Given that Jose is vry likely to play defensive counter attack, and if Jose plays 4-3-3 our CB partnership of Smalling-Lindelof is worrying.

I would be more confident of us playing 3-5-2 with 3 CB of Blind-Smalling-Lindelof with the one/both of the wingback provide some cover when necessary.

Anyone think Jose might go with 3-5-2 because of this reason ?

    In the house!
    De Gea
    Lindelof--Smalling--Blind
    Valencia--Herrera--Matic--Pogba--Darmian
    Mkhitaryan--Lukaku

    or if 4-3-3

    De Gea
    Valencia--Smalling--Lindelof--Darmian
    Matic
    Herrera--Pogba
    Mkhitaryan--Lukaku--Rashford
I think we'll start with 3-5-2, then change to 4-3-3 at HT. Rashford/Martial on for Blind.

I'm honestly not too fussed about the result in this one, Real are obviously a superior side and there's no shame in losing to them. What I want is to see us be competitive throughout. A match against the best team in the world is a good way of seeing where we are as a team on the eve of the new season, and I would like to see us actually have a go at these guys.

At least Jones is available. He might be injury prone and all but at least, in this occasion, we can rely on him. He's not that much of a waste of salary after all

    I take a different view.

Following our "depression" post-Fergie, while it is not that important, it would definitely help psychologically if we win this, further building the momentum after achieving EFL and EL from last season.

Also, I think serial winner Jose wants this.

Never underestimate winning mentality. Jose also said before early last season that he saw the team was lacking something psychologically, and he was "building that mentality" (something like that).

    Let's win this !!

They spanked Juventus in the final, who are arguably the best in Europe at the 3-5-2 formation. Would much prefer us to use 4 at the back.
Juve was silly. You don't go toe to toe against a pound for pound specialist. You jab and move. You hit and run.

Juve played an open attacking game against Madrid. Within the first 15 minutes, I knew they were toast.

I will be very surprised if Jose plays like that against Madrid. I expect him to make it cagy, defend well and hit on the counter.

Valencia v Marcelo will be a great matchup, as will Lukaku versus any of Real's first choice CBs. This will be his first taste of elite European competition so it'll be a learning curve for him.
He played for Chelsea against Bayern in the same competition. He lost a crucial penalty and that marked the beginning of the end of his Chelsea career. Jose was not exactly impressed with his attitude back then.

Let's hope it will be a different story this time around.

I read they are going to allow drinks breaks, because of the heat. Oranges/bananas too?
Bananas are off the menu. Bad food to be consuming in heat, it's got very little water content. I expect watermelon and pineapple on the menu.

He is a good player, just nervous and bedding in, he will get better with every game. I have Confidence.
Tbf if he was nervous against LA Galaxy and such, I think playing against Ronlado, Benzema, Bale in a final before he's settled in and got confidence is only going to go one way but hey ho.

I know we're likely to play a very defensive formation, but I'd love to see us try a more adventurous side, since it's not likely we'd win anyway. An exciting attack to actually threaten their defence, with a defence shored up by Matic in front.

    De Gea
    Valencia---Smalling---Lindelof---Darmian
    Matic
    Herrera----------Pogba
    Rashford---------Lukaku-----------Martial

Going to this at Old Trafford tonight.

They are showing it on a big screen.

3 course meal and a free bar. Dangerous for a Tuesday night and with work tomorrow,.

If there was a time when we really needed Perisic then its now. Martial is a great talent but he doesn't backtrack that often.

Real are lethal on the flanks. We cant afford them room to work their magic. I suggest we put as many bodies there as possible to disrupt their gameplan and to push them in their own half of pitch. My formation would be a narrow 4-3-2-1 formation with Mkhitaryan and Mata given licence to leave CM and move on the flanks if needed.

    Valencia-----Smalling----Lindelof----Darmian
    ------------------Matic---------------
    Herrera--------------------Pogba------

Personally I would like to see 3-5-2 (more like 3-5-1-1)

Don't think Pogba will play as #10. I think Mkhi/Rashford is very likely to start over Martial.

I wonder why everyone thinks we'll play our strongest team. The game on Sunday will be much more important!

I have a feeling that this will be a high scoring affair. The score predictor only lets me go up to 5 however.

Not a bad team at all. Add Rojo, Bailly and a left wingback and that's a PL contention side.

    Starting XI will be -
    De Gea
    Valencia Smalling Lindelof Darmian
    Fellaini
    Herrera Pogba
    Mkhi Lingard
    Lukaku

We wont score playing 4-3-3, creating very few chances. 2-0 Madrid.

Difficult to see anything other than a comfortable Real win. They are better than us in every department. Hopefully we can keep it tight and nick it somehow.
Not if you do it using the Liverpool calculator...

    De Gea > Navas
    Bailly > Varane
    Lindelof < Ramos
    Valencia > Carvajal
    Darmian < Marcelo
    Matic > Casemiro
    Herrera < Modric
    Pogba > Kroos
    Mkhitaryan > Isco
    Lukaku > Benzema
    Martial < Ronaldo

    We win.

    Oh you jammy sod.
Looking forward to it, my friend has a dry cleaning business and they have a contract with United to clean all their uniforms/shirts etc.

As a thank you they have invited my friend to this event and he can take 4 other people. So there is a group of us 5 mates going with a free meal and bar. Happy days!

If we play like we did against Barca, we'll get creamed hard. Hopefully our players will be ready to put themselves in full competitive mindset for this.

Seeing as we lost the last 2 as CL winners I hope we can win this one, I have faith in Jose for this one. He will probably set a task for Matic and Herrera regarding Kroos and Modric and try stop them playing the way they want to and maybe hit them on a few counters. I feel if he does that they will struggle because them 2 are geniuses on the field for Real.

I'm going 2-1 United. Pogba Mkhitaryan and Ronaldo for them.

What is this? So much United bias.

De Gea is the only player who is definitely better. You can make a case for Lukaku based on Benzema's patchy form last season. The rest are all better, including the clearly overrated Pogba.
