Always get angry when this thread gets bumped, best GK we have ever had - you have got to be joking?

It's getting to the point where we need to start saying best player we've ever had.

If De Gea is leaving I just don't think it's a good idea to force him to stay. Again that's an IF. Even though he is the best in the world I don't think losing a goalkeeper is as bad as losing an outfield payer that is the best in their position. Still a big loss but if we had the worlds best midfielder and were losing him I would be more gutted.
If DDG leaves at some point you're gonna be left with a bitter taste in your mouth. I say that because everyone else in the game is inferior and the impact he has for us so regularly will be clearly shown. On a night like tonight we would have been beaten. The lads a match winner at the opposite end of the pitch.

VDS was great but he underachieved at Juve and spending some of his prime years at Fulham. De Gea's underachievement have been wasting his prime being loyal to us.
I think you're wrong there, he is only beginning to come into the early stages of it.

Think I’d still have VDS in a top dominant team for his superb distribution, but DDG is the best shot stopper I’ve seen. We’d be so much worse off without him this season. Still maintain that Romero’s average performance was better last season though, which seems mind boggling now.
VDS had twin tower ferdinand and vidic in front of him , DDG has who ? the chuckle brothers smalling and jones , that alone cause all the difference

You have my support. De Gea is one of fhe best players we've ever had. Yep, in terms of sheer talent and performances, he is up there.

Yes, he is the best.

Tie-breaker being that neither Schmeichel neither VDS had to endure such an incompetent "defensive" line in front of them.

Dave is basically left for dead by his troops time after time for the past five years, and yet he manages to save the bacon.

Greatest keeper in the world, no doubt. And whoever doubts it just close your eyes and imagine your typical Neuer/Courtois behind Smalling and co. No way they'd have the same amount of clean sheets.

What DDG is doing is nothing short of a miracle work.

This lad saved Moyes' and Louis' buttocks for far too long. Now it's Mou's turn it seems. Give him whatever he wants and tie him to a new long-term contract with 1 billion pound release clause.

Agreed, he's the best we've ever had. I'd say in FM terms, his Current Ability is like 190 and Potential 199. He's unreal.

This next contract is his most important one in our eyes, get another 3-4 years out of him now and he will have played for us for the majority of his peak. Sell him this summer, and he will go on to win world cups, CL's for another club and be remembered as their goalkeeper.

Feels good to have at least one player who is better than anyone else in the World at what he does.

He is the best shot stopper/reaction saver but he ain't as good as big Pete at coming for crosses or organising his defence.
Don't think he is any better than big Pete at 1v1 or at distribution of the ball,so for me schmichael is still the best keeper I've ever seen although de gea is still one of the best keepers in the world at the moment.

The difference for me is that Schmichael had more costly mistakes in him.

Dave is a better shot stopper than VDS and hes either equal to or better than PS in that aspect. In terms of distribution VDS is the better of the three imo and PS is better at coming out for the ball. But overall I think I would rather have Dave than either VDS or PS so I guess I agree that hes better.

In terms of greatness he still does not compare to the other two because greatness to me comes with winning trophies and we've unfortunately been shit for most of the 7 seasons Dave has been with us.

Hahahaha 1 billion pound isn't even that much money these days.
We should tie him with a release clause of... One hundred quintillion sextillion pounds! :smirk:

Sorry but no. DDG is great but Peter Smikes was as influential at the club as Eric Cantona and is among the very best I've seen in more than 50 years watching football

I am going to stick my newbie neck on the line here and say that most people who were born in the 70s and young men or teenagers when big Pete was in goal for us and would have seen him play (not highlights on youtube) will vote for big Pete.
The guy had everything he even scored a goal!

DDG is better. Schmeichel cost us 2-3 games each season with major mistakes - DDG never makes mistakes. That tips the scale for me.

De Gea is probably a better shotstopper, than Schmeichel was, but i would argue, that it's the one area, he surpasses him, and it aint by much imo.

Schmeichels presence and commanding in the area was invaluable. And the way he distributed the ball, no one did better than him.

I read sometimes, that some of you think, that you lack leaders and winners in your team. Schmeichel is up there with Keane in that area imo. He never tolerated spineless performances, and he would call anyone out, if they weren't up to it.

De Gea is one if the best keepers in the world, and has been for some years now. You're lucky to have him!

But in my opinion, Schmeichel is one of the best keepers ever. He had no weaknesses imo.

Even at his peak schmeichel had a few calamitous performances in him a season. After his initial wobbly start de gea has been ridiculously consistent in his performances.

I love Pete and I love Edwin, but I think David is better than both of them, and it's just a shame he's unlikely to win what they did.

Is this still a debate? Crazy thing is that he is still only 2 and could get even better

Dave is the best, probably of all time.

That just how it works, it's very rare that the best of our current generation aren't the best of all time. He has learnt from Schmeichel and others but now he is on another level. Distribution, calmness, great footwork, reactions the lot.

In 20 years time we will probably be having the same debate with the latest "worlds best" goalkeeper and saying De Gea was better...(he probably wasn't)

DDG is the best we've ever had, unbelievable keeper. Think his distribution could be improved though, I think he's a bit dodgy with his kicking at times.

1) DDG made mistakes and early in his career was scared of coming for crosses 2) find me evidence of Peter costing us games

I can't remember Peter costing us "2-3 games each season". He had the odd howler, but I don't think it was anywhere close to that.

Still think Peter is the better keeper. De Gea is brilliant, but Peter had a similar skill level, he was more commanding in the area, he distributed better and he bossed the back four in a way that I don't think De Gea does. He organized the entire defence - albeit a better defence than what De Gea has had to deal with. He was probably also better on penalties and one vs. ones (of which I seem to remember there were more of before).

That's why I added "if true". It's still doesn't speak well about the team if fans consistently believe the GK has been the best player in a game. I found some Opta statistics from a recent article in the Telegraph about the "expected goals" metric when the types and amount of shots a goalkeeper faces. De Gea has faced 105 shots on target all season in the league.

Goalkeeper/ Expected goals conceded / Goals Conceded / Difference
David de Gea 32.6 19 -13.6
Nick Pope 28.9 20 -8.9
Fabianski 40.8 37 -3.8
Adrian 17.5 16 -1.5
Darlow 16.2 15 -1.2
Dubravka 1 0 -1
Heaton 4.9 4 -0.9
Gazzaniga 0.7 0 -0.7
Caballero 0.3 0 -0.3
Pickford 46.2 46 -0.2
Ospina 0.1 0 -0.1
Karius 6.6 7 0.4
Hennessey 27.6 28 0.4
Vorm 0.5 1 0.5
Speroni 13.4 14 0.6
Myhill 0.3 1 0.7
Karnezis 7.3 8 0.7
Mignolet 23.2 24 0.8
Courtois 22.2 23 0.8
Ederson 19 20 1
Lloris 21.6 23 1.4
Elliot 19.2 21 1.8
Grant 4.9 7 2.1
McCarthy 7.9 10 2.1
Cech 33.7 36 2.3
Gomes 36.5 39 2.5
Ryan 32.8 36 3.2
Forster 26.4 30 3.6
Begovic 37.3 41 3.7
Hart 25.5 30 4.5
Schmeichel 35.2 40 4.8
Butland 40.3 46 5.7
Lossl 39.1 47 7.9
Foster 30 39 9

Swap DDG with Cech and I bet us and Arsenal would have very different positions in the table. (excuse my bad formatting of the table, for some reason it is not showing the way I made it in my comment and I can't seem to put spaces in between the data to make it more readable, I did my best to make it understandable)
This is the whole data from it. But people say it's not true and the stats are manipulated to make it seem as if DDG has been saving us yet again this season.

How people rate him with other keepers like buffon or casillas?
He's comfortably better than both of them right now, but Buffon and Casillas are nowhere near the level they used to be.
I'd say peak De Gea (so pretty much last few years) is better than peak Casillas, who although a very good GK was somehow overrated (and lucky to play in very good teams, both Real and that absurdly good Spain).
With Buffon it's tricky, since he's been a fantastic keeper for so many years. I'm inclined to say De Gea got to peak Buffon goalkeeping level (or maybe even surpassed him, though that's debatable) but Gigi was a maestro when it came to organizing defense and orchestrating the backline... So I'm really not sure if I'd rather have peak Dave or peak Gigi. Probably DDG, just.

//edit - and saying it not for the first time, I am pretty sure de Gea is the best we've ever had.

He deserves to be challenging for the biggest honours. PL and CL. If we can't build a side good enough to challenge he'll go somewhere else and win. I'm worried he is wasting his prime years here. What a goalkeeper he is. The last gift from SAF before he retired.
