No, it isn't. How does playing 'ineffectual' football result in finishing second in the league?
We could just as easily have finished fourth. Spurs and Liverpool both showed a higher ceiling than us before folding in the league for different reasons. Our weak showing against Sevilla was reflective of our general level of performances this season. I think any reasonably objective United fan would agree that our league position reflected very generously on us.

Mo has favourites, Martial wasn't one of them simple as.. He likes fighters Martials 'Gallic' demeanour just wasn't for him. He will never get a fair crack of the whip best for him personally if he leaves. I think a massive missed opportunity to play Sanchez on the right with Martial on the left has been missed, with Lukaku up top thats a devastating front line once it clicks . Seems obvious promises were made to Sanchez about where he would play and that scuppered that. This could all turn out to be a big mistake for the club favouring a possibly past his very best 30 year old and a proven short term manager who is due his inevitable meltdown over a future potentially great talent. Time will tell of course it could go either way..

What does poking in eye has to do with anything? Even a professionals sometimes make mistakes?
Of course he's not 100 percent right but brigging up Tito episode is completely unnecessary.
How does it not have anything to do with it. We're discussing Mou's character. Poking the eye of someone, is part of his character. As is his inability to ever admit fault. Mou is human. And as a human, he is not perfect. So why would you automatically assume Mou is 100% fair in everything he does? There is no evidence of Martial being some cnut in practice. Yet you guys are using that as evidence for why Martial should not have gotten the minutes.

Are you guys listening to yourselves? Why not assess Mou's actions that are verifiable? And that is the minutes given to both Martial and Sanchez, based on performance. Sanchez was mediocre and was given chance after chance. That's a fact.

The exact can be said about Martial, yes he lost his spot to Sanchez but he never regained the form he showed prior to Alexis joining. Lingard and Martial had an almost identical season, yet one demands playing time and the other works hard, does what he's asked to do and fights for his spot. I'd love it if Martial stayed, and I don't blame him for wanting more time, but if he doesn't love the club enough to stay and fight then selling him is better for both parties.
It's not about just loving the club and fighting for your spot... every player needs to feel wanted and see a path for themselves, a future for themselves at the club. The way Mourinho used our squad since hes come in, did anyone seriously feel that Martial was ever in his long term plans? It was pretty blatant that Mourinho preferred Rashford om the left from the start, and up top from the start. Yeah he rotated both and this season martial was playing so well and having such an impact from the bench that eventually he had to start him a bit consistently. But then he signed Sanchez on the left wing, with Lukaku up top, and left Rashford and Martial to rotate as the impact sub. Not even rotating starts anymore. With the clear history that Mourinho preferred Rashford since his arrival. So he has every right to want to leave. That's not a situation where you stay and fight. Theres no point, because in the managers eyes, he has no important role.

Why have people convinced themselves that there was a possibility of Sanchez being dropped if Martial stayed in good form? No 'fight for his place' was ever going to take place after Sanchez came in. It was either Martial getting used to a position he'd barely played in his career or being dropped. All this stuff about him running away from a challenge is bullshit really.

The big question is whether or not you trust Mourinho to offload players like Martial, bring in the right ones to replace him and then compensate for the 38 goals league goals in which we trailed City. Not forgetting the four out of the league five rivals who outscored us - again.

It's difficult to share the enthusiasm for this news, whether you rate Martial or not.

Martial leaving is the best outcome to the current situation. He hasn't been blameless but Mourinho has truly fecked him up all things considered, for a player who wasn't and isn't worth it (Sanchez).

How did Mourinho stop Martial from going to the WC? Only person who did that, was himself. He was in the France squad a right upon till the end, he clearly never showed anything to Deschamp that he deserved a place in the squad. Clearly he must have been playing half decent for Mourinho, to have got in the squad in the first place?!

Keep a clean shit tomorrow, United is my final bus
Was a huge believer in his ability but his application has been extremely frustrating these last 2 years. Even when he scores, he still is far from perfect. I know he has it in his locker but I'm beyond caring now.

I'm sick of players causing issues. Martial and his agent have been doing it for the last 2 years trying to strongarm the club. I defended him at first when he lost his shirt number, but I won't anymore. I want to see our players doing the business in the pitch and enjoying themselves. We've had better squads than this that have won top honours, yet our squad players never complained.

If he doesn't end up in England, Im ok. His first season was awesome, next 2 not so much. Him going would compell us to buy a RW. Tbh, it's the club which comes first.

He had his chances n Sanchez is a better player right now. Enough of getting emotions attached to a player. If we can do without Beckham, Ronaldo..hell we ll be fine without him.

If I were Martial I'd definitely leave, he's not going to get game time ahead of hardworking veteran Sanchez under Jose. Not like he was even a regular before Sanchez's arrival

Feck it! He’s a great player in the making but his attitude is seemingly crappy.

I hope Jose, Ribalta and the lads have a good plan for the coming season and I think there are probably other very exciting replacements out there who will graft hard and fight for their place.

On the other hand- Jose isnt doing well with a fair few of our players. Pogba, Martial and Shaw unhappy, Rashford has looked stifled, Sánchez has looked poor, miki looks a little better for Arsenal and we have no threat from the right hand side. For example Pogba is a Jose signing. Jose should be able to manage this player, he should have known if he was a winner or a sulker before he broke the world transfer record and the fact Pogba already played for the club. How much more access can we have to a player?! I really hope we are getting a decent plan together for the long term, I’m still not sure. Selling Martial in this context may prove to be yet another step in the wrong direction. For what it’s worth I think Martial, Shaw and Depay would have run through walls for Fergie.

Calm down mate. Who are 'the people' you're referring too. Did I say he shouldnt have been given more minutes? Maybe I'm The People who knows.

as for poking in the eye when did it happen, how much longer will it be mentioned? As someone said on the previous page he has calmed down a bit but even that's a problem. Where's that fiery Mou now, and when he has a big talk it's ooooh here we go it's meltdown again as if people can't wait for him to have a meltdown.

I didnt say he's 100 fair in everything did I? I just say mentioning that poking in the eye incident is ridiculous and has absolutely fu.k all with this story. If I didn't know better I'd say you and your People have an agenda.

There's no evidence of Martial being cnut in practice and there's no evidence Jose is omitting him just cause he's an evil cnut who pokes people in the eyes.

I remember people saying Welbeck will be a new Henry. Maybe not a good comparison cause Martial is of course lot more talented but just to portray the panic we're seeing here now.
Did you just compared martial with welbeck? Yes i am panicking. There are 3 players that i want in our squad and that they deserve my panic. Dave, pogba and martial.
But not saying that all that happened is not martials fault. He is to blame for some things also

It’s a shame. But then again he hasn’t taken the chances he is given. Not yet consistent enough. You earn your place, you don’t just warrant one.

If agent quotes are true - then it’s everything out of the pram. Contract talks, blaming Sanchez signing for ruining his season (when he only had a month of form), manager etc.

Players need to be willing to fight. Martials character doesn’t seem to have it - not yet anyway.
I agree. Which makes it even more bizarre that Sanchez came in and displaced Martial after he found his form during November/December. You can understand why he'd be pissed given he fought Rashford for his place only for Sanchez with questionable form takes his.

Put that to one side, people questioning his desire seem a bit eager to put the boot in when other young players have left Jose teams and developed into world class talents. Martial has probably decided to follow the same route as De Bruyne/Salah and I don't blame him at all. Rashford will have similar problems imo as he isn't a Jose forward either (he doesn't put the defensive duties in just like Martial).

It's disappointing to see one of our young stars frustrated when we're a club that has a tradition of bringing through talent like this and making them flourish into World stars.

Because the logic is that Mou is in charge of his minutes. And if he doesn't give minutes to Martial, he is not letting Martial prove himself to belong on the French national team. It's similar to the reason that Mou gave for not letting Bailly on the pitch.

Gutted. We never should've allowed him to be in a situation where he wants to leave but it's been a long time coming.

Jose dropped Pogba.

He will drop any player not performing.

Well I hope we'll have a good next season and win something and selling Martial wont be an issue at all if we'll sell him at all. Maybe he'll stay one more year.
I know many want to get rid of Jose asap but he's staying one more year at least. But it's a make or brake for me too. Have a successful season or it's time to go.
Tbh think he'll be here for 2 seasons regardless of if next season is successful or not. Dont think theres a chance that we get rid of him as long as he keeps top 4. Winning a league cup or FA cup is always nice, but doesnt change anything really. Cant see us doing anything serious in the CL. I think the board want a bit of continuity and hes a big name and brings all the attention and media, which is unfortunately the biggest thing for Woodward et al. That's the part that bums me out. Hypothetically we could repeat this exact season, and I dont think our board would do anything. It'll sooner come to Mourinho walking out on his own than us getting rid.

He’ll be looking for someone like Willian who is an inferior player now, let alone in a couple of years, but ‘puts in a shift’. Less end product, not going to improve much and a short term measure.

No, just comparing the panic from that time with this one. :) Martial is a lot better, that's clear.

I don't think we'd sell him to Spurs given the recent impass in transfers between the clubs. Also, given the apparent quoted price of Alderweireld it wouldn't be cheap.

I'm sure Son will get out of the military service, and if he didn't who would buy him?
With Son, the question might be who would buy him this summer. And I'd think there'd be plenty of interest if he was put up sale, though this would potentially only happen if Martial was coming to Spurs.

Re. Alderweireld, I'd guess that Levy's price - assuming we actually wanted Martial - would be dependent on Martial coming the other way. If there's no quid pro quo, then it's one price, but if there's a swap deal of some kind then the price of Toby drops.

Of course if United simply won't sell Martial to use, then that's that. But if Martial would like to come to Spurs, then I'm not entirely sure that United would block the way, given that they want Toby.

Jose will anyway be gone by the end of the year. Just loan Martial out for the year bloody hell. Can't believe we're going to lose this sort of talent for goddamn Mourinho. Detest that man.

If we just get top 4 next season I dont think Ed will be happy.

Do you seriously disagree? It looked a coin toss until the last few games. You're not driven by an agenda at all, right?
No, I just state facts. We finished second, and Mourinho being one of the most successful managers in history being two of them.

You spout agenda driven nonsense featuring your biased opinion and what might have happened (but didn't).

Near Christmas maybe. If only if it was right now.

You sure? Martial had 11 goals by the end of January. Then Sanchez came and Martial didn't score for the rest of the season. Sanchez scored 3 goals and he was starting pretty much every game. There's a very.good chance Martial would've got 20 if he'd been continued starts off the back of a top January.
Football doesn't work like that. The circumstances would be different. For example, bottom of table clubs especially those who fight to stay up would be more pragmatic and harder to break down toward the end of the season. Martial is more efficient as impact player than as 90 minute player. There is other thing to do beside goals especially in tight game.

It will happen to just about every 'top' player we buy going forward.

Fred will need replaced. So will Griezmann if he comes and we realise he's apparently not very good. Just like Martial. Just like Pogba. Just like Sanchez.

For some poor souls, the penny will never drop.
It's very sad. Players that have arrived looking like world beaters at their previous clubs are somehow not good enough for us. It's an indictment on the club we've become. Instead we resort to blaming their attitudes to console ourselves without any real indication. The environment at the club is not right when not one, not two but numerous players are being ruined. That's why perhaps Martial would be better off elsewhere. There's a part of me that is sad he will go but there's a part of me that is happy for him and quite excited to see what he can do under a different manager and different philosophy.

I am calm. Again, the whole point of this entire conversation or argument is whether or not you believe Mou was fair in the minutes given to Martial and Sanchez. The evidence to me shows that he was being unfair due to on pitch performance. Sanchez was not some standout player, yet was given more minutes than Martial. This is why Martial is likely deciding he wants to leave. Because he saw Sanchez's performances and yet can't buy some more minutes.

Believing he was fair is all based on something off the pitch of which none of us are privy to. And if that is the go to reason for anything criticizing Mou, then there is no point ever criticizing Mou right? Because that reason is something none of us can see, yet something that people can always fall back on.

Don’t blame him at all for wanting to leave. In fact I admire him for it. He’s just not a Jose player; I don’t think any amount of “fighting for his place” would change that.

Wherever he goes, I wish him well. While I think he’d benefit from a change of manager, I don’t think it’s at all certain that he’ll suddenly become fantastic.

I’m a lot more concerned by the likelihood of Alexis failing to improve next season than by the loss of Martial.

Exactly.
I wish he had a meltdown during preseason. That would be golden.
Maybe he'll at last lose the dressing room.
