I'm one of the biggest Mata supporters on here but it's probably time for him to go. Hard to see how he and Pogba can play together unless we play a back 3 or midfield 2, he's just not got enough physically to play on the right in England.

Why would an aging Barcelona team have any interest in a dog slow aging midfielder?

I'll always believe he'd have been great for us as a traditional #10.

Such a shame that so much of his career has been effectively wasted, playing out of position for a string of managers who failed to build any kind of stability into the team, alongside a succession of players who's desired roles left him shunted out of place.

Ah well, certainly not a bad life either way! Thoroughly likeable guy, shame to say it but his time here has long been over I think.

I hope he goes to Italy and tears it up.

Amen. Amazing that we bought him from Chelsea where he'd dominated in that position and then proceeded to play him out wide.

Our squad management has been quite poor since Woody took over, I don't expect it to suddenly change over this summer.
Should have been sold before contract ran down, now two of the players we signed for 70 m combined risking to go on a free.

Boy we are Run like arsenal under Woodward.

If he were on the pitch vs Barcelona we would've won at least 2-1 from freekicks :D

His game time should go to Pereira - we shouldn't be renewing his deal. What is wrong with this club?
Got to agree with this sentiment.

The financial decisions made for what feels like forever have been mind bogglingly stupid.

The club MUST stop compounding the foolishness and rebuild accordingly. Stop renewing and rewarding mediocrity under the guise of squad continuity.

However, out of all the names that are thrown around as being shockers I would be happy to keep:
  • Jones, Smalling, Lindelof, Matic, Lingard (he's had a bad season, 2 in row would be goodbye)
  • If Herrera was to choose to stay I would be happy.
  • I can see Mata being useful but can't argue with freeing up his wage
See you laters are:
  • Rojo, Bailly, Valencia, Young, Darmian, Sanchez, Lukaku
Wouldn't upset me going with the right replacements:
  • De Gea, Martial

With those freed up it would be absolutely about time we reduced the wage bill, keeping the squad players' contracts down. It worries me to think what all our backup players are on.

Our sporting ROI compared to the wages spent is a damn joke.

If he signs a new contract, he knows he will be singing as a squad player and not a first team starter. If he´s happy with that, then why not. After the summer, United could be left short of midfielders.

Interesting. "Stop renewing and rewarding mediocrity" and then happy to keep Jones who is a definition of mediocrity and stealing a living

Still a pretty tidy player that could solve some of our creativity problems. This is on the basis that we actually play him in his best position in the centre. If not, no point in having him.

If Mata played elsewhere and was available on a free, we'd probably all be saying he was worth having in the squad.

Hahah. Can't argue with being called out on that on the surface of it! I will fight my corner though.

There's only so deep the surgeon can cut into our squad at any one time.

Question is, which player can we buy that will serve Jones' bit part squad role...that won't cost upwards of 30 million and that is home grown? The budget will only stretch so far, and we've got a hell of a lot of purchases to make. Jones for me is at the lower end of my concern for the next window.

Smalling & Lindelof will probably share the second CB spot, with a new 1st teamer coming in. That leaves one more CB that is covering, and that's Jones.

When we should really be losing Rojo, Bailly, Young, Darmian, Sanchez, Lukaku...probably losing Herrera, Mata, might be losing De Gea...that's more than enough surgery without getting rid of someone who has stepped in just fine quite a few times. Hell people aren't happy with Matic, Lingard, previously Fred...I'm not happy with Martial!

What I'm getting at is that Jones is so far down the list of to do, even more so that he's one of the eight required home grown squad places.

He's already a squad player, so I'm not at all sure how he'd even fit in if we upgrade our squad in the summer.

Even more added to the pile of evidence that whoever is handing out contracts is clueless. We have a massive hole on the right, Mata barely plays and is at the end of his career. Him and Young should have been moved on, and the wages would go towards revamping our right hand side, but instead both have been offered contracts.

If there really is a contract offer on the table for him we should forget about winning trophies any time soon. The ambition isn't there

He can't pass the ball with any power. Can't run, can't beat his man, can't hold the ball due to lack of strength. It's so sad to see United accommodating such averageness.

I notice his bald spot has gone and his hair has become thicker. Hope the old propecia hasn't done a Rooney on him.

I think it's better if he refuses the deal as he's not contributing anymore. I like Mata, the person, the player ... He should look for another challenge.

It would push the club to sign a replacement as well.

I love Mata but he's a yard off the pace now.

We should thank him for this service and let him go on his way. I can see him going back to Spain and being a solid La Liga player for a few years.
