Strange.

Is there anyone here that can attest to the level of the Chinese league and how he's done there? I'm thinking of Defoe going to the MLS and returning to the PL to score a bucket of goals. Wasn't all that bad.
Not the highest of levels but hes the best player in the league and also great for Brazil. Good signing for Barca, hes underrated from his time at Spurs.

As far as I'm concerned, Tite got him this transfer. When he was recalled, myself and other NT supporters was like wtf but he shut us up with his performances.

In saying that, he moved to Spurs during a WC year and it greatly affected his performance. Now, he has been brought for a lot of money and a fanbase that don't want him and again during a WC year. He risking his shot at the WC with this move.
Yep, this is why I hate WC year transfers for Brazil players. Seems to negatively affect us every WC cycle. Unfortunately we've got quite a few this season- hopefully they all work out.

What on earth are Barcelona doing?

Even ignoring his time at Spurs (where I don't think he was necessarily horrific but not exactly up for it long term either), his style of play is not suited for Barcelona at all. That's if he was good enough, which I don't think he is.

If he still plays for brazil, it should mean he is still a quality player, no?

Bang average player, shouldn't be anywhere near Barcelona yet alone cost almost £40m. Terrible business.

He is a good player for Brazil.

Everyone seems to be judging him on what he did at Spurs. By that logic, Bayern should have never signed Jerome Boateng cause he stunk at City.

He's been more than solid on the International stage for Brazil. It's a decent signing for them. They need a CM and he'll fit in well.
Boateng was a young German international who had been impressing in the Bundesliga since his teens. He wanted to move to back to Germany and Bayern took the pretty risk free option to take him back there. I don't see it as a comparable situation at all. I get the point you're trying to make but that's a poor example.

Conversely Paulinho was a fully fledged international footballer with a-few transfers and over 100 club appearances behind him when he joined Spurs. He started well but things went south for him after that. He then moved to China and has apperntly been good there but it's not much of a benchmark. If you say he's been doing well for Brazil then so be it; I can't comment on that.

However, I think you're trying to be objective for the sake of it. This signing is really indicitave of Barca's demise from their recent dominance. Having just sold Neymar for mental money I'm sure their fans are somewhat pissed off with this signing. I would seriously doubt many Barca fans share your viewpoint on his signing, to be completely honest. To me, it just smacks of madness.

I'm wondering if he has actually lost the plot. There must be a reason but I can't think of it. With wanting to purchase coutinio and signed Paulinio maybe he's trying to copy Tites Brazilian team? He does alright for Brazil. Hat trick Uraguay recently and some nice goals. He must be changing the way Barca play at a fundamental level....or its money laundering.

Surely one of the weirdest career trajectories ever?

Brazil > Lithuania > Poland> Brazil > England > China > Spain
 random.

No chance there isn't some dodgy business involved here. He'll do ok and I don't think the money is that ridiculous in this market but he's evidently worse than Rakitic, probably only slightly better than Sergi Roberto, has much less upside than Andre Gomes and doesn't remotely fit the style of play Barcelona (or Messi) like to play.

He isn't as bad as people think, definitely still good enough to play in Europe but starting for Brazil and playing very well does not mean much as international form and club form are two different things.

Also, the Tite factor. He knows how to use Paulinho.

I'll have to give this Barcelona board some credit and admit they have some cojonazos for daring to make and announce this signing after getting trashed by Real Madrid in the way they did. They either have some cojonazos and are quite shameless about it or are just brain dead.

I've never seen a Transfer as obviously fishy as this one. Not even Bebe. When are the next elections in Barcelona? They should get rid of Bartomeu as soon as possible and they should never let him inside their stadium again. Unbelievable.

They must think that those trio will last more than 5 years, imagine what happens when Messi retires

Real on the other side has been really great at preparing for the future
Yep, Real doesn't even need to buy many players, as they already have some gems like Llorente and Asensio.

We keep getting told the English clubs overpay for players, which they do, but it takes some going to pay 35 million for an ex Spurs reject who went to China. Barcelona are going to do a Spurs in reverse & waste all the Neymar funds like Spurs did with Bales sale.

I would rather have every single one of our midfield options bar McTominay (who's still young) than play Paulinho.

I thought it was some new Brazilian wonderkid, not this bag of crap who didn't do anything at Spurs.

Funny enough there actually is another player named Paulinho in Brazil who's 17 years old and plays for Vasco. There were some talks in Brazil that he's better than Vinicius who Real paid 45m Euros for.
