The reason why I asked "Do you think he maybe made that comment about Pogba about the WC out of jealousy that he never made it very good as a player himself" is I think Jose has narcissism.
I was discussing with a poster a few days ago.

I also read lots of manager become manager's due to them not being able to cut it as footballer. I read Jose didn't make it as a footballer partly through not being strong enough, that is the reason in my opinion why he has so many big strong players in his team.

Jealousy is a trait of narcissism and narcissists ego's can not take it when people can do things they can't, in this case Pogba being a good enough footballer and to win WC and Jose not. This would make a narcissist very bitter, so this may have been the reason why Jose made the comment mate.
While it’s possible that’s exactly why Mourinho said what he said, it’s still all speculation and a bit of a stretch for me personally. I am more inclined to believe the problems started before with ideological differences somewhere and the wc success just questioned Jose’s inability to move away from his outdated rigid ways further.

Regarding the big strong players point, bit of a stretch tbh.

Regarding the managers becoming managers due to not being good enough, Fergie says as much in his autobiography. The reasoning is that great players seldom make great managers because they cannot comprehend why other players cant see or work the way they do/did. Its unfortunate that the policy now tends to be providing ex high profile players with jobs when there probably are better lesser known managers more suitable. The negative side of that though is that non profile managers may lose some form of respect from the players they are coaching because they have never understood what it was like to be a professional footballer.

How many of these apply to Jose?

Narcissistic Personality Disorder:

Signs and symptoms of narcissistic personality disorder and the severity of symptoms vary. People with the disorder can:
  • Have an exaggerated sense of self-importance
  • Have a sense of entitlement and require constant, excessive admiration
  • Expect to be recognized as superior even without achievements that warrant it
  • Exaggerate achievements and talents
  • Be preoccupied with fantasies about success, power, brilliance, beauty or the perfect mate
  • Believe they are superior and can only associate with equally special people
  • Monopolize conversations and belittle or look down on people they perceive as inferior
  • Expect special favors and unquestioning compliance with their expectations
  • Take advantage of others to get what they want
  • Have an inability or unwillingness to recognize the needs and feelings of others
  • Be envious of others and believe others envy them
  • Behave in an arrogant or haughty manner, coming across as conceited, boastful and pretentious
  • Insist on having the best of everything — for instance, the best car or office
At the same time, people with narcissistic personality disorder have trouble handling anything they perceive as criticism, and they can:
  • Become impatient or angry when they don't receive special treatment
  • Have significant interpersonal problems and easily feel slighted
  • React with rage or contempt and try to belittle the other person to make themselves appear superior
  • Have difficulty regulating emotions and behavior
  • Experience major problems dealing with stress and adapting to change
  • Feel depressed and moody because they fall short of perfection
  • Have secret feelings of insecurity, shame, vulnerability and humiliation

And one of the signs of a narcissist is that even when gone or not around he/she is the topic of conversation. Look at this thread, close to 100 pages :houllier:

Comment was bad but my God it so blown out of proportion. Not to mention he did give him an armband later and said there's no problem between them. Its obvious they couldn't work together but so much is made about those comments although problems started when he was subbed the first time long before.
It's not blown out of proportion. They're a good example, among many others, of that type of petty little man Mourinho can be. He gave him the armband alright but that didn't last long did it  ?

I don't think he took it of him just for fun.
Pogba wasn't having making things up it seems and it all went disastrous after that, training dispute, virus comments and other stuff. I can't believe even him giving an armband to Pogba is used as a stick to beat him with although it was a sign of good will. Even evil and deranged persons like him sometimes do it.

In Jose petty little mind as I don't believe he particularly gives a feck. I think he may have given him the arm band albeit for a short period to show the public how much of a good guy he is (which is a trait of narcissism). Although with Jose being Jose he could have intentionally given it to him knowing he was going to take it back soon as some type of mind game, whilst also serving the purpose of the point of point just mentioned as well.

People like Jose need recognition off the world that they are as good as they are in their mind, where as if they are that good they should know anyway and not care a feck if the world thinks they are that good.

Good post and I can totally see where you are coming from and it's a catch 22 situation.

Although Sir Alex didn't have a bad record of scoring as a player at the time 177 in 317.

It is sad that a manager who is not very well known could go on to become great but like you said doesn't get the respect for not being ex pro's.

I guess one way to counter this for a decent manager who wasn't a good pro player is to take the long root, start off in the lower leagues, do a good job there work your way up and then the better job opportunities and respect of the higher level players will come by themselves.

This is just arrant nonsense.

Mourinho was a total failure as a professional footballer. Thus 99.99999% of players he has ever coached were far better players than he ever was. He also coached Lucio and Materrazi who had also won the WC. By your logic, he would have been jealous of all of them and died of bitterness over a decade ago.

Mourinho is an arrogant prick cos he has been a very successful manager and couldnt have been that successful if he was jealous of his own players.

My advice is that you leave the psych stuff alone and stick to the simpler character bashing techniques you are better equipped to dole out

The armband was taken away from Pogba after he publicly undermined the manager. Say what you want behind closed doors about the tactics but its different when you go public. This is after Jose tried to mend things with Pogba.

We were over reliant on Pogba and after the summer we had in the transfer market Jose became increasingly confrontational. Pogba has power in that dressing room and that's what killed Jose's time here. If we had players to take the load off Pogba, Paul would have less power but in the end that didn't happen. Who do you think the players are really going to side with? Pogba or Jose? You cannot assert your authority on a player the team is heavily reliant on while his agent is also stirring in public. If you look at the facts Jose tried every tactic with Pogba from defending him from Scholes, criticising him and giving him the armband.

Pogba vs Mourinho was exaggerated last season. After this summer it was very real. The relationship was totally destroyed after Southampton where Pogba was just plain bad.

The transfer window triggered Jose. I think from that point he knew where this was going to head especially with Pogba winning the world cup. The blame on Jose being so confrontational is on him, but we knew what we was getting into when we hired him. As soon as the board did not back him after giving him the contract it was over.

This isn't me blaming Pogba either. There should be other players to carry the load of transitions and carrying the ball from deeper areas. When Pogba is the only player that can actually do it, but is inconsistent with his application at times, it is inevitably going to be a disaster. Jose knows Pogba is the most talented player in that team, but as manager he cannot have one player be so influential in each facet of the team. Pogba is so talented, so popular, he is actually the one player Jose could not afford to collide with.

seriously? He likely gave pogba the arm band hoping the responsibility would change his mentality but unfortunately it didnt.

You are really moving close to the edge with the kind of 'far out there' narratives you are stretching to come up with

Totally agree with this bit and I shall continue character bashing him as long I feel neccessary.

I won't bother talking about narcissism any more as I could write an essay about it mate.

I am not disputing that he is one of the most successful managers ever trophy wise and that achievement deserves respect. I just don't particularly like him as a person mate :)

I also think that Ole coming in was decided before the Liverpool game. My friend works at Heathrow and met Ole a week or two before the Anfield game. My guess is Ole was there to meet Woodward at the London offices. Why else would he be in London? 2 weeks later he is named manager.

You could write anything you like but it doesn't mean others should demean themselves to read it.

You obviously dont know much about Mourinho's personality and are obviously clueless about narcissism beyond its dictionary definition. Your attempts to show otherwise are amusing at best and outright insulting to the real professionals.

Your post has valid points mate.
The blame on Jose being so confrontational is on him, but we knew what we was getting into when we hired him. As soon as the board did not back him after giving him the contract it was over.
I totally agree on point above.
Jose had his positives as well as negatives, although when we signed him I don't think we thought it was going to turn out this bad. I think they were willing to put up with the circus that follows him as they expected him to get us at least one Premiership title.
I think it was stupid giving him that contract after he had been flirting with PSG, which something that annoyed me. Not just by him personally, I'd be p!$$ed off by any manager of any club being so disrespectful to the team who pays their wages.
Regarding the point of them not backing him, I think they should have backed him with every penny he wanted or sacked him, by not giving him all, the money he wanted they showed they had little faith in him and by doing so some of the negativity that Jose caused this season should be held accountable for by Woody.

Pogba is so talented, so popular, he is actually the one player Jose could not afford to collide with.
In an era of unprecedented player power you cant fall out with the star of the team, although the manager should be the one in charge.

Who do you think the players are really going to side with? Pogba or Jose?
With regards to the above bit I think the player's will side with a player over a manager like Jose most of the the the time as they don't like publicly been thrown under the bus. Players are human they make mistakes but have the sense to have a word with them behind closed doors.

Screw the dictionary definition. I have lived narcissts, some of by best friends have narcissm, some of my family have and it can be a right pain in the ar$e but you have it to persevere with it because you care for these people mate.

I really do think Jose was likely going after that Newcastle game. Its a pity that it didn't happen then.

I ahree he had his reasons to take it off but it was ridiculous all things considered. Just because Pogba said we should "attack" during an ITW ? I mean, seriously ?

Just as Jose comments after WC, bad as it were, didn't warrant Pogba being so mad about it. With those comments about attacking Pogba showed he couldn't care less of getting an armband as a sign of patching things up.
The whole thing was ridiculous.
I'm glad for Pogba and hopefully now Jose is gone he'll perform like he's capable of. My only fear is he still has Raiola as his agent..

You think its a coincidence that he was in London just a week or two before being announced as manager? Come on. The club knew who they were going to pick before Jose left.

You are right. Just wish the cnuts at the club did it right after Sevilla and the football heritage nonsense. Could have brought the fans to their side a long time ago.

I never assume things like that even if they're very tempting. I mean what if we had to defeated LFC ? Was Ole gonna be made official regardless ?
Raiola did it if I remember rightly.
Raiola is a pretty independent agent who says many things. One of the most powerful agents in the world and a long time Pogba friend. Maybe you're right and he was just voicing Pogba but still it wouldn't be a surprise if he did that on his own.

People here complain everyday Guardiola outspending everyone else in the league to buy success, judging on similar standard, you can’t really defend Mourinho outspending Moyes and LVG to buy more success here.

LVG did win the FA cup too. Your “best by far” verdict on Mourinho is quite abit exaggerated.

In Mourinho 2.5 years here, out of 3 attempts, he failed to finished top 4 twice (assume this year finishing top 4 is highly unlikely before his sack). this is just, similar to Moyes and LVG.

Success

Moyes
Years in charge: 1 yr
~30m spent
League: 7th
Won: Charity Shield

LVG
Years in charge: 2 yrs
~200m spent
League: 4th, 5th
Won: FA Cup

Mourinho
Years in charge: 2.5 yrs
~400m spent
League: 6th, 2nd, (6th)
Won: UEFA Cup, League Cup, Charity Shield
Jose had clearly more tangible success than Moyes and LVG - but like I said, the bar was very low. Had he won that FA cup last season the difference would have been a lot clearer

United needed to spend more inder Jose in part because of the errors in the market by the club under Moyes and Van Gaal - plus rivals like City were spending way more than United so we had to try and keep up (arguably Jose should have been given more money)

It's been show all round and the negativity of the last 6 months is, imo, making people forget how fecking bad it was under Van Gaal and the task Jose had.

Jose's personal issues have burnt bridges with thw squad and club and it's his own fault he got sacked but i think he has left United with a better team and prospect than what he took over.

IIRC, Raiola only responded to Scholes. The french press tried to get answers from Pogba but he dodged the questions by saying that he wasn't given the same instructions. As far as I can remember neither Raiola nor Pogba were "mad".

Jose was not going to last the season. After the Southampton game they must have put things in motion.
