They spanked Juventus in the final, who are arguably the best in Europe at the 3-5-2 formation. Would much prefer us to use 4 at the back.
By merely looking at the "number" of defenders doesn't make much sense.

    It depends on many things
    1. how you play your formation/system. ie 4-3-3 could be defensive/offensive
    2. how fluid is your system. ie ability to interchange player
    3. players' quality
    etc......

And Juve actually played 3-4-1-2/3-4-3 with front 3 of Dybala/Manzdukic/Higuaín.

It's similar, but definitely "not that similar" as Jose's 3-5-2 in many aspects if you look into the details especially like Jose's midfield trio vs Juve's midfield duo (Dybala played more up front than our midfield trio)

Is Bailey also suspended for that Red in the Europa?

Juventus used 4-2-3-1 in the final though.

On August 8 differences are smaller than on May 15 and a trophy is still a trophy, so United may be hungrier if Real allow you play a dull game at your very own dull pace.

Fair points, you get my drift though.

Its a prestige game for both teams: despite current differences, there is plenty of mutual respect so neither side will want to lose and will take the game seriously.

However, its only meaningful for the team who wins as they get a big shiny cup and temporary ego boost; the losing team loses virtually nothing as the game can easily be post rationalised as a pre season warm up losing to another elite global football team.

Basically both teams would love to win but don't care too much if they lose (as long as it's not a spanking).

So this is the 3rd trophy Mourinho has been talking about. A bit presomptuous though, we haven't even played the match yet.

fecks sake  wasn't this after they were 3-1 down and brought Cuadrado on?
I don't know. Think it was 4-2-3-1 with Mandzukic LW, Dani Alves RW, Dybala as the ten and Barzagli RB.

I thought Juventus started as a lopsided 4-2-3-1 more than anything else. Barzagli as RB, Dani Alves as RM with Mandzukic on the other side as an inside forward with the work rate of a midfielder.

Taken from an article on BBC site:
    • Manchester United could claim their second European Super Cup after winning in 1991 when they beat Red Star Belgrade 1-0 at Old Trafford
    • United could become the second English side to claim multiple European Super Cups after three-time winners Liverpool
    • Jose Mourinho has lost his previous two European Super Cup matches as a manager, in 2013 with Chelsea and in 2003 with FC Porto. No manager has ever lost on three occasions
    • Mourinho is the first coach to manage three different sides in the European Super Cup
    • Spanish teams have won seven of the last eight European Super Cups
    • The last Europa League winner to claim the Super Cup was Atletico Madrid in 2012, as they beat Champions League winners Chelsea 4-1
    • Only Barcelona and AC Milan (five) have won the European Super Cup on more occasions than Real (three)
    • Cristiano Ronaldo has scored a record 108 goals in all European competitions, including two in the European Super Cup

Didn't he leave Porto for Chelsea the following season after winning the CL?

Edit: Just checked that he won the EL in that year.

Yes. He said recently in an interview that both the times he lost in super Cup he was the manager of weaker teams Europa league winning team playing against CL winners. He lost Super cup match after porto won the Europa league a year before winning CL he lost that

Gone for 3-1 Madrid. Can't see us having enough at either end really.

Performance aside, we want the trophy more than Real. This should be a positive :p

Real has two fixtures to play against barca on 13th & 16th. They would put more emphasis on that one not saying they would give us a stroll. Ronaldo might play few minutes in 2nd half or might not play entire 90 mins as he is back recently in training. I reckon we might nick this one

I think we have a good chance (unless Madrid play their kids, of course!).

Real are a great team, but have never been one of the great teams I feel hopeless against, like Barcelona with their act together.

We're gona tear them apart lads!

Seriously though I desperately want us to win this one and I think Jose will take it seriously. The lads seem up for it as well so hopefully we can get the win.

Of course Ronaldo travels, it's a perfect time to stoke the Utd rumours.
I guarantee he stages a private conversation with Jose as he did with Larry White

Expecting an extremely negative setup here, similar to Sampdoria game. It won't be a good watch.

Thought this would be helpful for some.

Midweek-Midnight games are back. More excuses to arrive late to work the next day:keano:

I think we are ahead of Real in match fitness and might just sneak it 2-1. I hope so, it might be a tinpot trophy, but I still want us to start the season by winning something.

Matic will be so crucial. Will free up Pogba and also have to help out in defense. Smalling-Lindelof looks mighty shaky on paper.

Nice backhand compliment there. Yeah you're right, we won't get spanked by Madrid like you did. Even the best club side ever (Barca 09-11) didn't thrash us that badly.

Nah, I couldn't care less if you play with flair or on the counter. It is the most legit gameplan you have. We tried too hard to be equal and collapsed, Mourinho would not have been so stupid.

Not too hopeful, think we will really struggle to create chances playing 4-3-3, I expect Madrid to win 2-0, with one of the goals coming from a Ronaldo penalty.

We will be in meltdown on here as we wont appear to have addressed our attacking issues.

Didn't your players self destruct at half time in the dressing room with reports fighting broke out between Bonucci and afew other players?

    --------------De Gea
    Valencia Lindelof Smalling Darmian
    -----------Matic Herrera
    ------Micky Pogba Rashford
    --------------Lukaku

Pray we dont start with Lingard or Fellaini.
Think we will lose though 2 or 3-1 as don't trust that CB partnership. More concerned about West Ham game anyway, I really can't stomach a OT draw to start off the campaign.

We need to keep a close eye on Modric. If we can keep him quiet then we have a chance. Don't fear Ronaldo as much.

Really looking forward to this one. Always enjoy the Super Cup just as the season starts. Both teams will want to win it no doubt. Just look at previous years and how hotly contested the games were. I think we'll nick this one in a very tight game. Baking on Jose pulling tactical masterclass to get one over Zidane. Come on, United!!!!

Put Herrera on him like we did on Hazard and we could be okay. I think it will be a close game. I've gone 2-2 with us winning on pens.
