Agreed.

That's why I wouldn't have a problem paying his wages, but a huge transfer fee is out of the question, for me.
If he genuinely wants to leave and is open to returning for a year or two then I would find it hard to believe all parties couldn't make a loan happen - we pay his full wages but no transfer fee.

Why would Madrid ever agree to that?

Because he wants to leave and there aren't going to be any clubs willing to pay his transfer fee. We wont, PSG have FFP problems, and the others can't afford him.
That seems like very naive thinking to me.

Why would Madrid not just lower the transfer price a bit and atleast get something from United - rather than loaning him to us with no transfer fee. This aren’t going to happen.

And how are you even certain he wants to leave? What has changed compared to the last few years where the same has been said (almost) every summer.

Been following Willian this world cup, and he seems pretty under par to me at the moment. Does not make those off the ball attacking runs threatening the opposition defense. Just stays wide, creates a little but the final ball ain't great as well.

Don't you think Mahrez would be a smarter signing compared with Ronaldo, Bale and William?
Mahrez is not injury prone with high wages like Bale... he's six years younger than Ronaldo and IMO he is a better player than William. We could sign Mahrez and a LB (Sandro?) for the money Madrid is asking for Bale.

I dont think Mahrez is that strong in the transition compared to Willian.

He's basically a fullback at this point, very generic, him and valencia on the same flank would be so samey with a lack of any real invention.

The Cafe's view on Ronaldo is just ridiculous. What's more astounding is that it was the same for a few seasons, and he keeps destroying teams. Season after season people are like too old, don't want or show a preference for far inferior players, and season after season he's keeps on being the best player in the world. It's one of the wonders of this site, surely? He'd probably rather stay/go somewhere else, so all this is mute anyway, but it's just funny!

Willian is quick with his feet and excellent at turning the ball from one side to another, but when he skips his marker, the cross is very, very often just lofted in without any purpose. Very similar to Valencia to be honest, sometimes you're lucky and most times the ball just flies over everyone. From the wings, Willian is not very dangerous. He is seemingly very good when he comes into the middle and fires a shot, but just look at the stats, he doesn't really yield many goals. So a right-sided player than does not deliver great from the wings, I'm not so sure. Better than what we have? Well yeah... even though I'd say Sanchez on the right and Martial on the left is better than Sanchez on the left and Willian on the right with no Martial at all. Willian beats Martial when it comes to defensive duties, hands down.

Would be happy if he came, who doesn't like a new signing, but I would also think that this is not enough to compete with the best teams and he is not getting better. Sanchez - Lingard - Willian with Lukaku up front is not a team that wins the CL, neither is Sanchez - Lukaku - Willian in a three with Pogba - Matic - Fred behind them. Just typing Alexis' name so many times makes me wonder how he will turn up next season, will truly be like a "new " signing... I just hope he does exceptionally well, like we know he can.

Willian is shite. I hope we stay clear of him. For a RW his output is nowhere near good enough for what you would expect from a title winning team. We don't score enough goals as it is now. The team needs someone capable of getting double figures in goals or assists from the wing.

For me it’s that I don’t like the idea of him spending his prime years at Madrid then coming back to us once they’re done with him. I’m also put out by the way he’s used us as leverage for new deals at Madrid over the years.

And you can talk about him doing it season after season, but even Ronaldo can’t go on forever. Madrid can see the writing on the wall, otherwise they’d pay him whatever he wants.

I’m just not a fan of going back, we need to look to the future with new Ronaldo’s.

For me there are two options:
Either we invest in a upcoming young RW like Pulisic, Malcolm, Bailey etc, we could've even pick Gelson Martins up on a free. There are a lot of options. Players with world class potential and develop them for the next 2/3 years.
OR we spend big on a marquee signing like Bale/Ronaldo ie the finished product and build the team around that player. Someone with the X factor. Someone we know that will be the star player in our title challenge. Something Willian has never been 5 years at Chelsea. They won the title twice in 14/15 and 16/17 and both seasons Willian was never automatic stater. The stars of 14/15 were Hazard and Costa and again in 16/17. How can you rely on someone like this to spearhead our title challenge? He is a squad player and a very good squad player but not a starter.

My preference is the first one.
All the title winning teams have had wide players that got into double figures for either goals or assists or both and a striker who does the same. See Sterling last season, see Hazard in 14/15, Mahrez in 15/16. When was the last time we had a player that was reliable like these players?

Oh I agree with you fully. I was being sarcastic in my earlier post. Willian is not the player who will elevate us to major honours.

I know you were being sarcastic. :D I'd question your judgement if you wasn't.

It's all over here in Spain, in all the media: the source is Eduardo Inda from OkDiario, with close ties to Real's board and Florentino. I don't think Inda would say this if Florentino wouldn't want to. Tonight in El Chiringuito sure it will be confirmed or dismissed.

We are not mentioned:

Offers are not lacking because he has four on the table: Manchester City, Arsenal, Chelsea and Milan , although the penalty imposed by UEFA on Wednesday to the Italians leaves them without options to sign CR7.

You need to remember that a lot of people on here are either very young and/or know very little about football. They honestly believe that a 22 yr old player is better than Ronaldo or Messi, just because of age and that once over the age of 24, the player is preparing to retire.
These are the same people who believed that L.Shaw was the best LB in the World and are also the same people who believe that Martial will win the Ball on dor (a player who cannot get into the club's first team and has been omitted from France's squad).

Given the above, it is believable that some people on this forum, do not want the best player in the World, in their team.

Remember a similar discussion about Matic... similar level players at similar age coming from the same team. How it turned out... bale and ronaldo are better players but way more expensive and seemingly ungettable, why is this even a discussion?

Its never been about realism with Ronaldo returning, but for some of the younger fans like myself its all we know, growing up watching Ronaldo at Old Trafford, and then watching him progress away from our beloved club.

yes its unrealistic and yes its probably never going to happen but I bet not a single united fan would dare say that they haven't dreamed of Ronaldo donning the Red shirt once more, gracing Old Trafford, running at goal while the Stretford end sings "viva Ronaldo".

its a pipe dream but Feck it, I'm holding on to this pipe until the day he comes out himself and says he's retiring, but lets face it he's 33 nearly 34 and is still going like he's 25, I wouldn't be surprised to see him play until 40.

as for the other 2 I'd happily take Bale, I wanted him to sign in 2013, I think he'd complete our attaching line up, delivering balls in for Lukaku or cutting in on his left. Willian on the other hand seems to be too inconsistent for me, I've seen him be brilliant on many occasions but I've also seen him ghost through games too, similarly to how Sanchez was last season and I really don't thin k he's worth the risk.
