojo striked a partnership in november and december until he got injured. If Lindelof comes we'll have 3 options for RCB and 3 for LCB

Yep. Jones can do an alright job there but he's more comfortable on the right you can tell. Smalling at LCB is just a train wreck though unfortunately.
