As much fun as it is laughing at City having trouble selling tickets it's not as if Liverpool didnt have similar problems in the 70s and 80s.

When they played CSKA Sofia the ground was half empty for a Q/F in 82. Loads of other games were poorly attended.
Well firstly, they are not having problems selling tickets and secondly, they had a bigger attendance than Liverpool in the last round..

Tbf by then they'd been on top for five years and won the European Cup three times. City on the other hand...

Hilarious but not surprising. I should add that's not a shot at Liverpool but rather that the Etihad is often sparingly filled.
Agreed Katie. It really is such a joke that a club like City is artificially catapulted into the top tier by the UAE's oil money when they can't even sell tickets for a Champions league home match :)
Let's hope they knock our real rival out though. Then the sooner they fall back into oblivion the better for all football supporters.

I hate Liverpool and seeing them win or the prospect of them winning is horrible for me. They are a real club, with real values and will have deserved what success is attained so I hope City take them down. I barely give a shit about City nor should anyone outside of their own fans.

Having got that off my chest. I think the first game will be a score draw but I guess nothing would surprise here from a 0-0 to a 1-4 to a 4-1.

City is and always will be what they are, a club based solely on Arab oil-money. It doesn’t hurt me, their fans’ opinions don’t interest me, I don’t know a single City-fan here in Norway.

I hope they crush Liverpool, and they will. Not a single Liverpool-player would make City significantly better, not even Salah. Pep is much better than Klopp at every part of the game, this has to end only one way.

All I keep hearing about is the Anfield atmosphere, It will see us through. They have 2 mins singing the Celtic theme tune and then its like most other PL grounds. Quiet.
It is solid on a big on a big European night and teams shit themselves . It doesnt mean we will win but it has effected teams in the past. In modern times Chelsea , Juventus , Madrid and United have all shat it. As for the Celtic theme tune you are spouting shite lad.

Our average attendances in the 82/83 season was less than 40,000 . It was more a reflection of the City's political and economical struggles than fans not being arsed going.

Meh. Even in the 70s Anfield had plenty of low gates.

The Anfield atmosphere is a big myth.

Dont think my last post posted.

To your first comment read my post again. Liverpool as a city had problems politically ( not as bad in the 80's though) and economically in the 70's too. I dont remember attendaces in the 70's as was only a little rag arse. Post some stats if you like.

Your second post. Jose even said in 2005 that he felt the power of Anfield.

If we are going to start taking footballers words as gospel than Sagna said similar things about The Bridge. Every stadium in Europe that has seen regular CL knockout footy has had their moments, even The Emirates.
Anymore quotes from players on the Bridge ?

This is why City have to beat Liverpool. World football doesn't care about City's success... But nor do their own fans!

Liverpool winning means something. Therefore it cannot happen.

City are one of the best teams in world football but the size of the club is miniscule compared to others. The other clubs in the Premier League top 6 are all bigger clubs than City, the top teams in every other major league are bigger than City and a few of the teams in minor European Leagues (Olympiakos, Ajax, Fenerbache, Galatassary, Porto etc) are all bigger clubs than City.
They may have a good team but the club will always be small time compared to the greats

I assure you that Van Gaal's United shat themselves regularly without any sort of pressure from a hostile atmosphere. They managed to be terrible just fine regardless of the opposition fans.

And I remember well that before we played Chelsea away in one of the European games the club put plastic flags on every seat in the ground and had to encourage their fans to make an atmosphere in the programme.

Iam on about European nights so I must be speaking about the Europa game and yes you shat it. The media even picked up on it and write articles on some United players looking over their shoulders singing when lining up before the game.

I understand that you meant the EL. I still think it's rubbish and convenient media narrative to claim it was the atmosphere that caused United to play shite, in a season when we played shite with an almost admirable consistency.

Anfield 'atmosphere' is all about the pre-match build up. I've been several times and that is the only thing that stands out. Anfield is like every other club with a good sized stadium, large parts of the stadium is filled with casual fans that are more concerned with taking pictures and videos instead of singing.

There was an interview on RedmenTV from a regular match going fan that said that he's experienced the atmosphere deteriorate over time, and that's not the only account.

European nights at Anfield is just a myth that's perpetuated just because it's Liverpool. Their atmosphere was shit when they drew with Porto. Virtually every club will have a great atmosphere when they are playing Bayern Munich or Real Madrid at home, or their arch rivals in a knockout tie.

Good post, I respect your views and mine a similar in terms of not wanting United to win either but respect the Club.
Its very difficult to predict a score as it could be anything. I think the only certainty is that LIverpool will need to be very, very good over two games to beat City. Anfield will be an intimidating place for the City players so its a question of their character as their footballing ability speaks for itself.

Anfield won them the ties against borussia and villarreal in '16. Now not saying it will carry them past city, but the atmosphere there in big european nights is no myth

The "we're going to intimidate Man City into crumbling"/ "look at our magical welcome coach parade" lines are so cringe-inducing. Its as though they believe their own lies about their atmosphere. City have plenty of players from South America/players who have played in hostile European derbies for former clubs. The fans over here are tame in comparison.

Forget South America, City have been to Napoli this season and i think even the biggest Liverpool fan would admit Anfield even at its best doesn't hold a candle to the Stadio San Paolo.

Heh, i dunno. San Paolo has the athletic track and the stadium itself doesn't amplify noise as much as anfield. Plus it wasn't a knockout game and city were crusing their group by then. And they were getting taken apart until Ghoulam and Mertens injuries...

They're better and it's unlikely that anfield will have that much of an impact on them, sure. But that doesn't mean Anfield won't be a bedlam on wednesday

The most annoying thing. of course there will be big nights against big teams. They were shite under Rogers, with the atmosphere to boot. But yeah act like a 4 3 comeback is standard, even when its Rickie Lambert and Balotelli upfront

It's not just about noise. Support in Europe is manufactured; often led by an orchestrator or done ritually.

Support in England is completely different. The fans are in sync and adjust to the side's momentum accordingly - you can look at Dortmund 15/16 or Chelsea 04/5 for examples of how this manifested at Anfield. Or even the way the intensity of the atmosphere changed when blood was smelt against Man City in January and they conceded 3 goals in 8 minutes. See Guardiola's quotes about how they got the 'lost in the emotion of Anfield' after that game. Completely different to having a band of ultras banging on a drum for 90 minutes, and it's what makes English football atmosphere - and by extension Anfield, unique.

I do agree with that, but I just don't see how that's exclusive to just Liverpool as some would make you believe.

I was at that game in the away end and I can assure you it wasn't as great an atmosphere you are making it out to be.

Utd were just very poor that game and it had absolutely nothing to do with atmosphere.

Trust me, places like Stadio Olympico, San Siro and Stade Velodrome are far more intimidating than Anfield.

I'd say that out of the top 6 clubs, that kind of atmosphere can only be created at Anfield these days. Not too often - but it has done on various occasions in Europe.

This is where I probably disagree mate. There is nothing special or magical about Anfield. It's a stadium full of 1000's of other passionate supporters just like any other of the top 6's stadiums. Liverpool fans don't have louder voices than other sets of fans and they aren't disproportionately more passionate than them either. Any ground given the right circumstances like you say can be loud and intimidating. I honestly think you only feel that way because you support Liverpool and its a falsity thats perpetuated quite often; especially by your own fans.

When was the last time a game that 'sold out' didn't have a significant amount of empty seats at the Etihad?

And tickets going on general sale for a CL quarter final is unusual. Utd and Arsenal almost never go on general sale, and when they do it's usually a league cup game, or dead rubber at the end of the season.

Manchester City average nearly 10,000 empty seats for Premier League games at Etihad Stadium – despite official attendances claiming it’s virtually full
