You're not going to find many top managers who will say that publicly. I reckon most managers period wouldn't even say that, so expecting Mourinho of all people to say that is delusional.
Keep using insults to support your arguments. He can say whatever he wants to if he backs his words with results. If you play ugly and don't win, things go down rather quickly. There are plenty of managers out there who say that they weren't good enough on the day and didn't deserve to win. You reckon maybe it's time to walk down the pedestal and stop reckoning?

He’s a dick-head. He’s always been a dick-head. He always will be a dick-head. The fact he’s currently our manager hasn’t changed my opinion about him being a dick-head one bit. So him behaving like a dick-head doesn’t shock me. The performance he got out of his team tonight, though. That was shocking.
Sounds like Brendan Gleeson in the film In Bruges.

Am I mistaken, or did Mourinho say after the 2013 Real tie that "the best team lost"?

He was so bloody humble back then!

I’ve always been quite pragmatic with Mourinho (lol), but he’s just desperately covering his ass with the way he delivered that segment and displayed a total lack of awareness.

You don’t tell the fecking fans ‘ah well you’ve dropped here before so it’s nothing new’ after that diabolical 2 legged performance.

You’ve lost a lot of favour in my eyes Jose so imagine how it’s gone down with the many who never wanted you at the helm in the first place.

Mourinho was let down badly badly by a numner of of players tonight, the system might not have been right, but the passing, possitioning, brain dead decision making, appaling attitude and general cowardice of some players cannot be placed at his door.
I just don't know. Maybe his brand of football and his man spirited attitude means he can't motivate them. It's really hard to know from the outside. But it feels very third season Jose tbh

Mourinho is a saboteur. He's also a born winner. His primary focus is ensuring we get as many points as possible in the league so it doesn't look like we're too far off City by the end of the season, and we finish second.

He also wants the cup and will go all out to win it. I think he knows we're not good enough to win the champions league so he's sacrificed it. Yes, that's right he's sabotaged his own team. Most of the time he sabotages the opposition but sometimes if he thinks it will be better in the long run he will sabotage his own side. Why be so blasé about going out to Seville? Why drop McTominay and start Fellaini? Lingard hasn't played in the league much, why start him? Why swap Rashford out to the right? Why drop Mata? Why? It's because he knows it's better to save the legs for the league and FA cup. At the end of the season we will be second and might win the FA Cup. In the summer he will add the players he wants and next season he will win the league, league cup, champions league and FA Cup. This is Mourinho's mentality. People shouldn't underestimate him.
Sabotage might be too strong a word but I feel you may be right otherwise; even before this match, Jose said that we're not one of the best sides in the competition...and to state such a negative - though honest - thing might've revealed his true thinking.

He doesn’t really treat this club with the respect it deserves, does he? I do like him, but he’s an epicunt, pure and simple.

Wind up or not, this is a pretty entertaining read as a theory. Certainly latches onto Mourinho's pragmatic side. Doesn't really make sense though in one aspect - Mourinho doesn't look to the future often (even next season is too far ahead for him).

IMO he is a coward trying to distance himself from the defeat and make it look as if this club is used to getting knocked out at this stage and, well, it's not my fault!

A sincere manager would have genuinely said something along the lines that "this was an important game and we lost which is really disappointing and very unlike Man utd a club used to win big games and shine in rough periods, we promise our fans that we'll bounce back as this great club has always done.. etc"

This is the first time I've heard Jose actually sound like a fecking coward. How is he pulling up previous losses when he was opposition manager as an excuse? He went down in my estimation tonight, quarter finals was minimum for a lot of us this season and beating Sevilla wasn't a lot to ask. Just shit. Absolutely shit. So disappointing.

So if you're going to direct your anger at anything, direct it at that. This comment is a nothing story, just like my response to everyone's rage regarding said comment.

Brilliant

You forgot to add that he played Fellaini to show the board that he needs 200m for 2 top class midfielders and Smalling because he needs 100m for a defender and Rashford out right because he needs another 100m for a right winger. Also, playing with the shackles on is just an elaborate way of making good players better for that glorious next season you mentioned.

Mourinho's all about his CV, and that's why I think he might - even subconsciously - focus on realistic targets of success. Besides, last season's giving up on top 4 in favour of the EL revealed that he doesn't have much faith in his players (IMO).

That United have gone out early in the Champions League before and have bounced back. That it's not the end of the world. And that is because he has seen it before when he was the manager at difference clubs. Porto shocked and knocked United out early in 2004. Four years later, United lifted the trophy. It was just a weird way to explain it, but consider that he's not speaking in his native language, so statements will have a tendency come off oddly.
So you find it acceptable that after giving the fans a shitshow like that, he turns around and goes ‘oh well it’s happened before nothing new for this club’ citing examples of when he sat in the better positioned ‘chairs’ at Porto and Real? Nothing annoying in that?

At this point, i'm convinced you like the sound of your own voice. "This lot" are fans of the club and a club without fans...The fact he's created controversy show at the very least lack of awareness. He's not won enough or done enough to deserve an out. Also, one doesn't need to be on the surface of the Sun to know it's hot.

You talk about them and us with such confidence that you got me confused, are you on the pitch managing or just another spec of the lot on the forum? Having reasonable expectations is now delusional and everyone who wants more from the gaffer is just being emotional. Check yourself before you wreck yourself. This last sentence came out of nowhere :)

No, he’s not.
He definitely is. This is just like those LVG "fans need to set their expectations right" comment. Jose should admit getting knocked out at this stage is a failure for us not an "ah well, we made it to the knockouts!".

He even said very good teams like Totenham are out of it. We should be bigger than Totenham.

I’ve already explained what he’s saying there. It clearly isn’t anything other than an “I’ve seen United go out of the CL before and United bounced back” but if people want to make mountains out of mole hills, then I suppose they will.

This is another example of words being twisted to fuel your anger. That's merely a comment he makes to the press. Behind closed doors, the man is probably giving players the hairdryer treatment and breaking chairs. So no, I don't find this in particular annoying. I'm annoyed about actual things worth being annoyed at, like our fecking performance, which unlike some useless post-match comment, actually have an effect on the results.

I think he's trying to say that he's been here before with the other teams, yet Manchester United still progressed in later years. He was there with Porto, then United won the CL a few years later so it's not the end of the world is what I think he is trying to say.
We were better than Porto and better than Madrid until Nani's red card. He's full of shit. I can accept being knocked out by a ghost goal/unlucky break/bad ref decision but not like this. We were outplayed fair and square over two legs by Sevilla, schooled us at home and should've won and schooled as at our place. The whole set up for this tie is unacceptable.

He doesn't say what you've quoted, but does say what I said. He said a great team like Totenham are also out of the champions league. Combine that with what he said in the OP and it makes more sense that he is diminishing our expectations. All managers do it to some extent but Jose is pretty arrogant with it.

However, it's a double edged sword. His arrogance and stubbornness is part of his brilliance that has made him such a great manager and figure. On the flip side, it has made him look like a clown at times.

Of course there are more pressing and concerning annoyances, that’s bleeding obvious.

I just feel that the fans had expectations going in to this game, and Jose has a lot of credit and patience with us - even when things go spectacularly wrong no one is under any illusion of what kind of job Jose has on his hands. But then to crash out in the manner we did, and to brush it off as ‘ah well it’s happened to Manchester United before nothing new’ is grating. It was his job not to and not a very difficult one at that, so to bring up examples of when he’s personally knocked us out (when we were the better team even on those occasions ffs) was just inappropriate for the specific time and context. IMO imo.

This isn’t going to make me turn on him, that’s knee jerk and out right stupid. But it was an idiotic comment.

You lot, meaning, you lot who are raging at this nothing comment. It doesn't take an astrophysicist to deduce that. And I'm not the only one who feels this way. The General Forum has a thread titled, "Is the United Forum Safe to Go Into Yet?", which has many reasonable posters who don't post much in the United Forum anymore because of knee-jerk posts and posters.

And before you respond, consider my stated points:
  • Mourinho's comment was not a dig at the club
  • There are many posters in this thread getting overly angry at this nothing comment
  • This comment doesn't change the fact that we played shit
  • United have bounced back from early exits before
  • There are plenty of other real problems to criticize

Ultimately what he said wasn't important.

We should focus on just how badly he fecked the tie up with his tactics and lineup and substitutions and general mentality. That's the important part,

Mourinho is a big name in football. He's won trophies everywhere. He is very self assured and talks in a way which will either confuse you or make you think he is a tactical genius.

Fwiw, I wanted Ancelotti after SAF retired. I knew we would decline after he retired - I mean, come on, he managed to inspire a team featuring Welbeck, Cleverley and Anderson to beat arsenal 8-2. He won everything with us. We were so comfortable, because we had the best man manager in footballing history. Even rivals admit this.

Post SAF - Moyes and LVG - disastrous but expected. Our squad needed an overhaul, the 'deadwood' needed removing. We were backed by the board relative to Fergies last year's (although Fergie actually was motivated to make good investments) but there was still abit of resentment to the owners...

So we hire Mourinho, (first paragraph). A huge portion of our fanbase are satisfied. Add to that he is very well connected in global football, regarding attracting established names. He signs such players, he breaks world transfer fee records / wages - Ibrahimovic, Pogba, Matic and Sanchez - he makes us incredible on fifa on paper.o are albeit one very established in the game. These are the players he chose to buy with the money Woodward allocated him

The way we are playing at this moment is simply unacceptable or laughable. I'm not one to be protesting against individuals be it players or the manager but this squad is not performing for our manager.

Or Pogba, Sanchez, Matic, Mata, Rashford, Young, Valencia - basically everyone, is shite and needs replacing? Not to mention the best goalkeeper in the world.

It's not the best way to convey a point, I agree. But consider that not being a native English speaker means getting certain points across will sometimes go poorly. Don't get me wrong about my expectations with results. I'm very annoyed with how slow our progress has been. I'm very annoyed that we as a club don't strictly adhere to a more attacking ethos. I'm very annoyed that we merely go out of the UCL in the Round of 16. And these are what I direct my anger at. And I know that what he says to the press is not going to accurately reflect what he says to his players or how he personally feels. I guarantee that inside, he is extremely livid.

It could very well be that what Mourinho said is being misconstrued, it wouldn't surprise me. However we all know that he is quite arrogant and has plenty of form in comments that could be also misconstrued as demeaning.

However these comments do nothing but add insult to the injury that was the shitshow we were subjected to tonight. It just wasn't good enough from a man who last week was being hailed as a tactical genius. Of course the players have to take some of the blame as a lot of them over the course of Josés reign just haven't looked motivated at times, but a team with De Gea, Pogba, Matic, Sanchez, Martial, Rashford, Bailly and Valencia shouldn't need to play such negative football against an average Spanish side, but Jose chose to play such tactics and the fans have paid the price.

To me when I watched the pressers, I think he is basically saying the club have been in this position before - getting knocked out at home. We can be pissed off for the next 24 hours but have to look at Saturday now. That’s the message he tried to get across in his strange/articulate way.

His answer to me didn’t come across as anything other than that. Reading the comments as text on twitter take it out of context just like some reporting Lukakus “players went missing” remark tonight.

The rest of his comments are protecting the team - rather than pointing the finger and going “actually he was shit, that was shit, I was shit.”

Storm in a teacup. Nothing to see here.

Those comments are his way of "getting back" at the fans who boo-ed him off at full time. His ego can't take it, and he can't criticize them outright after such a disastrous result.

I may have taken it more personally than I should have tbf, but then when many like me afford him the patience - I don’t expect to be made felt like I expect too much. We’re Manchester fecking United, get me.

But yeah I get your point about the language thing. Still think he needs to watch his words cos this ain’t Chelsea FC, he needs the fans on side or he’ll be out the door quick.
