City have been impressive this season but they only defeated Chelsea away, Liverpool was at home and they are yet to meet Tottenham this season.
While I do agree with your points, City haven't played Spurs yet. (Unless you're of course counting the pre-season match?)
 That's right, i swear i remember them beating Spurs in the PL

Oh well

Even City have a couple of games that could be tricky amongst that bunch.
Not really. The first two games are at home. Burnley are in good form but City should still win comfortably. West Brom haven't even drawn against City in the last 2-3 years. Then they have Arsenal at home which could be tricky or a really easy win depending on which Arsenal turns up. Leicester are just not that good anymore so that should be a win too.

Comparing that to our fixtures, Liverpool and Chelsea away are the toughest games we'll play all season. Huddersfield away is not that easy despite Spurs' easy win there. The initial 20 mins before Kane's goal was pretty tight with Huddersfield being the better team. Spurs at home should be a winnable game but Kane has an insane away record so far with 12 goals in 6 games or something. Newcastle home should be our only easy win despite them doing well so far.

City's games look easy on paper but they could still easily drop points. You know the old cliche, no easy games in this league, that's why the PL is the best league in the world yadda yadda yadda.

Yes, I'm aware that our games are harder - I was just pointing out that City's games might not be quite so easy as they first appear. Arsenal could go either way, as you acknowledge, albeit most likely that City will beat them pretty easily. The other 4 games look easy on paper, but none of those teams will show any ambition whatsoever and will just camp in their own half hoping for a point. The chances are they won't be able to keep City out, and once they score one it will probably be game over, however we've already seen City struggle to break teams down a couple of times this season against Everton and Bournemouth. But as you clearly know exactly how the games are going to pan out I assume you'll be placing some massive bets and making a pile of cash?

I think City, on current form, will blow those five away but I agree that there are some tricky ties in there for them.

Thinks will get very interesting if they drop points there but if they get maximum points, then I hope we are not more than three points behind them at the end of those games.

It's now clear how MASSIVE those away to Liverpool and Chelsea wins are for City. To match them, we have to beat Liverpool away at the very least. We cannot afford to go and play for a draw. There will likely be no Mane red card this time around so we absolutely have to grind out the win. This is where Jose must earn his bucks.

If we beat the game raising Liverpool next week then I will be a little more confident of a title tilt.
Have to beat all of our rivals in at least one of the games against them - i'd take 2 draws against City but other than that we have to go for the throat of the rest especially at home.

If we get 6 or more points from the games against Liverpool Spurs and Chelsea then we are looking good

Stoke, Burnley and West Brom should be OK but Arsenal and Leicester always seem to give us grief.

If your team's performance warrants it, you can always get excited. Whether that translates to turning the proverbial corner and competing for the league title, it's only 7 games into the season

Liverpool coming up after the I-break at Anfield will be a good barometer for where United stand. I haven't watched United yet this season but will tune in for this one

I disagree - a draw away at Anfield would be absolutely fine. We don't need to do better than City in like-for-like fixtures, just win more points than them across the season. We've already beaten Everton at home, who they could only draw to. It's a long season and there will be twists and turns. If we can keep beating the teams below us and hold our own against our direct rivals we should be OK.

We are challenging on the PL this year, we will be there and that hasn't happened for 4 years, that we look this sharp and confidence we are afraid to get excited because we were far far from challenging the 4 previous years but the way we started this season if it was in SAF days then we would be so excited and some would reckoned we won the league already, our start this season hasn't happened since 2011 so yes we all should be excited and look forward to a successful season. I'm not waiting to beat Liverpool or not there will be ups and downs but in general we look stronger better and lot more confident.

I think we need to wait until we've played some actual rivals before we can get excited. With Liverpool, Spuds and Chelski coming up soon, we can make a more informed decision after those matches.

I guess we are not as excited as we were. :(

But I am excited with the return of Pogba

Not the best but not the worst just going by results but the football was dire on all 3 occasions and we offered little to nothing in every game.

Excitement well and truly cancelled! :(

I've been saying it on other threads as well but the game that has really hurt me was the huddersfield one. I even mentioned a loss against Chelsea isn't a big deal for me. For United to be back we need to start beating the lesser teams with ease.

Just wait for the Pogba return when the media start bringing up stats about losing no games in the premier league this season when Pogba has featured.

The hype train will quickly get going again. Expect it to get derailed shortly afterwards though... :(

I agree but there'll always be a fluke result during any season. They played us at the best possible time for them.

When we can truly be excited? When we have two midfielders other than Pogba who can hold and move the ball without shit stains. A 10 that can play in between the lines, a RW that’ll stretch the play with pace with the 9 in the box and 10 ready to interplay.

Till then? Only Allah knows.

Edit

For me anyways

That's the most worrying and annoying thing for me. The quality of football increases our chances of getting good results.

The performance against a lesser team is what really hurt me. We didn't look like winning against them at all. To me, that is the worrying bit. Losing to Chelsea, City etc is not a huge deal right now.

We can be truly excited when one of two things happen
  • we start playing, consistently (i.e. spanning at run of at least ten matches), the quality (but not necessarily style) of football that City (or whoever is the best team next season) is currently playing
  • we buy/promote multiple players that are young and super talented

Until that happens, we won't be winning the league and we won't have anything susbstantial on which to rest our hopes.

I still get excited before every game. Probably helps that i was 26 before seeing United win a title but i still live in hope that we will produce an exciting performance despite the run we may be on or team selection. Even in the bad times, i always expect a performance no matter who the opposition or competition. Saying that, i've had a fair few disappointments over the last few years.

Yes , good results naturally follow from good football , and I'm just not seeing any. I'm not even seeing good defending (eg Morata unmarked?). I might get mildy excited if we at least we were trying to play good football , but the manager seems unconcerned about the quality of our passing , movement or creativity.

Arguably City have both of those, which is why a handful of people are probably in meltdown across various threads.

City do have both of these:
  • they obviously play as well as City (that one is fairly obvious)
  • they also have a set of U23s that are, along with Chelsea's, better than those of other clubs (including United)
  • Guardiola seems to favour targeting talented young players rather than ones nearing or at their peak, which is unlike Jose's preference of singing players that can do a job straight away
The first point is understandable given the amount of money Guardiola has spent coupled with the fact that City have suffered no injuries to key players this season as opposed to United having to deal with the loss of Pogba.

The second point is something of a sore spot for me - there is no reason why, other than arrogance and sheer laziness, the biggest club in the world has the quality of their academies overtaken in such a short spell of time by Chelsea and City (who themselves don't even seem in any way likely to even use those academy products in their own first team).

The third point is, again, something that grates me because I rather enjoyed the period 2003-2010 which saw United target exciting young players with an aim to concentrating their raw talents for long term gain.
It was something of which I was proud. Maybe this ethos will return again at some point - I certainly hope so.
It's way more exciting to sign an exciting, young, raw player that has his whole career ahead of him than to sign a more senior player, already in his peak, just because he is currently more polished.

...

On the other hand, City's overall quality and mandate for signing young players will inevitably be flushed down the toilet along with the last shit Pep takes at the Etihad when he leaves.

Ive 2 things to back up my two pence worth.
1. Ive watched United for nearly 50yrs now.
2. Im paid in my job to observe, find patterns in things and sort them out. Put those two things together and im Mystic ferkin Meg! :-)

I can tell you now, were better than we have been in the last 4 yeaes but this is still a false dawn. Call it a semi-false dawn if you like, but we are nowhere near the finished article just yet to compete on a regular basis.

We have the spine of the team to build on now, De Gea, Bailley, Matic, Pogba, Lukaku, but the rest of the squad is like a water filled ballon with a hole in it. You can plug it up with your finger but the minute you do another hole will appear.

We will definitely finish top 4, were good enough to do that, but we wont win anything this year because were not good enough to beat City for the Prem, Real/PSG/Barca for the CL. We might have a cup run but if we met Spurs/Chelsea/City in the final i think we would lose.

Were close, just 2 or 3 better players than we have now in key areas and we'd be good to go. But until we start winning against teams like Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal, City etc we will be what we are, a top 4 team at best but.not winners.

So technically its a false dawn but will happliy eat my own shite sandwich if proved wrong.

Mendy - City's only specialist LB - picked up a season ending injury. That's a significant injury to a key player. Not to mention Kompany who's been out for more or less the whole season so far and Aguero who was out for a few games. City have had injuries, they've just had the depth to manoeuvre around this.

Who would be their backups if De Bruyne and Sane get injured together?

Don't worry you won't be eating that sandwich anytime soon. I agree with your analysis except for the part about the need for 2 or 3 players. I think we require a left back, right back, right winger and CM/AM at a minimum. Even 4 additional players would still leave us behind Man City and the best in Europe. In an ideal world we would have a clear out of the squad and remove about 8 players and bring in 6 or 7 quality players then we could go toe to toe with the big boys domestically and in Europe. To challenge the big boys I would think we would need to bring in Laporte, Ghoulam, Fabinho, Jorginho, Fekir/Savic and Leon Bailey or players of similar quality. Players like Darmain, Mika, Shaw, Blind, Carrick, Smalling, Lingard, Mata can't be part of our squad going forward if we hope to challenge for titles.
