Genuine case for him to actually be second in our pecking order of CBs behind only Lindelof.
Good call (although he would be 3rd on the list behind Smalling). We've 2 players, possibly 3 that we can't rely upon because of injuries.

He did very well today and shows his versatility. Seems better at CB than RB

Yes, he had a good game today at home to a Championship side, but please can we not do that thing where one of our players has one good game at CB and then suddenly should be part of our first choice partnership?

Have we learned nothing from Phil Jones?

After Spurs, we've got Brighton and Burnley at home. Would love to see Darmian get a chance in the first team.

I'm not saying he is a long term solution, but could potentially steady the ship until the ebd of the season.

Unfortunately our CB situation is a basket case at the moment. Bailley seems to have joined our 2 x Sicknotes of Rojo and Jones, there is still a question mark on Lindelof (although he is improving vastly), while Smalling is out on a longer term injury. I'll also throw into the mix that we have a match day squad talent in Tunzebe out on loan.

After Spurs we should have 3 senior Centre Backs to choose from, but with the various concerns over Bailley and Jones, Darmian could be in contention to form a partnership with Lindelof until Smalling gets back. Certainly not a long term option for me though

I do agree that our CB situation is a mess, it's a real case of quantity over quality. A world-class or nearly world-class CB in their prime years is absolutely essential.

I'm so disappointed in Bailly. He's always had the potential to have a shocker out of nowhere, but in his first season it seemed that 80% of games were excellent, and 20% terrible (hardly anything in between). Now the ratio seems to have flipped the other way - still believe he has plenty of natural quality, but his lack of brains and injury record may dash his hopes of becoming a top class defender.

Is it me or he looked more reassuring than Phil Jones :nervous:

Lads, stop being weird...
I know it's weird, but it also could make sense in our weird centre back situation

How I miss the days of Stam, Ferdinand, Bruce, Johnson, Vidic, Pallister......

Darmian when he plays for Italy has always played well. He can shoot from long range too and if his long range shot against Sweden had gone in instead of the smacking against the post Italy would have gone to the WC.

Not a surprise that a defensive wingback like Darmian can fill in at centre back. That's a necessity for wide defenders in Seria A, they have to be able to fill in at centre back to meet the needs of italian tactics.

Tbh he was a body stuck into a team of second string and returning injured players. Playing a side who will be relegated from the championship. Played ok. I think grant would have looked ok in centre defence today. Good squad rotation and would be worth it if we get another easy game in FA cup or an injury crisis but anyone suggesting he’s some sort of go to option at cb is having a laugh

He did a decent job today.

He didn't need to do much because it's been a good while since i've seen a team as incompetent in attacking as Reading. Still, I think he's doing his job pretty faithfully. Despite the fact he's probably counting down the days until his contract runs out and he can return to Italy and play regular football again.

I thought he defended well when he was in the correct position. The issue was that he kept going walkabout.

Reading's best chance came when Darmian decided to go from RCB to the left side of midfield after being attracted to the ball. Obviously a bit of a rush of blood to the head.

If he can iron out those positional flaws, he might have a future at the club. It would be great to have a defender that can cover all positions in the back four. A new John O'Shea.

He will be back in Italy for free in the summer, said so a few months ago that he misses it. He is a good utility squad player and makes no problems, but it didnt work out for him here.

If he can learn how to play CB, he could become a decent squad option.

We've got too many specialists on the bench. It'd be great to have a single option for defence rather than 2 or 3 as we do now.

Played alright yesterday under relatively easy circumstances.

Still wouldn't for a second think that he is United material.

Have nothing against the guy, he seems like a good, consistent professional and we should get a decent fee for him from one of the Italian sides.

He plays RB for Italy and seems to be in the starting 11 most of the time. I am sure that once he gets back to a top club in Italy he will play for the national team regularly and would be a great player for them.
Furthermore, any player needs to play regularly to get into a good form. If you do not play then it is tough to come in and play well.

Name me one good italian RB? No, there is any, 'cause they are so bad right now and thats the only reason i can see him joining the national squad. I dont know how this lad dropped so low but there is no hope for him here.

Lets be honest here lack of playing time isn't why he's played for the most part very poorly during his time at United. He's had good runs in the team especially under Van Gaal but just never got going.

He's the wrong player, at the wrong club in the wrong league at the wrong time. Maybe he'll be a decent player again once he goes back to Italy.

Making a point of how unhappy he was by being intentionally bad at his job. We only let him sign 2 x new CBs.... The man was a joke.

I think he's a sleeper. A good player who just needs a good run to shine.
He's a decent player, not as horrible as the caf makes him out to be. A defender first and foremost and most of the slack he's gotten is because of how ineffective he's been going forward which for my money has been somewhat unwarranted considering how many players at the club that are paid to only do that have been poor at it for years. He's basically John O'Shea, a defender that covers many positions which is nice to have in a pinch.

He is homesick so there's little to do about that. No reason to stick with being a backup in a place you're not comfortable in when you can be earning a living at home. The reason he's still here is that the club didn't feel that the offers for him were good enough.

It was a shockingly shit Reading attack that he was up against. Let’s not get carried away.

I have seen him play for Italy against much better opposition and he comes through. I think under Ole is he gets a chance he will play well. He does join the attack when he plays for Italy and if his long range shot had gone in instead of hitting the upright Italy would have gone to the World Cup.
He is an underrated player.

He's our best defensive fullback. He's also possibly our worst offensively, at least before Valencia fell off a cliff.

Mmmm questionable... Valencia has easily been terrible for a long time before that. Darmian wasn’t scared to attack the final 3rd and when he got an opportunity he was a far better crosser of a ball. He was even better than Valencia was at crossing using his weaker foot when he played on the left.

I’ve always felt his attacking has been really underrated but I’m not saying this like it’s something to be applauded either, there is room for lots of improvement there but I feel like he is better than some would have us believe.

That there is exactly why he's not a Manchester United player. He's at his peak and is at best average at his job.
