This. It's quite fun but hardly anything captivating.
It was pretty revolutionary at the time though as a (sort of) FPS. The cover system and no health bar have basically been used in every big FPS since, for better or worse (mostly worse).

MGS5 is slightly overrated, although I love the game. Doesn't make sense, right?

Well I find the story extremely poorly written. I mean I sank about 200 hours into the bastard to platinum it but I ended up skipping most of the cutscenes expect for Quiet of course.

I don't know. I'm pretty sure GRAW2 had the cover system spot on and it was out half a year before Gears of War.

The story was lame, I agree, but the gameplay and stealth mechanic in this game are excellent. I'll go on and say it has the deepest stealth mechanics I have seen in any video game till now. Even though the missions looked quite repetitive, but I was never bored of them because of the great mechanics and the great AI who keeps learning from there mistake.

This game looks like the opposite of MGS4. Seems Kojima was annoyed of the criticism MGS4 got for the too much cutscenes and decided to build MGSV mostly on the gameplay.

I'll still give it about 8.5 or 9 out of 10 for the gameplay anyway.

Yeah I agree. The weapons, vehicles, soldiers, child soldiers, even shanty towns and compounds in Afghanistan were all rendered beautifully. I really have no faults with the gameplay. Just the story sucked fecking balls. Skull face was literally the worst villain I've ever encountered in a game. Man on Fire went out with a whimper as well. Pretty lame as you said.

I absolutely loved MGS4. Would love to play it again.

Yep I agree about the story being lame. That's why I think Kojima was thinking mostly about the gameplay more than the story while designing this game, because the difference between the greatness of the gameplay and the lame story was obvious.

As the first attempt at a sandbox MGS5 - it was flawless really. Can't fault it at all.

Only thing that sort of got to me was the way S rank was scored. I know it's a game but I thought there was too much speed involved. I mean you should be able to observe the outpost's, FOB's first etc then go in with a clear strategy which should be flexible as it's a sand box. Yet, I felt there was still too much emphasis on time, which in reality is mostly not like that at all. Unless, you're breaking a fecking door down - certainly not in a field. Anyway, small gripe that I found.

I wasn't thinking much about S ranking the missions tbh and tried to take my time in scouting the place and going always stealthy and I think that's gave a much better time for planning and doing the mission as I want, especially the first time you play the mission. I have always finished missions in rank A or B at least, though, with few S ranks here and there.

That's what would have been better. If the devs put more emphasis on reconnaissance rather then how quickly you can get the mission done. Cause that's what S rank is all about - time.

Speaking of which - Shadow of Mordor is overrated as feck imo. Played it for like an hour and I seriously couldn't get one bit into it.

This, Final Fantasy hasn't been good since like 1993 with the first final fantasy on the super nintendo. After that game, they descended into weirder and weirder anime/hentai/waifu/whatever the feck you call it tropes.

How long does it take to make a fair assessment of whether you will like a game, do you reckon?

As in, sometimes it takes a while to get into a game, but after a certain amount of time it clicks and you absolutely love it. But when that happens, do you already have an inkling its a good game, but it goes from good to great?

I have two games I have now walked away from in the last couple of months - Fallout 4 and Elder Scrolls Online.

Pretty sure ESO is not for me, Im just not interested in the social element of it. I played it for a couple of hours last night and Im pretty sure I know its not for me, and Ill steer clear of other online games as well from now on.

But Fallout 4 feels like maybe, if I persevere, I may get into it. I loved Skyrim, I loved Dragons Age Inquisition, I liked Witcher 3. Having said that, Ive played it for probably 5+ hours over a few evenings and find it a real struggle. Is it worth persevering or should I just move on?

If you aren't enjoying it move on. Playing for more than five hours is giving it a fair enough shake, I think.

I think Fallout 4 is shite but I just dislike the Bethesda open world RPG recipe so take that with a pinch of salt. The whole "modders will fix it" attitude is incredibly cynical and now it's even more disgusting, with their paid mod scheme.

yeah I get people find Bethesda shit generally, that is kind of why I feel I should keep going, because I DID love Skyrim. But to be honest they feel very, very different.

@The Bloody-Nine My issue is, if I give up on Fallout 4 - having gone back to it last night after a few months - I have nothing new to play. So then I have to buy a new game.

Maybe I should pop into town and buy a new game.

Anyone got any recommendations? Something along Skyrim / Dragons Age lines? I was looking at Mass Effect Andromeda as a possibility before I went with ESO, might give that a go.

Also, I have never once gone through a game a second time after completing it. Even games Ive loved like all the GTA games over the years. But I will happily watch GoT or Breaking Bad through a second time, or a good film. Maybe I should try Skyrim again? Or get GTA V for the PS4 - does that have any meaningful differences with the PS3 version?

There's quite a lengthy tutorial and it took a couple of hours for me to really get into it. Well worth it, though. Plus if you have a Pro and a 4K TV it looks stunning.
My TV is more than 10 years old but Im sure itll still look good, I have actually seen it at a friend's house. I was slightly put off by the fact she had a bow and arrow. Its a small thing, but I tend to be more of the hack and slash with a sword or axe school of combat. But that is by no means a deciding factor, I have read good things about it and it did look great. So yeah, I may well do that.

You should replay Witcher 3. It's still incredible to play through.

It's not really RPG but XCOM 2 has just had a DLC released called War of the Chosen. It adds a lot to the game which was already great anyway.

@GhastlyHun Out of interest, can you elaborate on what you mean when you suggest Skyrim doesnt have working roleplaying mechanics?

Im actually quite new to this genre, Skyrim was my first. Dragons Age definitely felt a lot closer to the roleplaying games I used to play outside of computer games as a kid, but I still thought Skyrim was excellent. Just curious to understand your criticism of it better.

I'm guessing he's referring to the consistent 'dumbing down' (hi 'lambs :p) of the Elder Scrolls / Fallout games. Skyrim does have working role playing mechanics. Something like Morrowind (Elder Scrolls 3) is much more in depth, though.

Sorry Im being dumb but you are going to have to simplify it even more. Maybe that's apt, you have to dumb down your posts for me, and I like Skyrim, which also dumbs things down.

But I dont really get what you mean by dumbing down. As in the quests arent intellectually taxing enough?
