We don't have one, do we?

Apart from sports pods, I regularly listen to the NYT daily, probably one of the best podcasts out there.

Today's episode was about the hardships of instant delivery warehouse workers. This shocked me as the working conditions are far worse than third world sweatshops and it happens in the US. A harrowing listen if you have the stomach for it.

https://www.nytimes.com/2018/11/26/podcasts/the-daily/warehouse-workers-instant-delivery.html

Mods, please move this to the current events if need be as the discussion might eventually tend in that direction.

I just had a tiny lecture about podcasts at work today, and figured out I've listened to 57 days worth of podcasts since april 2016!

There are so, so many great podcasts out there though!

Some of my favorites recently:
Hardcore History
Dr. Death
Freakonomics
Stuff you should know
Gladiator

Dr death was great, so troubling though!

Have you checked out Happy face? It's about the daughter of the "Happy face" serial killer investigating her father's crimes. It's quite similar.

Sounds interesting! Will check it out.

I liked Dirty John as well, but Dr. Death was way more intense. Still worth a shot if you enjoyed Dr. Death.

I pretty much only regularly listen to Last Podcast on the Left, with random stories mixed in - I just finished West Cork not too long ago. I also liked Dirty John so Dr Death and Happy Face seem right up my alley.

Just recently got into podcasts.. already torn through..

Serial 1-3
Homecoming
S-Town
Dirty John

and the less well known ones..

Habitat - People simulate living on Mars for a year, but actually in a dome in Hawaii - focus on human interactions.
"Where should we begin" - real life couples counseling - really interesting, very sad in parts too.
Butterfly Effect - Guy meets the creator of Pornhub, and then goes and visits porn directors and actors/actresses and what effect it's had on their lives.. including when a teenage kid found her mum on there.

S-town is Great! Butterfly effect looks really interesting, will give it a try.

I listen to shit-loads of podcasts. In addition to those already mentioned, I would recommend.

The Adam Buxton Podcast: One half of Adam & Joe, friend of Louis Theroux and very funny man. Witty, rambling interviews with comedians, movie people and musicians.
Ear Hustle: Produced inside San Quentin jail (co-hosted by a prisoner) and packed full of fascinating (sometimes funny, sometimes grim) anecdotes about life inside.
Heavyweight: The presenter helps people right past wrongs. First episode is an old friend of Moby's who is pissed off that Moby borrowed one of his CDs to use as samples for all his biggest hits, then never gave them back. They duly chase Moby down to his home in the Hollwood Hills and confront him...
Caliphate: Brilliant NYT piece of investigative journalism into what life was really like as a member of ISIS. I binged the hell out of it.
The Blindboy Podcast: Absolutely massive in Ireland and gaining traction around the world. A bloke with a plastic bag on his head waxing lyrical about life, the universe and everything. Sounds a bit odd/parochial but you don't need to be Irish to appreciate it (isn't that right, @JPRouve ?)
Homecoming: A radio play starring Catherine Keener, Oscar Isaac and David Schwimmer about a pharmaceutical trial that goes awry. Atmospheric and gripping.

Yup, The Blindboy is definitely interesting, even when he is talking about irish issues he explains the context and it generally resonates to things that happens in other places.

For something a little lighter:

Dreamgun Film Reads: Irish based group who do live script reads of major box office films (Harry Potter, Spiderman, the Matrix etc.) and take the piss out of them. Gained a good but of notice in Edinburgh and Kilkenny this year and had people like Aisling Bea, David O'Doherty and James Acaster join them for Back to the Future (though it was one of the weaker shows they did)
The Flop House: 3 guys who watch films that were a critical or commercial flop, walk through the plot and complete a part critical / part humorous assessment of it. Light hearted and generally entertaining whether you've seen the film or not.
The Horne Section Podcast: Alex Horne from taskmaster with a backing band and a weekly guest, whats not to like.

I tried listening to Homecoming but for whatever reason I can't get in to the voice acted podcasts. It's almost universally accepted as really good though so I'll give it another go.

I started Happy Face yesterday and am almost finished with episode 6 already, it's extremely interesting.

Weird question but did you find issue with the sound effects on Happy face? I listened on headphones and the atmospheric music was really hard on the ear. Other than that, it was really intriguing.

I've been listening on a Bluetooth speaker / my car stereo and haven't noticed any issues at all.

I usually only listen to Distraction Pieces by Scroobius Pip and The True Geordie Podcast. Prefer podcasts which have guests on them.

The magic sponge podcast was also hilarious for football fans - Rob Beckett, Ian Smith and Jimmy Bullard have guests on each week but it was mainly lower league players who had cracking stories about how they were able to just piss about in the changing rooms/training during the 90s. Loved it but they haven't made one since last year.

Wrestle Me is a great listen even if you're not a wrestling fan. Some great stories about the stars of yesteryear especially. I recommend it

Listening to The Last Days of August by Jon Ronson. Nice intersection of 'The Butterfly Effect' and 'So You've Been Publicly Shamed' in that he investigates a pornstar who committed suicide shortly after a twitter pile on.

If you want a Podcast that talks about the golden era's of wrestling (90's and early 00's) and have a good sense of humour, then you should listen to The Lapsed Fan. The podcasts are long, but absolutely fantastic.

One of my favourite podcasts right now

I'm also catching up on a lot of How Did This Get Made... Forgot how funny it can be.

If you like this you should check out Dax Shepard's podcast, for sure.

George Ezra has a good one with famous musicians, if you're into that sort of thing.

off Camera with Sam Jones - those black and white candid interview snippets with actors that you've probably seen on Youtube. The full clips are behind a paywall on his website but the podcast versions are free.

BBC's In Our Time covers all kinds of historical topics and is brilliant.

Bill Burr is obviously a classic one, most should know about it already.

The rest I listen to are all sports related.

I need that new Jon Ronson but can't see myself signing up to Audible just for that. I recently finished The Butterfly Effect so am ready to go.

Ear Hustle is great but it sucks having to wait for updates.

Was a constant listener to Adam Buxton's podcast then I just gradually stopped listening to him for no real reason.May go back.
I listened to a few Marc Maron podcasts but he became quite irritable after a while.Always felt like he was shouting even when he wasn't. Quite a ego on the man too.
Was in-and-out of Neil DeGrasse Tyson's StarTalk.
Nowadays I just listen to film commentary tracks.
Any John Carpenter and Kurt Russel one is good for a laugh.

Listened to The Magic Sponge in the car with my mate. A football based podcast (but more on funny things behind the scenes from what I heard) with Jimmy Bullard and Rob Becket. The episode with Graham Stack is hilarious.

United Hour is a really good bad insightful listen, even if most of the supporting cast won't invest in even the most rudimentary of USB condenser microphones.

Listening to Gossipmonger with Joe Wilkinson this morning and struggling not to crack up on the train when they do the weird song. Basically people send in random gossip from their lives/local area.

Has anyone listened to The Offensive? I've only listened to 5 episodes but I think I'm in love. Mockumentary based on the mishaps of made up PL club Ashwood City. Think of In the Thick of It if it was in podcast form and about football. Every football fan should listen, it's unbelievably funny.
