Barca' squad is turning into a crock of shite aside from two or three standouts. Messi being the obvious one, but even he won't last forever.

Just a strange signing. Had we signed him I'd be very underwhelmed. Had a rival signed him I wouldn't be concerned in the slightest. Maybe he proves me wrong, but Barca's recent transfer dealings give me faith in my projection of the signing.

It's funny to think Barca thought they were going to tap up and sign Verratti, instead they lose a player who's about 30% of their team and easily most valuable future player and are signing a midfielder from the Chinese league and starting an Everton reject against Real Madrid who are just showing off with their bench.

The fee is clearly crazy but assuming he will flop because he did not stand up at Spurs is a bit short sighted. How many times have we seen players fail in one league or a specific team and shine at another. We tend to be overly critical of players we are familiar with week in week out. Paulinho could easily do well for them or at least well enough when you consider the fact that this is a team that has Messi and Suarez in it.

He was pretty terrible at Spurs but I always felt he was a good player just not a good fit at Spurs or the Premiership. He was very highly rated in Brazil at the time.
So a bit like Kléberson? We didn't get to see him play much.

Everyone seems to be judging him on what he did at Spurs. By that logic, Bayern should have never signed Jerome Boateng cause he stunk at City.

He's been more than solid on the International stage for Brazil. It's a decent signing for them. They need a CM and he'll fit in well.
The thing is style wise, he is very foreign to Barcelona's. For that price, he will be starter surely? Can't see he fit anywhere in 3 of the midfielder role Barcelona uses.

Brazil NT style is very different to Barcelona. Neymar was given freedom to roam everywhere while at Barcelona for most of the time, he needs to stay in his position outside before being allowed to do his thing.

Incomparable to Boateng. Boateng was known to be workable in Bundesliga. Bayern took a punt knowing his potential. Paulinho has no top league experience beside the failure at Tottenham , and is hard to judge given his journeyman career with final previous job in China. He may come of age and enter his prime, but there is a chance he needs time to adapt to play in top league in a team with pressure to win. If that's the case, giv n his age it's huge huge gamble.

That's the key difference to Matic kind of transfer, which in itself was a gamble with lesser risk.

If he still plays for brazil, it should mean he is still a quality player, no?
It's hard to say really with Brazil NT. Hulk was there for quite a while and quite numberable people called out him being overrated & one trick pony until he was fully exposed & stopped getting call up. Paulinho maybe the case too.

Is there something dodgy going on behind the scenes with this transfer?
No, they just like having an inho or two in their team :) They're heavily invested in the letter transfer market and have a massive surplus of N, H and O. They need Paulinho and Coutinho to clear the stock.

Funny enough there actually is another player named Paulinho in Brazil who's 17 years old and plays for Vasco. There were some talks in Brazil that he's better than Vinicius who Real paid 45m Euros for.
Maybe Barça got confused, to be honest the transfer policy they have going is abysmal currently.

Agreed.

They've tried to replace what they had with like for like replacements but they simply dont exist. Their inability to change their style of play and transition to something different is what is currently costing them. Its easy to say but the Barca way requires specialist players who dont come around so often.

It's been awful for the good part of a decade.
Back in rivaldos day I always believed they where good but more akin to the current atletico, I guess xavi, Iniesta etc are a rare occurrence like our own class of 92.

they were the 2nd highest spending team in the world back in the late 90s and won 2 La Liga's. How are they like the current atletico?

Strangest transfer I've seen from a Spanish top club since Madrid bought Thomas Gravesen from Everton.

Chygrynskiy to Barca was weird too.

At least Gravesen was cheap and played some decent games, but such an atypical Real player for sure.

Has settled pretty well, a goal last weekend, a goal and assist today, looks pretty lively too. Powerful player and brings something new to the team. Better deal than Gomes, think he got a lot of stick on here for being rubbish, while actually being always good for the Brazil NT. He was average for Spurs, but things like this can happen. He is a good and useful player

Yeah, looks to slot in really nicely. Might be better fit for that midfield than Rakitic. Not just smiling when they do well, but beaming. That type of thing is always nice to see IMV.

Was at the match today. Aside from Messi, Paulinho will likely be their most important player. Especially from their midfield. He brings something no other one of their midfielders do, which is strength and some steel. Smart player too, reads the game well.

They need him to perform if they want to compete on all fronts this season.

I think everyone was going off the face that he was shite for spurs and played in China. He has played well the times I had seen him play for Brazil recently.

Has brought exactly what Barca's been missing in midfield in recent years - power, energy and dynamism (and seemingly goals).

They were never going to get a Xavi replacement and their style has evolved a little bit anyway, away from tiki-taka in recent years, to a bit more direct, anyway.

He's started really well for them.

Of to a perfect start. Think he can be a useful player for Barca and I'm really rooting for him. More than Gomes or Deulofeu.

No matter what I don't think they handled the transfer well.

Never understood the criticism. Has been a beast for Brazil and is the sort of player Barca need post death of tiki taka fancy bollocks.

That midfield can't be replicated. You either move on or fail abysmally as you hold on to a style with subpar executioners.
