You say that but the goal came from a nice cross. It's unbelievable. Fellaini isn't the problem nor the reason for our type of play.
He's not the problem or the cause (the manager and board are), but he's thriving in it.

I hope he stops getting stick from certain people. He is of a very small groups that actually gives a shit about playing for this club. He gives it his all and nine times out of ten makes an impact when he is on. Some people can be so short sighted when it comes to him, I’d be gutted if he left.

Has a great mentality, a bit of that old Utd dog in him, just a very limited player.

He's thrived under other managers too. Theres just this myth that we play shit football because of him. Some people even have a grudge as he reminds them of Moyes - whose teams probably still played better football then LVG lol.

We should just go full Bolton and start hoofing it to him from minute one. That's our best tactic, why not use it from the start?
Cause we're Man United not Bolton.

We certainly don't look it.
Yeah I agree but the ownership is a problem because if we cannot compete in the market, we are in trouble and our strategy has failed. I don't think it understood you need a solid base before putting the cherries on top.

You have to feel sorry for Fellaini, he is always a scapegoat. He's never been good enough for United but he has been better than some of the players that are supposed to be more than good enough.

We have spent the third highest on transfer fees since Sir Alex left and have the second highest wage bill in world football. The ownership is not the problem.

Top header. TBH, I like him as the middle of the three. He breaks up play well and I like the way hes been used in previous games where he gets the ball and the CBs (lindelof and Smalling) split. Obviously we would want upgrades on all of that, but for what we have now, it works best as it allows the full backs to push forward and gives Fellaini more options on the ball.

That's a little distorted because of how much we spent on Pogba and Lukaku. The wage bill is just being weak and giving good players at best too much money. The problem is that that the club are now going all out for that one star. Di Maria (that summer we got Falcao but that was a risk and it failed), Pogba, Griezmann, Bale, Sanchez (who many of us would have went for to be fair). Under Sir Alex, we went an age buying a midfielder. The club have to accept that Jose did well last season. We need 4/5 quality players and that means we need to scout better and adjust our priorities by recognizing we need to rebuild. They bought into success and they have shown no idea what is needed. When we start talking value, it's time to sell because it's saying you cannot compete. The club rebuilt itself on the idea of youth and on GOOD scouting. We've also undersold which is crazy. The club is a mess.

Back to fellaini, if only other players bothered to stick their head in once and awhile.

Fella has always been a great plan B for Belgium too and it shows how much he scored for us. Noone complains about hoofball in Belgium when it is required even when we are a very technical team, heck i bet United would be happy if it could play the sort of game Belgium does and yet even we need Fella. I regard Fellaini as one of our more important players even if he won't play that many matches, he was great when we required his service again in the WC as usual.

Over the year Fellaini is likely going to win you a good amount of points where otherwise you would have lost them and that just when employed as a plan B.At the end of the day it's all about the points and this is another +1 by Fella.

We don't like it either if the opposition puts up a bus or blocks all channels given how we play, when we bring on Fella it often neutralises that issue as the opposition is faced with a more direct threat.

The 2nd goal came from the same area most of our goals came from this season. Around the edge of our box. Its important to note that Matic and Ander werent particularly good defending that area in the match either, so this isnt just a Fellaini comment. But Fellaini just happened to be one of the DMs playing when the goal occurs.

Fellaini and Matic were both sucked over to the opponent's left hand side, Fellaini never gets back in to help defend the move and Matic tucks over into Fellaini's area and actually manages to affect play and get a block in. Unfortunately for Matic it comes back to the opponents and now theres a massive hole where he left his position, just outside the box allowing time and space for the attacker. A decent shot comes in, its saved and Derby get the rebound.

Fred is also jogging back in our right midfield position way off to the side, so thats all 3 of our CMs/DMs at that time 10 yards or more to our opponent's left of the penalty spot.

If Fellaini or Fred is back in his position doing what Matic decided he had to come over and do on that side of the pitch, then Matic is in position to defend the shot from the edge of the box.

Our DM setup isnt well setup nor working. Whether its Ander and Matic like at the start, or Fellaini and Matic like at the end.

He is having good season. Though he misplaced few passes when he came on but later he did well. Nice goal too, for a team that can't pass the ball quickly, he is very much needed in the attack.

Having a very good season so far, making the most of the manager's tactics, and his mentality and will to win is second to none. Shame some of the so-called more talented players can't find the gears like he can.

It's our dogshitt setup and style that makes him look good, which in itself is an issue.

Can anyone honestly with a straight face tell me he would have a spot even on the bench in other top teams?

Oh come one man, give the guy some credit. Fellaini has been a very solid performer through out his time here, he is much more useful than some other squad players we have.

Don't have an issue with giving him a credit he deserves, fair play to him, he deserves praise.

But again imagine him in a high pressing, ball on the ground team with quick play and bunch of small incisive passes? You can't because he thrives due to our dogshitt style.

We are shit and Fellaini is having a "good season", is anyone surprised?

Not his fault. However, his constant presence in the team suggests that the manager has run out of ideas. We spent the last 30 minutes in the Wolves game hoofing it to him and did the same last night (though to some good). When route one happens, you know the manager doesn't have an attacking plan and is just keeping his fingers crossed.

Credit to Fellaini, I was very vocal at my displeasure of him signing a new deal in the summer but will admit he is playing well. However... I still think he shouldn’t be the level of CM we aspire too and him shining in our team is more of an example of how low our standards have become. I don’t think he’d be starting for any other top team in Europe.

Lets not going ignore the fact that he was trash for 3-4 years here before coming good. His fortunate to have been afforded so much time. I don’t understand people acting like his been this dependable servant his whole career with us.

I think he is a talented footballer, and he would find his uses in most teams. Especially he has demonstrated he can be very disciplined and follow instructions. You are right not as a starter for teams like City but, he is here he is contributing and I appreciate his contribution. If every player of ours, demonstrated that same commitment, we would be a better footballing side.

To be honest we should go route 1 from the beginning. Seeing as its the only time we look like we have a plan under Mourinho. Just play Fellaini and Lukaku from the beginning every game and put lots of long balls in the box.

Well that's what I've been saying since the LVG days, this tumescent style of our manager has enabled him to look good.

Talented footballer? Props to him for making it in EPL and football world but what are his footballing talents other than sublime chest control and being tall enough to be a danger in the air?

God knows he can't make a pass long nor short, can't run with the ball, can't dribble, can't shoot and when he has the ball it appears as if both of his legs are in a state of perpetual argue with one another.

I said the same yesterday. If that's our best plan, then use it from the first minute itself. :)

I think the thing is we lack quality in general. Here's one problem we have. Lukaku isn't a target man but if he's not scoring who get's the goals? We lack great options on the bench. The problem isn't Fellaini or that we run out of options. We had Sanchez on the bench. It's that even Jose knows Sanchez isn't performing...cause right now he can't buy a shot on goal never mind a goal.

I don't know how many united people would trade their team for the Belgian NT, but i think we play a pretty quality technical game and even then we find plenty of use for Fellaini. I just don't get why United people seem to be of the idea that needing Fellaini from tme to time is a sign of simply lacking the quality to play "the right type of play", because i believe Belgium has practicly perfected it's technical style but that doesn't make Fella redundant to us.

When did we use Fella in this WC? Not when it was about walking over easy competition as we so often are going to do, then we just use a very pressing 352 and in most cases it will do. We used Fella when we needed to return from being behind or when it was about neutralising Neymar in the Brazil game. He was given a job by Martinez and performed to the trust put in him.

It's really about small tactical matters. When we have issue's to create chances with our press Fella is great to have because as he presents an added danger that suddently becomes too much in such a situation with our setup. You can often see the anarchy among the opposing defenders when they are faced with that situation as they don't know how to shift to handle this danger while also still putting enough attention on all the other dangers. In practicle terms it draws more defenders to the box or ties up the "free defender", Fella can easily get into the box because we usually can control the ball well and once he's in there the midfielders are often given more than enough space and time to bomb the 16.

People here imho are giving to much credit to a technical and possesion oriented style in comparison to "hoofball". I mean "hoofball" is supposed to be a deragotary term right? Why is that? Why is it that you wouldn't be able to appreciate the specialties that could contribute to "hoofball of exceptional quality"? Why is it that hoofball could not be pretty and fun if done right?

Jesus mate, Fellaini is a better footballer than you give him credit for. He is a solid short passer, solid on the ball, reliable enough defensively, he will run his guts for the team. He has scored important goals for us, and is as you said an asset during set pieces, in attack and defense. He is more talented football player than lots of player playing their trade in the PL, and what is important here, he is a good servant to this club. Everything else is unnecessary bullshit addressed to one of our own players.

I admit I haven't been watching Belgium NT playing that much, but from what I've seen they're also putting an emphasis on counter attacking, relaying on KBG to make an decisive pass, Dembele to carry the ball through or Hazard to make it happen. Also don't think, could be wrong, Fellaini isn't starter for you guys.

Here's the thing imo playing Fellaini makes you give up on plays certain way because with him and his limited passing abilities and technique you can't really rely on making anything from the middle because when teams press you, you have a problem of having a man less in the MF. He can't really carry the ball forward and he can't make a pass forward either unless there's no player around him in a 15 metar radius.

When you're chasing a goal in last 10 minutes or so and resorting to hoofball his presence can be a positive, but other than that con's outweigh the pro's of having him in the side.

I'm not saying he's shiit, I think I cleared that. Props to him for making it to the EPL and the world of professional football, he's got his talents, obviously because he is after all a pro footballer.

Our style suits him and only him I'm afraid.
