Crossing isn't the only thing full backs should do. A full back that can cross but can't defend isn't worth shit. No use sending in one or two nice crosses a game if you're giving away 5 or 6 chances at the other end. Valencia is a very solid right back, we can improve on him, definitely. But it needs to be the right player. Buying any old over hyped right back for 60m won't improve us in the way you think it will.
The game has moved on. The defensive side is not the most important part of the fullback anymore. No one will say a player like Marcelo is great at defending, he still leaves loads of spaces behind him and makes several mistakes but Madrid are willing to sacrifice this for the sake of his attacking side, in which Marcelo is one of their best attacking weapons. Fullbacks are all about their attacking side at modern football. A fullback who can't attack is useless.

He's converted it to an embedded video.
Said at the start he apparently speaks English so that would help him in the adaptation process.

Most of those highlights are in empty stadiums so am guessing a lot of the scouting was done with him playing in Uefa under 21 Champions league.

You've signed guy in similar stage of development to Tuanzabe and Fosu-Mensah.

I think he is exactly what we need for the right back position, as he can be backup and long-term replacement for Valencia. With Darmian leaving, we need some more depth. Tuanzebe and TFM will probably go on loan for the coming season as well. He has very few games at the top level for Porto, but remember that they have some very exciting full-backs in Telles and Pereira. Porto have been trying to raise his release clause for some time as well, so it would make sense for them to wait until this was fixed before unleashing him in their first team.

According to the Telegraph, he's set to be our first signing:

If we've agreed personal terms and are willing to pay the release clause, it should be announced pretty soon. Within the next 48 hours, I'd say. Maybe.
How can the club be so selfish as to expect us to wait 48 hours? That's a eternity. Wars have been won in less time?

I disagree. Jose likes his defenders to be able to do both. It’s ridiculous to suggest that it is secondary to the team otherwise we may as ell convert all our wingers to defenders.

Is say only City play with players I wouldn’t term as defenders but they rely so much on the midfield to do a great bulk of defending

Cancelo would give us absolutely nothing more than Valencia does. It's ridiculous even thinking about it. Cancelo just is not very good. Would be about as useful as Darmian, in fact he's probably not as impressive in Serie A as Darmian was.
Cancelo would contribute much more than Valencia does in attack. He's technically a much better player with the ball.

Cancelo had a good season for Inter and I wouldn't be surprised if he contributed more in 22 appearances than what Darmian did in his years at Torino.

I'm impatient!

Pep will probably swoop in and steal the deal while we're preparing a bid.
But we're the swoopers, mate! We swooped Lukaku from Chelsea and Sanchez from City. Pep is the one who should watch out we don't swoop De Bruyne from him.

I hope this is not our only RB signing. We need someone good enough to be starter immediately. Valencia offers zero negative going forward.
If signing him on the cheap means we have to make do with Valencia but we get Alex Sandro for LB I'd take it.

I didn't say it's secondary, rather said attacking more important than defending for the modern fullback. Of course gonna be great to have a back that excels at both but I know what my choice will be if I had to choose between an ultra attacking back and an ultra defensive one.

A full back who plays for a elite level club and has defeciencies in the attacking third is a liability.

New Varela.

Seriously have no idea on his ability good or bad considering he's play so few senior games.

One thing I would say given Lindelof's issues in settling in don't expect too much for next season.

Either Valencia or someone else will still be starting majority of games at RB.
How do you even remember him and your not even Utd fan?

I’m all for this signing but I am slightly worried about the fact he can play either RB or LB.

Just makes me think we will still have young and Valencia playing next season with Dalot filling in if necessary

That's a wild generalisation. Of course, defending is important. Marcelo isn't poor at defending at all. Not great but not poor either.

All elite football clubs have fullbacks that can dribble and cross or even score on their own. Also Marcelo has never been known for being that good defensively.

So all the guys that guaranteed that Valencia wouldn't be the right back next season ... where does this leave us ?
From the looks of it i’d say those people are still on pretty steady ground. Hopefully we’ll still bring in another RB a long with this guy. However i’d Imagine he’ll be Darmian replacement and understudy to Valencia.

There are not many experienced rb's around that looks great at the moment. Taking a chance on this guy or perhaps Odriozola to rotate with Valencia next season might just be our best bet.
Sidibe, Meunier, Bellerin, Cancelo, Vrsjalko, Ordiozola, Hysaj

There are more than enough good rightbacks who can immediately shift into our team.

No idea what this bloke is like but did anybody seriously believe that Valencia's first team place was under threat this summer?

Mourinho loves him. He'll be starting every week. That we're alleged to be signing a kid like this only makes sense and serves to reinforce that Valencia will be first choice right back next season.

On topic (moreso), I hope he's good. We don't really go down the exotic punt route so hopefully it comes off.
