Would you classify that as anti-Semitism? It's a bit of a reach, he's hardly insulting them.
How is that anti-Semitic? It's overly simplistic, but it's not anti-Semitic as much as it is fact.
Yeah like the others have said, I don't understand how that's anti-Semitic?
It plays into two standard anti semitic stereotypes

.World Jewish conspiracy/Accusations of plotting to control the world

.Stereotype of the penny pinching Jew who only looks after their own.

You could you know just ignore the commotion and like listen to the album and form your own opinion. Also Jay was rapping very well on Watch The Throne so he has been on halfway decent album this decade anyway.
Good point about Watch the Throne. Although you can't just ignore the commotion around a Jay-Z album anymore, not with Tidal in the works now. If it was just a new album and it was readily available on Spotify, Amazon or in HMV then I'd go ahead and check it out - he's a respected figure and there might be a couple of good tracks on there. But with Tidal now in existence and with it charging £10 a month to access this half-decent project, I think the album has to be worth that kind of expenditure.

I gave into Tidal's free trial when the final version of The Life of Pablo finally dropped and it proceeded to charge me £10 a month for three months until I told them I'd cancelled my subscription when my free trial ended. They refunded me, but damn that's not the point - music shouldn't be so fussy or exclusive in the way that Tidal makes it. So I'm not going to spend my time or my money listening to a half-decent project by a rapper who should have called time a decade ago when I could use that time to listen to new music by fresh artists, or just Jay-Z's older, better material.

I hate to put it like this, but Jay-Z's been behind the game for too long to justify the amount of work I'd have to put into listening to one of his new projects.

I'm failing to see how it's offensive towards jews, or at least disappointing on Jay-z's part - he's playing on stereotypes sure.

You realise it will be available on spotify/apple music/physical copy in a week or two max? It's not that big of a deal to get worked up over.
The Tidal exclusivity lasts for a short period of time, similarly when artists on Apple music enjoy a similar exclusive period.

Who said I'm getting worked up? When it appears on Spotify that's probably when I'll listen to it. Then again, the audio version of Lemonade still hasn't turned up on Spotify, so who knows?

Jay Z is just continuing the stereotypes. I'm sure anyone who is jewish has got a lot better things to do and doesn't really give a shit, it's one stupid line in a album but I think it's disappointing as Jay is getting on to be 50 years old and as a fan I don't want the experience of listing to a Jay Z album to be the same as when grandpa comes over for christmas.

In an era where we don't have to download each album 'cuz streaming services have millions available on demand.

You'd hope that fans wouldn't actually mind signing up to a streaming service for an nominal fee, and actually support the artist.
It is shitty that they aren't all under one banner though. What has Tidal even got to offer other a than a few exclusive Beyonce and Jay Z albums?

So to qoute the king. "feck Jay Z".

You wrote a whole an essay basically damning the entire creation of Tidal, when it seemed as though you weren't sure of the purpose of it having an exclusivity period

That's fair enough, I can understand the disappointment. I believe that line comes on a song thats about black empowerment and trying to help black people start more businesses and such. So for me, personally I like the idea behind it, and I think for Jay to be nearly 50, nearly worth a billion, but built it all from scratch with everything stacked against him - I like that he's switching his attention and focus towards empowering those in a similar circumstance to him, or who look up to him. We need more of that.

Why would they all come under one banner? Competition benefits everybody, including the consumer.

Spotify benefits the consumer more than it does the artist, due to royalties, but it was the first service available and has the largest amount of users - plus its the only one with a free tier, so of course it's more attractive.
Tidal offers exclusive content, videos, interviews etc.
Similarly Apple music has it's radio service, recently new tv shows & movies etc
Google Play, Amazon etc all have their own benefits too.

There's nothing wrong with Jay-Z or any artist wanting more control over distribution of their music, especially he wants to get paid fairly for it.

Then again - i'm just not a fan of downloading music illegally, especially if I claim to be a fan of an artist, so maybe i'm biased.

It's 2017 you can get the album in like 2 minutes without going anywhere near Tidal.

I found very little to get excited about on Jay-Z's new album, it wasn't bad, it's just kind of meh. I really don't care much about his personal life either, I really can't identify with a middle-aged man who is incredibly rich and married to someone who is also incredibly rich and successful.
:nervous: thought it was just me; and I'm a fan of his!

I don't want to derail the thread but thought this was a interesting take(Although it's a little too harsh on Jay Z)

Also I have no idea how to use twitter on here.

I was being intentionally facetious because you wrote 2 paragraphs, seemingly under the impression that the album was going to remain on Tidal under exclusivity forever. At least that's how it came across.

Interesting, I guess he does umbrella all Jews to be white business-owning, money pinchers - despite the fact that Judaism isn't a race, but it certainly does have its stereotypical demographic that's often referred to.
I can't comment on whether it's offensive or not - i'm not Jewish, but I do see your point now.

A week or two late, but I hope you've all given Big Fish Theory a listen. Great album.

Gave it a go, cheers mate, a solid album, I liked the production very much.
Happy to bring some Vince Staples into another life. I think the major problem with Big Fish Theory is that the production is so brash and heavy, Staples is occasionally lost under it. Contrasted to something like Yeezus - which is another hip-hop album that is so excessive and brute - Kanye manages to stay in control or on top of the beats vocally. In some ways you'd expect that; Kanye is a master of production and Staples is all but a pup on his sophomore project. Mind, it could be intentional... As if he is drowning. As I've mentioned a few times, I'm a sucker for concisely lengthened albums and I think this works perfectly. Only other issue is the hooks are pretty mediocre.

If you're feeling it, give Summertime '06 a listen too; his debut project. Similar strengths of production being fantastic and fresh-sounding.

There's a documentary on channel 4 at 10pm tomorrow night on the Jay-Z vs Kanye West rivalry. Looks like it might be a good one.

Not really Music related but how do people feel about DJ Akademiks? He's like a one man gossip mill right? Anyone heard of him? I find him irritating but in a weird way also entertaining. I really should have utilized YouTube to help me buy a wraith ffs.

I don't really feel any type of negative or positive way towards him to be honest, he's a fan with flawed views and opinions just like everybody else.
Therefore I don't hold his views higher or lower, and i'll critique or agree where accordingly.

Personality wise I think he has a funny face to look at, he has a quite infectious laugh and he comes across as quite normal.

Pretty much. Gossip sells though.

I don't pay him any mind.

HELLO
Seen J Cole live, really exceeded my expectations for what was an alright album. Some of the songs transfer surprisingly well to a live venue. Would see him again.

J Cole loves an autumn concert in the UK

First 2 times I saw him where successive yearly October/November concerts, and I think he's done another 2/3 around the same time since.

He's an average performer I think, nothing really memorable about him certainly.
